The taxpayers of the city have provided beautiful and adequate buildings. They have made possible the employment of a qualified and dedi- cated staff. And, as a result, graduates too numerous to mention have emerged and taken their places throughout the world as successful and respected citizens. This class will be no exception. To the graduates of 1955 who have striven so hard to help Lincoln grow and de- velop, we heartily extend the best wishes of our staff for a happy, useful and successful life. They will enter years of greater opportunities than those experienced by our former graduates. It is our fervent hope that they make the best use of them. EARL D. THOMAS Principal - 9 - Ann Johnson, Counselor Students seek help for their many problems in the Office of the Counselor where they are given individual attention. The counseling program is based on the policy of giving each student the attention he needs as an individual. All services are de- signed to help him grow in his own best way and make the most of his high school years. Not Shown Girard T. Bryant Former Vice-Dean, On Leave Charles B. West, Vice-Principal Mr. West discusses with this student the importance of regular attendance. To create a consciousness of this factor on the part of the student is a primary goal of Lincoln High School. - 10 — 1. Chester R. Anderson Industrial Arts 2. Theodore S. Burnett English 3. Seniors Bid Farewell to Lincoln Day after day youth wends its way — pausing awhile — yet not to stay” In September, 1951 the now distinguished class of 1955 first entered the portals of Lin- coln High School as wide-eyed freshmen; how- ever, because of the friendly atmosphere and excellent counseling from the advisers, some members of this superior class soon became inspiring leaders. Because of the hard work of members of this class, the English and Civics cup was awarded to two outstanding scholastic students at the end of the freshman year. Football, basketball and track were engaged in by mighty” members of this class who were once considered to be lowly” ninth graders. T hey now took their place beside the giants of the upper classes. After completing the ever-to-be remem- bered freshman year and becoming worldly wise” sophomores, the class advanced to make more news-making history within, as well as without, the walls of the Castle on the Hill.” Several members boasted varsity uniforms in each sport participated in by students of Lin- coln High School. One of the highlights of the year was the election of the all-city high school mayor from this group. Yes, the class was on its way. Nothing could stop it now! It was destined to make history. As juniors the class surpassed all expecta- tions in acnieving fame in football, basketball and track. Members of this class were the backbone of every worthwhile organization throughout the entire school. And, as usual, the candidate for mayor from Lincoln High School was a member of the Class of 5 5”. The annual junior class play entitled Bill’s Night Out” was a howling success. Father Time continued his journey and the already stellar class of 1955 made new advances in every field. In June, this class shall make its exit with mixed emotions of joy and sorrow — joy for being able to venture into new fields and sorrow for having to leave be- hind the carefree, happy days of youth. We want our beloved faculty and admin- istration to know that we appreciate their ef- forts in bringing out the very best qualities that lie within us. We shall always love and praise Lincoln High School, not in terms of structure architecturally, not in terms of in- creasing personnel, but rather as a monument to the personal helpfulness it has given each of us and which we are sure it will continue to do in the future. We leave with the Class of 56” the re- sponsibility of upholding the ideals and prin- ciples of Lincoln High School. We charge them to do their part well. Students who plan to go to college take courses which prepare them for college entrance. Others take courses designed to prepare them for gainful employment after high school. A C T I V I T I E S 77 HOMEMAKING J Recognizing that every girl is a potential homemaker, and that all boys will, as vj adults, be concerned with home life, the Homemaking department practices the philoso- iV phy that young people should be prepared for this phase of their careers. The art of cookery, and the skills of clothing construction are supplemented by principles of management, planning, and buying. Basic information on home decora- tion, child care, and family relationships is included in the program. All of the work of the department is centered toward contributing to the stability and happiness of the American home. Waiting for Santa , created by students from the Homemaking department, won second prize in the novel division of the annual table setting contest sponsored by the Glass and China House in November. Members of the table setting contest team were Marva King, Margaret