Our initiation proved to be the big event of the year. The threats of the sophomores brought our hearts into our mouths, but we all survived with one consolation -- next year we would get revenge. During our sophomore year Edwin Bergstedt was chosen class president. We seemed to have more fun initiating the freshmen than being initiated the previous year. Just before school began, many of us attended the State Fair as band or 4-H members. This year was topped by an outing. One of the highlights of our junior year was the presentation of Smart Boyi' directed by Miss Pederson. Another special feature was the Junior-Senior Banquet which was held at the Medical Arts Building in Duluth. This, our senior year, has been a series of interesting events. We have all tried to no avail to fulfill the role of dignified seniors. Our class was well represented in extra-curricular activi- ties. The entire A team of basketball was composed of seniors. Many of us will have the op- portunity of attending the activities banquet in the spring. Everyone is working industriously on the Lincoln Log, and as it goes to press the class expectantly awaits the Senior Class Play, Junior-Senior Banquet, and finally commencement. The class officers are: President, Edwin Bergstedt, Vice-President, Genelle Huffmang Sec- retary-Treasurer, Esther Erkkila. The motto is Here endethg here beginnethvg the flower- Sweet Pea, and the colors - Old Rose and Silver. Under the able guidance of our advisers, Principal Herbert Knuti and Miss Stella Peder- son, we have enjoyed our senior year immensely. C911 hun-an-Lf .lunior Class History Twenty-two freshies stood shivering in the halls on that fateful Initiation Day back in '37. What would the sophomores do? Well, we soon found out! They certainly let us know that we were their subordinates! Yes, the initiation was the main event of that year. We had as our pres- ident, Marian Eskog vice-president, Merton Eskog secretary, Frances Dyerg treasurer, Harry Kauppig and reporter, Frances Dyer. These officers managed our class very well throughout the year with the able support of our adviser, Miss Sandstrom. We left school that year with the I'l1 be in the senior high next year look on our faces. When the next September rolled around, there was nobody new-nobody gone! Everything was the same except that now we were sophomores. How we planned to initiate those poor fresh- men. And give it to them we did, even though they outnumbered us more than two to one. .We tried something new that year. Instead of being so hard on the poor dears, we had a party in the evening and really got acquainted! As our class officers, we elected William Wainio for Presi- dent, Harold Mostrum, vice-presidentg Frances Dyer, secretary-treasurer, and Ainie Maki, reporter. One of the outstanding features of the year was a skating party in January. This was the first year we were enjoying our own rink on the school grounds. We left school that year looking for- ward to seeing each other again and starting the almost most important year of being juniors. Our class enrollment increased to twenty-four in our junior year, but before the year was over the enrollment decreased to twenty-two when Marian and Merton Esko left us. The two new pupils were Helen Peters and John Baisley. This year our able president was William Wainiog vice-president, Harold Mostromg secretary-treasurer, Luella Juntuneng and reporter, Harry Kauppi. We were well advised by Miss Harney and Mr. Ellison. With the junior year came the excitement of rings, pictures, class play, Lincoln Log, and junior-Senior Banquet. Our class play, The Phan- tom Bells , which was directed by Miss Pederson, was well attended. Everyone agreed that the entire class couldnit have done better. We still have to laugh when we think of poor Shirley Polo shivering in the ghost's den. After' the play came the important job of selecting our rings. The Lincoln Log, which we all enjoyed working on, will bring back pleasant memories in years to come. So again we are leaving dear, old Lincon High for another brief three months and then to come hack to the busy senior year. Looking back through the years, we certainly don't like the idea of leaving our dear school forever--but we,re going to go forth and be a credit to the school, so that everyone can say with pride, 6'That person graduated from Lincoln . eleven HJ: M ' Q TWT- ' ' J Z 1 '-r --M-wpff-if-W--W -if --A- - 1,T..1.,,.,.,,, ,A 'lik JOHN H. The Tommies along with Carlton represented the sub-district at the district tournament in Duluth. The team was unfortunate in drawing the tournament champs, Two Harbors, and it was defeated in the first game. Captain Edwin Koivisto, high-scoring senior center, was one of the finest offensive players Esko has had. ' Forrest Larson, senior forward, used his height to considerable advantage under the bank- boards. Kenneth Hallback, our star guard, was kept out by injuries most of the season. Oswald Koivisto and Edwin Bergstedt, two diminutive senior forwards, were a constant threat to the opponent. Leslie Seikkula, junior guard and three-year letterman, received the free-throw trophy for the second consecutive year. John Johnson, small but shifty guard, was a constant scorer all season. Bill Wainio, a three-year letterman, was out with a knee injury during the first semester. Clifford Johnson, junior forward, although handi- K capped by size, made up for this by continually out fak- ing larger opponents. Elton Lassila, playing his first season with the Tommies, was a consistent scorer. Last but not least there's Coach L. Knuti and Stu- ,MH dent Manager Bill Baisley. The boys enjoyed playing i under Mr. Knuti and they also appreciate the care the manager took in handling their equipment. The Bees copped the conference BH team title for the third successive season. nineteen -...-........--......,..,. ....,,...,..