For all up-to-date high-schools have them and no annual could be a success unless it represented its high-school as such. For instance, if your school has not sufhcient energy, supply yourselves with some good sneezing tonic and administer freely whenever occasion demands. Or else devise a crow- bar out of an insignihcant pin and give your neighbor a lift sometimes when he is floundering in the depths of geometry, or when, with his face buried in his hands and with his elbows resting on his desk, he has gone off to the Elysian fields of dreams. You will find that this helps. Considering the spirit in the school, if there is plenty of bristling energy you will Hnd the spirit in close attendance. More- over, if the spirit happens to be of the right sort it will result in boundless enthus- iasm. As for the rest of the above named characteristics, our views on school life lead us to believe that they will not be found wanting, unless possibly it is the blithsome expectations of some teacher, for it occasionally happens that a teacher is so confounded with the mental inability of her pupils that her expectations dwindle away in a cloud of inconceivable gloom. However, let conditions be as they may, we have a word of cheer for our suc- cessors: Apply plenty of grit, brains, blows, patience, perseverence, originality, art, science, system, threats, and due consideration, and take in return your share of knocks, criticisms, flatteries, loss of sleep and disappointment, and you may be able to produce an annual Q72 if Pk FK lt seems that the majority of us young people would prefer a high-school where we didnlt have to work very hard, and where we could have all of the good times that we wanted. That is very natural, is it not? Say, wouldn't it seem de- lightful to go through high-school and not meet with a single difliculty, not receive a single harsh word, not be reproached by the teachers, and not receive a criticism of any kind? Wouldn't it be glorious if the dear teachers could only learn us? But since we young sprouts of humanity are not made up of such delightful and perfect materials as would permit of such ideal conditions in a high-school, and since the world at large would not know what to do with us after we were grad- uated, it is to be feared that we will have to continue to turn the same old wheel against the edifying friction and agitation of the present-day high-school curriculum. Especially will there be no hope for you Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen. Although we wish you the best of all that this great institution of learning can give, nevertheless, we are inclined to think that you will have to give ample work in exchange. You will have to take the criticism, the troubles, the diflicul- ties, the harsh words along with the delectable riches of pleasure and knowledge. And what then?-When you get through school Cas advice has led us to believel the world will receive you for just what you are. 10
