The bus drivers make sure students in the country and from Barnard and Beverly make it to school on time. Their job is not always the easiest--bad weather, poor roads, and unruly passengers tend to make things difficult for them. lt is amazing that they remain as cheerful as they do, considering the obstacles they are up against. The cooks put in long hours preparing dinner every day. Their biggest handicap is preparing several different meals from a single government subsidy and doing it in a delicious manner. As with everyone else, they some- times succeed, and sometimes fail, but generally their successes far outnumber their failures. STUCO also had two other projects this year. As a re- sult of magazine sales from previous years, Lincoln was once again able to have a foreign ex- change student. Nils Tveit came to us from Norway. Season Summary Football fans saw some of the finest high school football played in Kansas this fall as the Lincoln Leopards completed an 8-0-1 season. It has been thirty-two years since Lincoln has had an undefeated team, and thirty years since a Leopard team has won or shared a league championship. Statistics show the Lincoln squad was ef- fective both offensively and defensively--scored 270 points and allowing opponents only 94 points. Ellsworth headed the schedule this year--and Lincoln had not beaten Ellsworth since 1956. But this year things were different--the Leopards snapped Ellsworth's 17 game winning steak by defeating them 30-12. September 26 was originally an open date for Lincoln, but a game was later scheduled with Clyde. The Clyde-contest became the tiny thorn in Lincoln's side--the Leopards tied the Bluejays 14-14. Most people, how- ever, were quick to point out that a tie is better than a loss and that Lincoln was still undefeated. The Osborne game was another close battle. A last second safety broke the 20-20 tie to give Lincoln its sec- ond win, 22- 20, and start the team on its way to a big championship. The I-e0PHl-'dS traveled to Mankato OCtObe1' 10, and ran through the mud and muck to blank the Cougars 40-0. Then, the Leopards shut out the Smith Center Redmen 50-O to demonstrate to a large Lincoln homecoming crowd a fine example of Lincoln's strength. Lincoln outlasted Belleville in a tension-filled game October 24 at Belleville. A potent Belleville team al- most turned the tide in the final minutes of play, but the Leopard defense saved the 34- 30 score.' On Halloween the Leopards met the Minneapolis Lions--and carded their third shut-out, defeating the Lions 34-O. Four days later the Leopards faced Lindsborg and allowed them only one touchdown, winning with a healthy 27 point margin, 33-6. In the annual Lincoln-Beloit grid-iron clash, Lincoln had not won since 1958. The team needed a win badly, as a three way tie for first place could have developed in the Northern Kansas League. Lincoln sneaked past the Trojans 13-12 to end a fine football season. Lincoln gained 417 112 points under the new State playoff system--2 112 points behind Sacred Heart in the 2A classification. STATE GOLD MEDALIST Ed Burns WE'RE NUMBER ONE Lincoln's 4-man golf team, making their third straight trip to state, outclassed the field in 4-man and medalist competition to capture two state championships. The 4-man team of Ed Burns, Howard Rees, Don Lewick, and Steve McReynolds breezed to the title by 24 strokes over its nearest competitor, Scott City. The 36-hole event was up for grabs after the fiist day with Lincoln leading by 4 strokes over Ulysses. The four- some carded a 313--Ed, 715 Howard, 78, Don, 815 and Steve, 83 over the long, par 74 Herington course. Many people believed that Ed and the team would fold on Saturday. Everyone's score improved, however, and as a team Lincoln fired a 294, two UNDER par, and came away with two State Championship trophies. Ed led the way with a blistering 69, five under par. Howard fired a 71, a three under par. Don had a excellent 75, and Steve carded a fine 79. Ed Burn's remarkable total of 140 won him the state championship by four strokes.
