communication through language New tapes were purchased by the foreign language department this year to assist students in learning the basic elements of languages. French students received monthly maga- zines which acquainted them with French culture. Miss Christiane Pelle- grino, a native of Nice, France, and intern teachers, Miss Judith Dahlke and Miss Donna Traska, assumed teaching responsibilities in French. Language students were urged to uti- lize the laboratory facilities during free periods. Sophomore English students were divided into reading and composition sections. Juniors participated in quarterly studies composed of dra- matic reading, American literature, logic and semantics, and speech. Seniors concentrated on rhetoric one semester and English literature the other. Mr. Paul lngvoldstad's first semester literature classes compiled a booklet of original ballads after studyingthe medieval ages. if Students in language classes sing Christmas carols to aid in pronunciation and grammar. Fourth year French pupil, Joette Schultz, translates a tape in the foreign language lab. 21

muscles and musicians Potential improvements in the physical education department were studied this year in an attempt to expand the present program. New plans were made for classification of students in the future based on body type and general physical fitness. Students participated in special tests to determine their swimming ability and body strength. Instructors also examined the possibility of establish- ing an elective program. Numerous performances high- lighted the music departments ac- tivities this year. Band, orchestra, and chorus demonstrated their skills in the annual Mid-Winter Concert in addition to their other programs. Those who did not perform were again given the opportunity to listen to and discuss music through a mu- sic appreciation class. During band practice, Vern Soeldner awaits a signal from the director to begin playing. A clarinet section rehearses its music in preparation for the annual Homecoming parade. Ned Bouril concentrates on the bass part in anticipation of the annual fall play
