t Jorewor, J. Because of its limited size and because of the early closing of school, the Class of 1950 is not in a position to offer you the traditional yearbook. Instead, we are leaving this record of our sojurn at Lincoln. It is without the usual items which one associates with the type of publication a gradu- ating class leaves behind. At no point do we mount the winged horse and express in lofty language our senti- ments on departing from the hallowed halls of our Alma Mater. Yet, we sorrow at this hour of parting. The Class of 1950 hopes that its ambitions will not be judged by the slender volume it is leaving to be placed alongside previous annuals. 2

incoln Oh that some angel voice was near, T o sing these notes of gladness. To chase all silence from the air That fills our hearts with sadness ; For gladsome notes our lips would breathe of Lincoln. O, Lincoln High, O, Lincoln High, Tho from thy guiding hand we stray Thy memories will cheer the way; O, Lincoln High, O, Lincoln High, O, Lincoln High, O, Lincoln High. In fancy’s light we see thy walks, Her sunshine plays upon you. Her vapors linger ’round thy walls, Like ghosts of love so true. Like treasured dreams of times long past In Lincoln, dear old Lincoln, Like treasured dreams of times long past at Lincoln. LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL Kansas City, Missouri 1950

M, 5L S. eniorS This year Kansas City celebrates its centennial — 100 years of progress from a small insignificant community IN 1850 TO AN ENORMOUS, THRIVING, BUSTLING, MIDWESTERN METROPOLIS IN I 95 • THIS YEAR WE, TOO, CELEBRATE PRO- GRESS AND CHANGE. WE THE GRADUATING CLASS OF I 95 WERE THE VERY FIRST EIGHTH GRADE CLASS IN KANSAS ClTY AND THE LAST TENTH GRADE CLASS TO ENTER LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL. THIS IN ITSELF IS HISTORY-MAKING. IN 1945, THE FIRST EIGHTH GRADE GROUP TOOK ITS PLACE AT R. T. COLES VOCATIONAL AND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL. THESE STUDENTS, BEING THE FIRST EIGHTH GRADE, WERE PIONEERS WHO ENDEAVORED TO CLEAR THE PATH OF OBSTACLES FOR THE CLASSES TO COME. NATURALLY, THIS CLASS WAS SMALL BECAUSE THE STUDENTS WERE CHIEFLY THOSE THAT WERE NOT FITTED AND PREPARED TO DO NINTH GRADE WORK AT THE TIME. YET, IN SPITE OF ITS SIZE, THIS CLASS HAS REALLY MADE SOME FINE ACHIEVEMENTS. Our first year at Lincoln High School was climaxed by the Soph Hop. The outstanding students of this year were Alonzo Frazier, and Marietta Harris. The class officers who were presiding were. President, Marjorie Williams; Vice-President, Marietta Harris; Sec., Alline Jones; and Treas., Freddie Carter. These people did a good job of leading and directing the class. The Junior-Senior reception, a gala affair, was the crowning glory of the class during the junior year. The officers for this year were M. Harris, Pres.; Alonzo Frazier, Vice; Doris Taylor, Sec.; and E. Williams. Now we are Seniors and it is the opinion of every member of the class that the Senior Class is the best, and each Senior stands as a proud, dignified, sophisticated example for the lower classmen. It is probable that the Senior Class officers have been more successful with the group than any other class officers. In spite of such a small class, the Seniors went over their quota in the yearbook sales. The most IMPORTANT EVENT OF THIS YEAR FOR THE CLASS, EXCLUDING GRADUATION OF COURSE, WAS THE SPONSORING OF A CANDIDATE for Valentine Queen. Although the Seniors 1 candidate did not win, a burst of enthusiasm, excitement, and FUN WAS THE RESULT OF THIS COMPETITIVE FEAT. THE SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS ARE PRES. ALONZO FRAZIER; V ICE NORMA Williams; Sec. Doris Taylor; and Treasurer Jeannette Gray. The class as a whole set as its goal and objective, the job of becoming a SENSIBLE, HELPFUL PART OF ITS community. Every individual in the class has some ambition, but the main idea is to be useful and helpful to OTHERS AS WELL AS TO OURSELVES. There have been numerous achievements in our class, the most outstanding of which was accomplished by Alonzo Frazier, who was elected mayor on all-city High School Day. Alonzo is the first Negro high school student to RECEIVE THE HONOR OF BEING THE STUDENT MAYOR OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI ON H I GH SCHOOL DAY. THIS HONOR IS A GREAT ONE INDEED AND THE CLASS IS PROUD TO HAVE AS ONE OF ITS MEMBERS, THE FIRST PUPIL AT LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL TO BECOME A STUDENT MAYOR. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY OTHER FINE THINGS ACCOMPLISHED BY MEMBERS OF THE SENIOR CLASS. For INSTANCE, SIX OF THE STUDENTS IN THE CLASS HAVE FINISHED A REGULAR FOUR YEAR HIGH SCHOOL COURSE IN THREE YEARS. These students have done exceptionally well in completing this job, HAVE MAINTAINED GOOD STANDINGS IN SCHOLARSHIP AND CHARACTER, AND IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THEY BE GIVEN HONORABLE MENTION. THEY ARE. |. GERALDINE Wallace, 2. Sylvia Walker, 3. Constance Gilliam, 4. Gwendolyn Russell, 5. Doris Jean Thompson. The outstanding students of this year’s class were: I. Alonzo Frazier, 2. Marietta Harris, 3. Geraldine Wallace, 4. Kathryn Johnson, 5. Billie J. Duncan. These students have maintained good averages throughout the HIGH SCHOOL COURSE. This year, 1 95° » THE Senior Class of Lincoln High School will celebrate, not a centennial, but the culmina- tion OF A TASK WELL DONE. THESE STUDENTS ARE GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL WHICH IS INDEED A GREAT HONOR, BUT WHICH IS NOT IN THESE DAYS AND TIMES THE MAIN THING. |T IS BUT A STEPPING STONE IN THE COMPLETION OF AN EDU- CATION. Some of the members of the class realize this fact and are striving to continue their learning. This IS TO GREATLY COMPLIMENTED. Well, the class will leave dear ole Lincoln High w ith sorrow-filled hearts and tear-stained faces, but the Seniors will only leave in body for their spirits will remain forever with their school, Lincoln High.
