That's all that could be heard around the campus of Lincoln High way back in October and November, 1948. What team were they talking about? You couldn't have forgotten already, could you, because last year the Lincs had the GREATEST football team of all time. Stars like ALL-State Jack Crittendon, Jim Monteith, Dan Harpold, Guy Hayes, Pete Eber- hardt along with asquad of 40 boys who were good enough to be 1st string on any high school squad. That's how good our football team was. In the season's opener, the Lincs were upset for the 3rd straight year by the Berkley Bears by a 6-0 count. From then on it was nothing but Guy Hayes' plunging, Jim Monteith's accurate passing to Pete Eberhardtg and Jack Crittendon's and Dan Harpold's excellent de- fensive and offensive team play. The entire team played in almost every game because of Coach Ted Meister's two platoon' system which payed off in every game except the one with our arch-enemy Royal Oak The Acorns interrupted a 6 game winning streak, 12-7 It took one of those one-of-a- million fumbles in the air to knock Lincoln out of the top 10 in the State As it is, we finished 12th MOST EXCITING GAME The most exciting game of the year was the 13 12 defeat of Birmingham For the 2nd straight year Guy Hayes has won a ball game with his 'educated toe The Railsplitters were behind in the 3rd quarter 13 0 and then it was Monteith s running 25 yards down to the 5 and bucking it over but Hayes missed the extra point Midway in the last quarter Monteith passed to Eberhardt for 8 yards and the tying T D All eyes were then upon Hayes and his toe Guy promptly stepped up and split the crossbars for what proved to be the winning point The Lincs had to stave off a last minute attack by the Maples inwhich they marched 55 yards downfield and then just as time ran out a pass just failed to click and theRa1lspl1tters were again breathing easy SWIMIVIING SPOTLITE Swimming was also in full swing for the first time The pool was closed for about two months for repairs and ithampered the swimmers for a time However they hada successful first season winning three and losing three In the E M L swimming meet the splashers finished a creditable fourth behind B11- mingham Mt Clemens and Hazel Park Del Leach and Larry Littlefield were the outstanding senior swimmers and Guy Hayes Ron Ransier and Bob Grieg took diving honors in almost every meet FOOTBALL SCORE Opponent Berkley Grosse Pointe Ann Arbor Birmingham Mt Clemens Port Huron Royal Oak E Detroit Total 4 Average Score HIGH SCORER Pete Eberhardt SPECIAL RECOGNITION Jack Crittendon All State News Times Free Press Jim Monteith 2nd string All State News Pete Eberhardt first annual Most Valuable Player award BASKETBALL SCORES Opponent Ann Arbor Port Huron Hamtramack Pontiac Birmingham Port Huron E Detroit Hazel Park Royal Oak Birmingham L O Opponent L E Detroit Port Huron Mt Clemens Grosse Pointe Hazel Park Hazel Park DeLaSalle Pontiac Kalamazoo Central Totals 85 O 7 Average scores SPECIAL RECOGNITION Harry Lauder All State News Times Third string All State Free Press HIGH SCORER Harry Lauder 227 points 13 point Average DQ, L.
