Our teachers have nourished us with the light of knowledge and instilled in us the ever-increasing hunger for it. Wle know that we must ever seek to learn. In a sense, there has been teamwork between the teachers and the students. They have given, and We have received. If we, in return, have given to them, it has been evidenced by our high degree of respect and affection for them. lYe shall always be grateful. Vllilliams, mentor and friend, has worried over us, looked out for us, loved us. VVhat has come from his heart has gone to ours. TO MY FRIENDS OF THE FOURTEENTH CLASS: In a recent learned address at the lllassachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Hubertus Strughold, who organized the United States Air Force Department of Space llledicine, presented some of the basic differences between the atmosphere in which we live and that with which a ven- ture into outer space will have to deal. Among the hard facts he stressed are these: the availability of oxygen for breathing ends about ten miles above the earthg at twelve miles, atmospheric pressure is reduced to the point at which body fluids boil and evaporate: Ccj twenty-six miles above the earth, the atmosphere no longer screens out intensive cosmic radiation. Qdj at eighty to one hundred miles the diffusion of light by atmospheric particles ceases and CHD Cb? cosmic darkness prevails: one hundred miles above the earth the zone of complete silence is reached, at one hundred and twenty miles, radiation replaces convection and conduction a means of heat transmission: CCD Cf? Team work can, I am certain, solve these and other problems not allied with space travel. But team work is not enough, at least, not enough for you and me. Gangsters have team workg Hitler had team work, Khrushchev has team work which is solving, and will continue to solve, problems of space. On the other hand, churches and synagogues, too, have team work. It seems certain, then, that team work-at least the kind of team work to which this hook is addressed-must rest on a philosophy tempered by the wonder of God. The Creator, who made the universe and all of the complexities therein, also made lllang and endowed him with divine intelligence to solve, for good or ill, for his use or destruction, the complexities of his environment, It is my sincere hope that your school has helped you to learn constructive team work and, there- by, given you, at least, a glimpse of the divine possibilities in working together as you aspire to the stars. Sincerely, - CHAS. H. WILLIAMS, Principal 12 VICE-PRINCIPALS Wle have found Miss Scheuhing to be endowed with intelligence, understanding, sympathy, friendliness, and a profound awareness of the problems of youth. Like her colleagues, she is a person who appears to have been trained all her life for her role at Lincoln. Mr. Weiss, as head of our science de- partment and later as vice-principal has contributed immeasurably to our growth. His dignity, gentleness, and farsighted- ness have been ours to appreciate and emulate. Dr. Hyman Boodish was a graduate of Central Iigh Sc-hool and the I'niversity of Pennsylvania, and vas best noted for his profound wisdom and his deep lnderstanding of people. Dr. Boodish seemed always to us to be charac- erized by a great calm, an infinite capacity to absorb .ur problems, while leading us to recognize the sim- ali:-ity of their solution. 13 CCUNSELORS If, all illly' llllIl', you l.0llllll tllzll. tho slings Zllltl :ll'l'ows of 0l1lI'2lg'l'0llS fm'- llllllvl wx-rv :lll ll'1lllli'1l :lgzllllst you, or lllill you wcrv lllllIll'I'S0tl ill il sl-:l of ll'0llllll'S,N you, lll :lll prollzllllllly, lIl'2lll04l clilwwlly for llll' olllcvs ol' llll' l'Ollll- sclors. Basically, we tried to learn about government and how it affects thc individual. Some of the national political issues of the century came to view during oglr stay at Lincoln. lVith these issues came an exploitation of certain portions of our own national government. Sadly enough, the basic human rights were disputed in a manner which clearly showed that we, the members of the future United States government, must eliminate strife within our own country if we are to promote the idea of a free and peaceful world. With an optimistic outlook on life, we proceed to higher forms of government, using in later years training that we acquired by belonging to the Lincoln High School Student Association. Aside from pre- senting these awards, the girls also sponsor an ele- mentary school track meet and the Girls' Intramural Gym Meet. Peggy Crompton, Judy Sankey, Gloria Weitzman and Ginny Johnson have spent a good deal of their time and efforts in bringing these titles home to Lincoln and, every autumn, they will surely look back on after-school practices and rugged games. The Mermaids have been another championship capturer in Lincoln's ath- letic field and Jeanne Graebeldinger and Carol Bartsch, of the January, '58, class have been two important factors in this Winning streak. Members of the team have not only shared in these conquests but they have had the opportunity of im- proving their strokes, breathing, and most of all, the teamwork that comes by working together toward the same goal- public high championship. These girls have helped to keep the public high bowling title within the hallowed walls of Lincoln. Strike,' is the word our pin maids especially have liked, and each playing season they have gone all out to bow1,' over all opposition. Looking back, We're sure to remember the black and gold keg- lers as champs. 5, iff! f r'a if N 'Qi my Lincoln's girls, gym has been the scene of many exciting volleyball games for quite a few seasons. Billie and Jean will long remember tiring hours after school practicing for a big game, rough compe- tition, and the thrill of winning a cham- pionship. With these two goals in mind, many girls have been influenced toward a greater understanding of the principles of working together. Giest Class History Part of crowd at Jamboree Band performs during half-time Victorious Basketball team at Palestra . 'I Naive youngsters wandering through corridors, wondering what it is all about, is probably a good delineation of freshmen. Awe possessed us as words of wisdom emanated from the lips of our teachers. No school, it seemed, could be of more portentious size. The maze of cor- ridors was the great enigma of the year. It was with great vigor that we prepared for our first examinations, our whole future seemed to be contingent on the grades we received for them. Time passed slowly, and holidays seemed a sanctuary in which we got relief from the de- mands impressed upon us. At the close of our freshman year the dim outlines of a class unity started to appear. Subjects, along with the intensity of study, increased in difficulty during the sophomore year. For the first time many of us indulged in extracurricular activities, discovering interesting and invigorating pastimes, At the Sophomore Hop We had the delightful experience of dancing to the harmonious notes of the Lincolnaires. We had now attained a responsible position in the school community. In our Junior year many of us took the History Trip to Washington, supposedly for the purpose of enlightening ourselves as to the func- tions of our governmental body. Our football team during this year became supreme monarchs of the Public League and our basketball team came near to accom- plishing the same feat. The highlights of our social season were the Pigskin Hop and the Basketball Bounce. Our ultimate goal, graduation, loomed just ahead. We had earned the distinguished title of seniors. All of the joys and the miseries of term reports and final examinations were ours. The senior trip to the spacious Bear Mountain Park and the Prom at the lush Sheraton Hotel, gave us many fond memories. We finally had reached the end of our tribulations and hopefully learned the value of a good education not only in terms of its earning power but as a stimulus to our minds. We were now prepared to pursue our many aims in life. Senior Trip boat ride View of Palisades during Senior Trip Yvcst Point viewed during Senior Trip ii' 5 . . as K . we gi A 'L Q f of 33410 S -N...
