DEPARTMENTS MEET Social studies classes acquaint the pupil with his community. present problems that he may en- counter in his social adjustment, and prepare the student to be a more mature individual. The classes study various problems and try to work our solu- tions together. Family living also deals with prob- lems and questions which may arise among the pupils. Both classes enjoy making field trips to such places as aid them in their study. The purposes of the counselors are to guide the students in choosing the curriculum best suited to their needs, to give vocational assistance to gradu- ating seniors, and listen to the problems of stu- dents. Answering telephones, writing excuses, and consulting with students about schedules are all a part of each busy day. Learning to diagram sentences properly, and to know a gerund from a participle are only a small part of the duties of the English Department. The student also learns how to write and to speak well. along with being introduced to the literature of America and other parts of the world. Lincoln has excellent classes in the three major foreign languages - French, Spanish, and Latin. Through studying any of these, the pupil is not only able to learn the language itself, but he may also learn a great deal about the country and people from which the language comes. o- 599 ? 5, r-2 X051-'XL 52 l-Pl! if are Bliss Ro-v tloriclt Nlr Wil, 4tflENtfli: l,tl't Iv right are Nlr, Nlarit- llinldlllil, Mr. John Hc- m Lipfqyn. mfr. tryin D,m.,,- and Kfr- Cmrne llrftwni gvalctl is hr.-yor. The dissecting of frogs, mixing of chemicals, and the smell of sulfur dioxide characterize the Science Department. Each experiment reaches the entire schoolf-via the air vents. The science classes pro- vide a great deal of fun to the student along with plenty of hard work. Government provides the pupil with a knowledge of city. county, state. and federal governmental structures and operations as well as a study of comparative governments. Some classes actually put the teaching into practice by setting up a mock government in the classroom. There is also an op- portunity to learn about government in the history class, as the triumph and failures of past ones are revealed. Through the use of rulers, compasses, protractors, and slide rules. the students solve problems having to do with discounting, rate of speed, locus. and the Pythagorean Theorem. Included in the Mathemat- ics Department are geometry, algebra, trigonom- etry. commercial math, senior math. and general math. Many pupils realize the extent to which mathematics influences their daily living. Co-ordination, team work, and good sportsmanship are the aims of the Physical Education Depart- ment in all its activities. This department is re- sponsible for basketball, football, swimming, and golf events. . J' e t'-' 1 M.XTl'lEfNIfX'l'lCS: Left to right are Mr. Allan Haslitt. Ur. Robert Nlaten. Mr. Theodore Meister. For those who are not going to college, but plan to enter the business world, the Commercial De- partment offers a complete program. Bookkeeping, shorthand, and typing are only a few of the sub- jects taught. After the student has mastered these skills, he is able to put them into practice in office practice lab, by working for counselors and by going on business co-op. Lincoln High School is known for its excellent Music Department. During the year, it displays its talents at annual concerts and various functions at churches, clubs. and music festivals. Everyone in the community may attend the concerts and en- joy the accomplishments of the music students. The highlight of the year is the Annual Christmas Concert when Alumni return to sing the Hal- leujah Chorus. The special department puts the finishing touches on the school. and makes it complete. Through their hard work. we are able to be instructed in safer driving methods, provided with an easily af- ccssible library. and the handicapped given :is- sistance. Yve are grateful to them for providing us with the opportunity to receive a well-balanced education. Cookies. blouses. and bracelets are products turn- ed out every day by students of the Fine Arts De- partment. Here pupils are able to pursue their in- terests and hobbies, girls are able to prepare them- selves for their future role as homemakers, and those who take jewelry can turn their finished products into gifts for others. fezfu f' 1 1 N14 l Binh flxfi XRTS: Left to right are Mrs.. The heat. lighting. and general cleanliness of the school is takcn for granted hy exeryone around Lincoln. Few people exer stop to think of the long hours and tedious work put in hy our custodians to make it so. This group is always standing ln to help. whether it is in fixing hroken equipment or cleaning up after a school dance. The cafeteria stall is responsible tor the delectable hot lunches prepared for the students and teachers each day throughout the school year. These women also give up their evenings many timcs to prepare and serve hanquets for local clubs and organiza- ll'llt'. From eight to tixe the secretarial staff is lvnsy an- swering telephones. typing letters. running ditto and mimeograph machines. operating the book store. and giving information to the many people who pass through the office every day. Almost all husiness concerning Lincoln passes through their capable hands. Few realize to what extent the ef- ficiency of the school depends on them. Whirring of machines. pounding of hammers, and clicking of pencils and T-squares characterize the Applied Arts Department. Here students learn printing. mechanical drawing, drafting. and the op- eration of various machines. QEQLTV' ' l5'llRl.Xl. -Xlll'52 I..-ft to rigllt are Nlr. Walter liolnt. Xlt' rlan Pollock.
