Through- out the year, the band fulfilled that purpose by performing at school and community events, in addition to its traditional appearances at compet- itive contests. They Played Their Last Time The Lincoln Leopards finished the 1971 season with an overall standing of five wins and four losses. The team boasted an undefeated record in non-league play and wound up 2-4 in league action. Impressive wins over Ellsworth and Clyde launched the Leopard attack. A short-lived winning streak was broken when Lincoln encountered their first league opponent, Osborne. Mankato slid by in a snowy Homecoming appearance, handing Coach F1orence's team their second loss. The next two games added to each side of the win-loss columns. The Leopards overpowered Smith Center for their first league win, then. fell to Belleville for the third loss. Still fighting, the team pushed by Minneapolis, then went on to stomp the 7th ranked, undefeated 2A team, Downs, for the sensational victory of the season. The final battle with arch rival Beloit, undefeated and heading for state playoffs, ended in a Trojan vic- tory. Although the scoreboard placed Beloit on top, statistics favored the hard-hitting Leopards. Selected for the all-league team were jim Kubick, Mark Zier, and Tim King, with Ralph Lagergren and Ron Sperry receiving honorable mention. Tim King was also chosen for all area, and all state 2A honors. 43 - Y Y W 77, LINCOLN LOCKER CO. Powering to a good start, the Leopards couldn't find a winning mark midway through the season. With dreams of State Tourna- ment, the Leopards tumbled to Mankato in the District Tour- nament, thereby receiving sec- ond place and a berth in re- gional play. The Leopard's hope of State Tournament play was shattered as Lincoln fell to Hanover 64-67 in regional play. Hanover represented our region in State Tournament action. N3 1 yy 1 LINCOLN OIL C0 INC Cross Country Turning on for its season, the Cross Country men of Lincoln High had their first meet at the Minneapolis Invitational. ,Finishing 10th place, Lincoln turned in its best time for the meet 12:01 by Mike Reno. Vernon Aufdemberge occupied lthe next two meets at Smith Center and Beloit, turning in a 12:01 for the first and an 11:13 at the second. Vernon's time in the Beloit Invitational won him a medal, the first Cross Country medal for Lincoln since 1966. During these two meets, Lincoln was handicapped by the absence of a runner in each, so could not compete as a full team. j For the final meet of the year, Lincoln journeyed to the N.K.L. meet held in Minneapolis. Once again at full force, Lincoln placed 6th in the meet with Vernon Aufdemberge turning in another 11:13 for the best time. The combat began as they trooped over Ellsworth 36- 12. Makato beat out the freshmen players 18-12, with a team consisting of 10 sophomores and 1 freshman. ln the following weeks, the team overcame the odds as they tore through their schedule, downing Osborne, 44- O, Solomon, 22-6, Belleville, 36-65 and Gypsum, 54- 14. A second defeat was dealt to the gallant gladiators when Delphos smashed through the rough layout of joe Ortiz's team. The game ended with a downfall, 12-26, but with a 5-2 record for the season, plus a clean sweep into first place in the NKL, the freshmen had nothing to complain about. MR . At Hays, sixteen German I and German II students stumbled through a test measuring knowledge of the language, both oral and written, while competing with 11,000 other students across the nation for ninety trips to Germa- ny. More tests awaited German Club members at McPherson, along with more enjoyable entertain- ment--a luncheon, skits, and the presentation of the play Hansel and Gretel, in German.
