This is the pro- gram in which all alumni choir and or- chestra members are invited to join the present choirs and orchestra in singing or playing the nllallelujah Chorus and is regarded as one of the most beautiful per- formances given here. At lunch time. the healthy. hungry stu- dents of L.H.S. flock to the cafeteria where members of the kitchen staff prepare warm well-balanced meals for both stu- dents and teachers. Assistant principal, Chester Nelson is one of the hundreds of people served here each day. SCHOOL HEADS Deciding when vacations should be, what new equipment is needed and how to solve the many problems concerned with the running of the Ferndale School District are the duties of the superin- tendents. On the shoulders of the prin- cipal and assistant principal go all the problems of a large high school. Their duties include maintaining order through- out the school. disciplining students when the occasion calls for it. and making sure their teachers, conduct remains on top. Our growing counselor stall has the big job of scheduling classes for each student twice a year as well as making sure stu- dents are attending their classes regularly and keep their marks on the proper level. ENGLISH The capable members of the English de- partment do much to provide the neces- sary education for writing to obtain the most effective results. Reading and speak- ing are also major concerns of this depart- ment as is revealed by courses such as journalism. drama. American and world literature. literature and composition. bus- iness English. and radio speech. which are expertly taught to maturing Lincoln- ites. LAXCLAGE French. Spanish and Latin are the exer- popular language courses offered at LHS. Each language course consists of four semesters. the first two in which the pri- mary emphasis is placed on acquiring the vocabulary necessary to carry on every- day conversation and doing simple read- ing and writing. The last two semesters are devoted to reading literature of the country. studying advanced grammatical factors. and becoming better acquainted with the cultural aspects of the foreign land. APPLIED AND FINE ARTS The department of Applied and Fine Arts is one of the largest in operation at LHS. Included under this broad heading are creative subjects such as jewelry, cer- amics, art. leather and wood crafts, the shop courses, wood, metal, machine, and print, and mechanical drawing. Courses such as crafts and jewelry are usually taken for less , ,practical reasons as they offer hours of pleasant and self-satisfying creative work that can be kept for years to come. Classes such as these in the curriculum of LHS fill the need of the teen-ager for variation and creativeness. NTIWFIC AND SPI-1Cl.-XL lllfl'.-XRTNIHYIWS Band, orchestra, and several choirs pro- vide an outlet for the talented students in the school. Besides their regular classes, extra rehearsals are often called in prep- aration for concerts. contests. parades. and other music activities. Assistance for handicapped children. training in safer driving. learning through the sources of our library, and keeping order in study hall are all handled through the special department. SOCIAL STLDIES The Social Studies department consists of instruction in world history. geography. American history, social studies. Ameri- can government. and family living. The departmenfs aim is to develop in the student an understanding of people and conditions in life and everyday living, which will help the student face with conhdence problems that will inevitably arise in his future. OFFICE The office workers are some of the nicest people in Lincoln. Although there is a lot of work to he done in the office. they are always readv with a cheery smile for teachers, students. and visitors. Their var- ied johs include answering the telephone, typing, answering questions, and directini visitors to the school. CLSTODIAX5 Among the hardest working people on the stad at Lincoln are the custodians. Few realize the extent of their work. They clean up after every dance no matter how late. keep the furnace going on bitter cold days. clean the building after Adult Edu- cation classes. and keep out school in top- notch running condition. CAFETERIA One group which really deserves a vote of thanks for the entire school is the cafe- teria workers. Nourishing. well-balanced meals are prepared daily for the students and faculty of Lincoln and for numerous banquets and luncheons. As the mobile must have a center point about which the rest balances, so must a school have a center joint by which the school is balanced. As the governing body of Lincoln, the Student Council makes rules and gen- erally controls the lives of the students here at Lincoln. Officers are elected by the whole student body and a boy and girl representative are elected