Walker, Delores Caesar, Leola Anderson and Trendle Shellner. A set of Franciscan pottery, service for four, was presented to Lincoln. — 67 — Biology No 1 These students are observing the Protozoa, a one-ce!led animal under the microscope. Through the medium of English and Civics emphasis is placed upon orientations, personal and social development, state and local government, recreational and vocational interests. The above students are discussing some of the early problems of Missouri. Newswriting Gathering news, writing, typing and editing it, proofreading, planning page lay- outs, and pasting copy are some of the activities which take place in the newswriting class where the school publication, THE LINCOLN CALLOTYPE, is published twice monthly throughout the school year. Students also gain wide experiences in advertising solicitation. They learn to take orders from local businesses, discuss contracts, draw up” the advertisement and perform other duties associated with the business end of getting out the news sheet. Through the study of newswriting many persons are given the opportunity to inter- view outstanding persons who visit the community, attend local and state journalism workshops and be present at press conferences. THE LINCOLN CALLOTYPE, one of the few high school papers distributed without charge to the students, teachers and administrators, goes into more than 1100 homes and is read enthusiastically by all who receive it. Boys Physical Education These boys demonstrate skill in balance and coordination in this pyramid formation. Driver Education Stresses Safe Driving Students learn to understand the responsible job of a driver and the importance of building sound traffic habits. The importance of observing traffic laws and a step-by- step procedure for driving a car are also taught in detail. Emphasis is placed upon the individual as a driver and as a pedestrian in order to show how the human element” affects driving and walking. 1 1 Girls Physical Education Rhythm and co-ordination are developed by this game played with 2 twelve inch sticks. Coach Lee’s versatile and highly synchron- ized grid machine ranked well with some of the former standout elevens developed in Lin- coln’s gridiron history. Lincoln’s eight victories included a brace of wins over Joplin and Sumner, one each over East St. Louis, Columbia, Oklahoma, and Webster Groves. Only to the Vashon Wolv- erines of St. Louis did they bow as two costly miscues benefited the invaders. In nine games Lincoln piled up a total of 216 points as compared to only 68 for the op- ponents. Only one school scored more than one touchdown against the Tigers. The Tiger attack was triggered by perhaps one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to wear the blue and gold — Eulish Herron. Herron was aided by a fine array of speedsters headed by Clyde Newman, Kenneth Cameron, John Bradley, Ben Mercer, Raymond Johnson, An- drew Jones and DeMorris Smith. These backs combined speed with deception and presented one of the most devastating ground games ever seen in local gridiron circles. Herron, the magi- cian, threw ten touchdown passes to four ex- ceptional ends — Sam Montgomery, Curtis Townsell, Richard Littles and Clifford Hop- kins. The great forward wall coached by line- coach James McCreary and end coach Laurence Wilson was led by Pete Ricketts, Theodore Hightower, James Smith, Phaon Swopes, Ger- ald Brown and Garfield Vetresse. This for- ward wall became so vicious against Webster Groves that the St. Louis team ended the game with a — 8 yards rushing. The highlight of the season was the Tiger’s two victories over their cross town rival — the Sumner Spartans. Lincoln’s scoring was led by left-half Ken Cameron, 42; fullback John Bradley, 34; end Clifford Hopkins, 28; full-back Ben Mercer, 24; end Richard Littles, 16; and right-half Clyde Newman, 12. — 82 — FIRST ROW (left to r( Eulish Herron; Roy Ba Smith; Gerald Browns £ ;i Line Coach; Phaonj Swc $ Hightower; MikeyLMablo THIRD ROWjt Laty e Bradley; Khilodorl mond Jbffnson; TY TEAM Henderson; Kenneth Cameron; Pete Ricketts; Jonds; Roy Butts; Famous McElwee; DeMorris Head Coach. They compiled a 14 game winning streak, and to date have only 1 loss. Contributing factors to this marvelous record have been the Big Blue devastating fast break attack, team poise and balance, a hustling defense, rugged rebounding, the skillful execu- tion of fundamentals and precision-like play patterns, a good bench”, and excellent overall team morale. While holding the opposition to a total of 749 points for a game average of 49 points, the Tigers compiled a total of 1200 points for an 80 point a game average. Scor- ing over one-third of these was phenomenal Sam Montgomery with 430 points to date. This gives him an average of 28 points a game, the highest in Lincoln history. Other scoring threats were pivot-post man Eugene Hawthorne and flashy Robert Wedgeworth. Dependable William Riggs usually initiated the play pat- terns.
