The 1968-'69 Leopard squad recorded an 8 win and a 4 loss in the Northern Kansas League campaign to finish second. In January the Leopards won the second place Tournament Trophy. It was not until the final three weeks of the basket- ball season that the Leopards started to growl. With a disciplined offense and a tenacious man-to-man de- fense, the Lincoln Leopards won the State District Tournament. Enroute to the first place trophy, the Leopards defeated St. john's of Salina 62-43 and Minneapolis 58-42. The following week the Leopards entered Re- gional Tournament play and defeated Lindsborg 53- 52, Herrington, 52-46 to capture the first place Re- gional Tournament Trophy and advance to the State Tournament at Emporia. In the first round of State Tournament action, the Leopards lost, in a real thriller to Southwestern Heights by one point, 47-46. The Lincoln Leopards closed this fine season with 18 victories and 7 defeats, the second highest number of victories in the history of Lincoln High. But the team accomplished a goal that all basketball teams cherish--a trip and a chance to play in the State Tournament. This is the first team in the history of Lincoln High to achieve this goal. Leading the Leopards to this fine season were se- niors: jerry Nelson, Don Wiebke, Mike Ryan, and Mike Stewart, and underclassmen, Terry King, Dalen Rathbun, Gordon Oberrnueller, jim Harlow, Don Lewick and Tim King. Mike Stewart was selected to the NKL, all area team and to the State Tourney team.