-,.,.7,.... .,,. ..... . ,.,-,,,, ,M -U-A 1 Girls' Athletic Association FIRST ROW: Esther Johnson, Marian Bergstedt, Martha Koivisto, Mary Sampson, Alice Klemo, Evelyn Randa, Bernice Hill, Edna Koski, Joyce' Juntunen, Mary Franciscog SECOND ROW: Mardell Comfort, Mildred Nelson, Adeline Tan, Margaret Karjala, Hulda Tan, Velma Maki, Gladys Juntti, Dorothy Luokkala, Alice Sunnarborg, Martha Juntunen, Irene Liupakka, Shirley Polo, Miss Catharine Harney, adviser: THIRD ROW: Verna Juntti, Ainie Maki, Ruth Kinnunen, Astrid Kesti, Emmeline Baisley, Elsie Jaska, Alice Sampson. Florence Korby. The Girls' Athletic Association, the only all girl club in our high school, was orginized fif- teen years ago, and its membership has been increasing rapidly. This year the membership is fifty. Any girl in the senior high school may join provided she earns twenty-five points by De- cember. In order to receive a G.A.A. emblem she must earn five hundred points. To receive a pin, which is awarded to her in the senior year, she must earn one thousand points. The G.A.A. participates in many activities. These include baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, hiking, skating and almost every outdoor sport. A G.A.A. conference is held every year and delegates from every club in the Arrowhead region are invited to attend. This is a big day for those who are privileged to attend. A variety of entertainment is available, and the girls of the different clubs get acquainted. Last year the conference was held at Cloquet, this year Coleraine is acting as hostess. The G.A.A. Variety Show has always been one of the outstanding events of the year. This year the program included both local and outside talent. This being leap year, the girls popped the question and invited the boys to a Leap Year Party which was held in the high school gym. Bunco and other games were enjoyed by those attending. Q Under the guidance of Miss Harney, our G.A.A. has proved to be a success. With a combined membership of one hundred ten, the junior and senior 4-H Clubs have taken an active part in school and community life. Ar Christmas the club distributed baskets to the needy, in February it sponsored an annual basket and bunco social, and in April presented :1 variety program. The organization also entered the 4-H play contest which was held at Cromwell. In the preceding year several members attended the State Fair and brought honors to the club. Edward Maki, Clifford Johnson and John Johnson attended as a judging team, while Hulda: Tan, Helmi Kivisto and Alice Sampson represented the sewing club with a demonstration. Helen Tan entered the cake baking contest. Ar the Activities Banquet senior members with the required number of points will be pre- sented emblems for their achievements. The officers of the senior club are: president, Ainie Maki, vice-president, Hulda Tang sec- retary, Mildred Nelson, treasurer, Genelle Huffmang and reporter, Velmi Maki. Ten girls of the organization form the Chamber Music Group. The Glee Club is one of the busiest organizations in our school. In the year of 1938-39, they sang at an Easter program at the Finnish Lutheran Church in Duluth, the Contest Festival in Proctor, Christmas program at the Washington School, band and glee club concert, and the baccalaureate and commencement exercises. iDuring the present year, 1939-40, the organization made a radio broadcast over station WEBC, Duluth, sang at P.T.-A Christmas program, and Finnish relief program at the Midway Church. The Chamber Music group also sang at many of the above mentioned places and also for the Finnish relief program at the Hillside School. The officers of the organization are: President, Florence Korbyg Secretary-treasurer, Fran- ces Dyer, and Librarian, Luella Juntunen. twenty-six 4 Y..-,.,4..c..., ... -- Band r BAND MEMBERSHIP CORNETS: Florence Korby, Bernice Maunu, Lauren Hiukka, Gloria Richardson, Bertha Ropponen, Hulda Tan, Helen Johnson: UHORNS: Betty Esko, Gladys Juntti, Emmeline Baisley: SAXOPHONES: Elsie Gustafson, Shir- ly Johnson, Mavis Burkett, Phyllis Olson, Ferne Mattson, Marjory Hallbackg HCLARINETS: Verna Tan, Edna Koskl, Allan Juntunen, Adeline Tan, Mabel Esko, Frances Dyer, Martha Juntunen, Mary Sampson, Sylvia Nlemi, Ruth Mattson: HBARITONES: Gordon Peterson, John Baisley, Dale Hendrickson, TROMBONES: William Wainio, Harold Mostrum, Kenneth Erickson, Harland Juntunengt BASSES: Edwin Kolvisto, Kenneth Erickson, Martin Mallineng UDRUMS: Edward Maki, Genelle Huffman, Bruce Otto, Kenneth Comfort, Velma Maki. The senior band, with an average membership of forty, maintains a balanced instrumenta- tion by means of the junior band. As soon as a junior band member has demonstrated aptitude for instrumental music and received a good foundation on his instrument, he is promoted to the senior band. The senior band offers its members a unique opportunity to develop their talent through free instruction and free use of school owned instruments. A point system provides the basis for earning a band letter. This letter, which bears a stripe for each year the required number of points has been earned, is presented in the senior year. Prepartion for and participation in the State Contest for Class C Concert Bands provides excellent training and experience as well as stimulus for hard work. A very favorable demonstra- tion was made by the band at the District Contest held at Proctor in 1939. The band always supplies much pep and entertainment at the home basketball games and at the tournament. A few of the other engagements filled by the band during the past two years were: Carlton and Thomson Fairs, Farmers' Club Banquet and the Annual Band-Glee Club Spring Concert at the Lincoln School. The band is directed by Mr. Rudolph Hauge. Allan Juntunen is presidentg Francis Dyer, vice-presidentg Mabel Esko, secretary-treasurerg Verna Tan, librariang and John Baisley, prop- erty manager. !W9I1!Y-SEVCII X .....-.......-,..,........-..-..t .. - ,.
