RICHARD TAN Men of few words are the best men, F.F,A. 1,2,3,4:Chorus2,3,4: F.F.A, Annual Reporter, SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1949 thirty-three ambitious freshman began their high school life under the guidance of Miss Jane Wilsey. Our class officers were president, Leroy Maki: vice president, Nancy Barney: secretary, Jean Sunnarborg, treasurer, Richard Richardson. Thirty-one students returned to their sophomore year at Esko High School with Anita Mat- tinen joining us from Minneapolis, Heading our class this year were president, Iames Juntuneng vice president, Don Pykkoneng secretary, Diane Himangog treasurer, Donald Wigingtong and our faithful advisors Miss Jane Wilsey and Mr. Leslie Knuti. It was during our sophomore year that we sponsored a very successful Sok-Hop for the senior high school, We were all eager to begin the series of events that made up our junior year. The top most being the prom-banquet and the junior class play. We found them both to be as enjoyable as we had anticipated, The Phantom Bells a mystery, directed by Miss Marjorie Steil, was pre- sented in the fall of 1951. Together with our advisors Miss Vivian Georgeson, and Mr. Larry Langen, we put on the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, a project requiring a lot of work but un- animously agreed worth while. Don Pykkonen held the distinguished office of president of the class. Other officers include Nancy Barney, vice-presidentg Jean Sunnarborg, secretary: and Bette Sunnarborg, treasurer. All this and much more concluded a very enjoyable junior year. September 2, 1952 marked the beginning of the last year of our fast closing high school careers. The long awaited time to be Dignified Seniors had finally arrived. Miss Steil and our principal Mr, Duane Converse were elected advisors of the Senior Class., James Hannerlund was elected president ofour class, Those serving under him were, Dale Luokkala, vice-presidentg Yvonne Hennum, secretaryg and Anita Mattinen, treasurer. They greatly helped in making our senior year a very memorable one. Miss Steil did a wonderful job in directing our play No Boys Allowed a three act comedy, This play terminated our acting days. Our only regret as this annual goes to press is that all our yearly events cannot be included in our book, namely the Prom-Banquet, Excursions, Baccalaureate Services, and the most important of all our high school events - The Commencement Exercises, 15 ,fs JUNIOR CLASS FIRST ROW: Viola Johnson, Elaine Mattson, Joan VanValkenburg, Robert Gordon, Donald Johnson, Nancy Hen- num, Sylvia Moilanen, Alice Gallea. Lauren Stenroos was elected to represent us in the Student Council. As sophomores we elected Donald Oja, presidentg Marvin Heikkinen, vice- presidentg Bette Pera, secretaryg Dennis Juntunen, treasurerg Joan Kinnunen, Lauren Stenroos, Student Council representatives. Our class advisors were Miss Andres and Mr. Knuti. During this year we held a successful Sok Hop for the entire high school. During our junior year we elected June Puline to lead our class as presi- dentg Marvin Heikkinen, vice-presidentg Gladys Juntunen, secretaryg Sylvia Moilanen, treasurerg Dennis Juntunen, Joan Kinnunen, Lauren Stenroos,Student Council. Most of our junior year will be spent raising funds for the junior-senior banquet, with our junior class play being the most important project for raising these funds. As this annual goes to press we, of the junior class, with the help of our ad- visors, Miss Georgesen and Mr. Clarence Johnson, shall be making preparations for the junior-senior banquet and prom which will be held in the spring. 16 SOPHOMORES as ig, 'KKK FIRST ROW: Sharon Ann Bergeman, June Johnson, Joyce Kalli, Richard Smith, Roger Bottila, Donald Rontri, Darwin Bottila,Donald Rowe, SECOND ROW: Raymond Lawson, Alma Granholm, Carol Martin, Edna Pyk- konen, Shirley Mattson, Elvie Kinnunen, Otto Oja, Warner Johnson. GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Girls' Athletic Association began the 1952 - 53 school year with the initiation of twelve sophomore girls. Altogether there are forty-two members in the G.A.A. Activity nights have been Monday nights from seven to nine. We started off the year playing volley ball. Teams were formed for tournaments with the top team getting ten extra points. The Huskies with Bette Sunnarborg captain, Fighting Finns with Nancy Barney captain, and Junior Jabber Jaws with Pat Van Wave captain, tied for first place, with the Activate and Scarps fcaptains Carol Juntti and Elvie Kinnunen res- pectivelyj close behind them. At Christmas we had a party, which was very much enjoyed. The girls went caroling and exchanged gifts. Onlanuary 10tha Play Day was held, which lasted from nine a.m. to four p.m. Skating started off the day and volley ball, basketball, and dancing were some of the main events. All through the colder months, the girls skated on the school skating rink. Sometimes they spent their activity nights skating, and many extra points were earned this way. Basketball has been one of the G.A.A.'s most ex- citing activities. While the boys were playing in the basketball tournaments in Duluth, the girls were having their own tournaments during activity night. There were never any spectators, but the enthusiasm and noise could be compared to the boys' games. The Maybeys, with Elaine Mattson and Pat Van Wave as co-captains walked off with honors and the extra points. The So- mokse fEskomos backwardsj, Nancy Barney captain, and the Tippy-Ten fAll sophomoresj, June Johnson captain, bottled it up for second place. The only thing the girls complained about was, Where did they get those referees? Bowling trips have also been among the activities of the G.A.A. The girls are taken to Cloquet by bus to bowl. The high scores for the first trip were Mavis Mattson 124 and Carol Juntti 123. This year the officers of the G.A.A. were Nancy Barney, president, Phyllis Bergstedt, vice-president, Carol Juntti, secretary, Diane Himango, treasurer, Ma- vis Mattson, Spotlight and annual reporter, Jean Sunnar- borg, historian, Nancy Gustafson, senior recorder, Pat Van Wave, junior recorder, and Kay Juntunen, sopho- more recorder. We have had a very enjoyable year in G.A.A. and wish to thank our advisor Mrs. Mianowski, for making this possible.