from each class. Activities are planned at their weekly meetings during the year. This sem- ester they have been working on plans for changing the governing system of our school. This is necessary because of the fact that we will soon have no mid-year graduating classes. This means that there will be only eight class representatives and four officers to do all the council work. In getting ideas for a new student gov- ernment, several members of the council have visited other schools and watched their forms of government in action. Another project of the student council is the parking lot committee. They issue stickers to the students and faculty who wish to use the parking lot. A check is made to keep out the cars without these stickers. This committee has also been discussing the possibility of paving the lot with money from the magazine sale. Because of this council, our school is indeed kept in perfect balance. 78 The election board, headed by Judy Giles. is one of the school's busiest or- ganizations at the beginning of each sem- ester. They are in charge of all class and student council elections. Handing out petition blanks, checking them, making up the various ballots. and counting the results are among their many duties. These hard working members cannot run for an office while theyire on the board. They will leaf through it's photo-Hlled pages and be reminded of school-day friends, teachers, activities and the high school itself. The Log is a gaily- bound edition of a Lincolnite's scrapbook treasured by those who keep it because of the school-day memories it brings to reality in the mind of the reader. The auto- graphs and comments of classmates written on the inside pages of the year book are as traditional as the Log itself. Although the Log is edited annually, its unfailling occurrence is expected by the students, and few realize the work that is required to produce such a publication. The year book is put out by the Log staff, a group of students, under the supervision of a faculty adviser, and under the direction of a student editor. This year's editor is an active 12A, Marilynn McNaught, and the faculty adviser is Mr. Joseph Zac- cardelli. These two personalities have the responsibility of the organization and completion of the school annual. It's a big job that takes a lot of work. The Log dis- plays between its covers evidence of time and effort put forth in layout, copy, art work, advertising and photography. Beneath the general headings come others in more detail: the seniors, underclassmen, girls' and boys' sports, clubs, music ac- tivities, faculty and subject departments. The staff begins its task in September and the work isn't completed until May. There are deadlines to be met and endless Wednesday night and week-end meetings to attend. lt's a lot of work, but we've failed to mention the fun that is experienced by the staff. The first thing to realize is that these students enjoy their work - or they wouldnit be doing it! Secondly, friends are made and new and different as- pects of life are encountered. Yes, it's a lot of work. but we have enjoyed doing it and we hope that you enjoy our product l LAYOUT AND COPY QTAFF The layout and copy stali including from left to ri ht Bert Owen Sally Clendenm Charlene Ingham Karen Simpson Gwen Hunter and Judy Snellm take a break from their tedious work of cutting pasting and writing STA FF Seated from left to right: Bev Brons, Shirley Stephens. The title of the dannve Dead- line Dragf, presented by the Lincolnian staff in January shows graphically what occupies the minds of the staff of a high school paper. Staff members must he ahle to under- stand the complexities of a school, know' and understand the people who are a part of it, and be able to put their thoughts down on paper comprehensively. A high school paper is a greater force in the working of the school than most people realize. Through its news columns, it keeps Lincolnites informed on happen- ings around the school, through its sports columns it heightens interest in school athletics, and through its editorial col- umns it helps shape the opinions of the school. czgadaat i , itli L c no :t l i I ,Z CAMERA CLUB-Mr. Don Gray, advisor, ex- plains camera techniques to, left to right: Tom Turrentine, Joe Koons, ,lim Needham, Brian Westveer, Glenn Kopp, Toni Erwin. f f 1 f y 'll If -Gil STAFF- left to right: A1 Zalewa, Sandra Smith, Dolores Maylonc, Larry Abrams, Carol Evan, Anne O'Neal and Ieanne Watt. That would be an accurate description of our Choir A. Under the direc- tion of Mr. Otto Brown. it has developed into a wonder- ful singing group. lf it ever got anything less than a one rating at a singing festival it would be quite a surprise. ltis just habit for them to be the best. but it takes a lot of hard work. Every fourth hour you can hear them re- hearsing for a future concert. One of the main events of the year is the Christmas concert. Also they have a spring concert, several singing festivals with competi- tion, and often they sing at some church service around Easter time. The best of .these Choir A singers have a small group of their own called the Madrigals. Most of their music was written in the Elizabethan era and is sung without any accompaniment. lt is very beautiful and very difficult. Members of this group must not only have good voices. they also have to put in a lot of extra time. Usually they practice during their lunch hours. One of their main projects is singinig for different groups and clubs in the community. 84 'O ,1 - 1 Gi 'Z -- lik f 'A Q1 :Eva V 2 4 , , , t . This spring Mrs. Mildred Hat-heller took her group down to Cleve- land. Ohio where they spent a week-end at the Hotel Clereland during a music conference there. Our orchestra was the only high school orchestra from this area invited to play at the conference. Credit for the course is giqven but it requires many extra hours of practice including early morning and late evening rehearsals to reach the perfection they maintain. ,X trip to Cleveland, guest appearances, and helping out during graduation exercises were the main duties of the orchestra this semester. The club, advised by Mrs. Jacqueline Elliott, presents a French dinner in the fall or early winter to raise money for their annual trip to Quebec. Members who have been in the club for two or more years are eligible for the springtime trip. Although the dinner is their biggest money-making project, they also give an all-school dance, have a yearly lily of the valley sale, and take charge of the concession stand at the football games. Since the arrival of Mr. C60.Cianetti at Lincoln, the Spanish Club has resumed functioning. The purpose of this club is to create a better knowledge and under- standing of the Spanish language and people. To achieve this purpose the club has given an all school dance, 'Bailamosf sponsored Pan-American Week, and visited several Spanish restaurants. They also went to see a Spanish ballet at the Schubert Theater. The club has gotten off to a great start this year, and will probably do a lot more in the future. Under the leadership of Miss Maxine Galloway, 'llnter Nosf' the Latin Club has been active for many years. The biggest money-making project of the club is a Roman banquet given in the spring. I I I The National Honor Society is a very useful and helpful organization to both the school and the community. lts members are elected by the faculty for having the attributes of good character, honesty, and the ability to maintain a 3.3 average. Activities include teaching, assistance on Career Day, charity work and various other service projects. Under the supervision of Mrs. Elsie Harper, the club mem- bers are always bustling about either working on or planning new projects. In contrast to this intellectual group, are the sportsmen of the Fish and Wildlife and Rifle Clubs. Although both clubs meet indoors, the atmosphere is definitely out- door, especially in the Fish and Wildlife Club. Advisors of these active groups are Mr. Joseph Michaels and Mr. Bill Brown, respectively. This contrast is a clear example of the perfect balance maintained in our school between the scholastic and entertaining activities. This illustrates the completeness of our school mobile as compared to the completeness of an artistic mobile. 97 fx The Student Center is the mobile,s con- necting point between the school and the outside social activities. Students congre- gate there during lunch or study hours to eat, play ping pong. or just gah. Unfortun- ately, due to overcrowded conditions the Center will not exist next year, but for the past year it has provided an enjoyable spot for Lincolnites. Cont-cntrating on his pin, pon is Bob Cook vshlle others enjoy their lunch s Although it doc-suit show in this pltture students haxe spent many hours decoratlnv the walls of the Center, whiuh reallys looks pretty good now Wm glad ' Another definite branch of the mobile is in the social field of Lincolnites. This is the lnter-Club Council which was organized four years ago under the direction of Miss Olive Maxwell. The Council has grown in four years to a membership of seventeen, one representa- tive from each community club. The purpose of the ICC is to correlate the activities of the clubs and enforce the rules by which the clubs must abide. Their problems include how the clubs should take in new members, how long the trial bers bers New ICC. Coach John MacGregor had words of praise for his all-around star, Denny Ford, plus Don Brecht, Dick Serfozo, and especially for diminutive freshman diver Bill Teeple. who became the first freshman to win the EML diving championship.
