Miss Louise Swenson, Mrs. A. L. Winterquist, Mr. Thomas Harney, and Miss Pearl Kuitu were teaching in the district that year, the last of the old rural school days. Four hundred and twelve grade children were enrolled but no high school pupils. In the fall of 1920 twenty- nine high school pupils were enrolled. Of these twenty-nine, one, Miss Hilda Esko, was a senior. She was graduated in the spring of 1921, the Iirst graduating class of the Thomson Township Public Schools. Since then 259 boys and girls have been graduated from our high school. Some of the older graduates remember the slow-moving horse- drawn busses. These pupils will recall how they left home before seven o'clock in the morning and arrived at the Lincoln School some- times as late as ten o'clock, and then left for home about two o'clock in the afternoon. There was no extra-curricular transportation. There were few automobiles. The boys and girls walked home from basket- ball games, parties, and programs. Some of the graduates will recall how we went to basketball games at Cromwell, Barnum, and Moose Lake in the old Model T Ford truck. Sometimes we were sick from carbon monoxide gas, and sometimes we were stuck in the snow drifts. Roads were not snow-plowed. Now twelve modern motor busses bring the pupils to and from school. Motor busses also bring the children home from extra-cur- ricular activities, programs, and parties. The traditional academic high school courses have been enriched with practical courses in home eco- nomics, industrial training, agriculture, and the commercial subjects of shorthand, typewriting, and bookkeeping. Throughout this time, be- ginning in 1920. the extra-curricular activities of 4-H, basketball, band, orchestra, dramatics, and glee club have been offered, but since the school began providing transportation for these activities, they have grown to be much larger factors in the school program and student life than they were when students had to provide their own means of returning home in the evenings. This little book with its pictures and articles should be a happy reminder to us who have had some part in this progress, that we have but done our duty, and that in the words of Longfellow: Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way: But to act, that each to-morrow Find us farther than to-day. Senior Class History Our freshman class of thirty-nine pupils began our high school days in September of 1934. At the first class meeting the following oflicers were elected: Sylvia Kesti, president, Bernard Koivisto, secretary-treasurer: and Clarence Carlson, reporter. Miss Stuckman was our able adviser. With the dangers of initiation over, every one concentrated their attention on their studies. We were very proud of the fact that classmate Bernard Koivisto was on the first team in basketball. The first lap of our climb was completed that year with a picnic. During our sophomore year, Clarence Carlson fulnlled the part of class president. We seemed to have more fun initiating the freshmen than being initiated the previous year. Some of our classmates became known in 4-H Club work on Achievement Day. Many of us were in the operetta, Maid of the Mill. Fred Seikkula won acclaim by winning a first prize at the Tri-State Judging meet. This year was topped off by a party. A new gym and an addition to the school greeted those of us who enrolled as juniors. Sylvia Kesti was elected class president. As this year's highlights we presented Broadway to Hollywood, directed by Miss Kommes, in the fall, and acted as hosts at the junior- senior banquet in the spring. We finished this year by having a new form of procession at commencement. ' Last September a group of twenty-nine pupils, suddenly assuming dignity and poise, reported for their last canto of high school life. Just before school began, many seniors had attended the state fair as band members or 4-H exhibitors. At the first class meeting held, the following officers were elected: Lauri Hatinen, presidentg Raymond Johnson, vice-president: Clarence Carlson, secretary-treasurer: and Mr. L. B. Olson and Mr. Herbert Knuti, advisers. Touch football gained a strong foothold on the boys during the fall, the senior team finally taking the honors. Some special features of the year- Helen Tan was crowned potato queen of Carlton County. Beatrice Lehto, our own expert on the accordion, gained new popularity as the result of her radio broadcasting. Several new organizations, the Hydro- quinone Club, Pep Club, and Swing Band made their appearances. During the winter months our class had a skating party. We presented Hobgoblin House, a chilly mystery play, as our contribution to the theatrical world. With the return of spring, those seniors who hadidone outstanding work in extra-curricular activities during their senior high years received emblems at the Activities Banquet. Kid Day came around. The seniors were the guests of the juniors at the junior-senior banquet. At our graduation exercises, Sylvia Kesti, with the highest aver- age in our class, will give the valedictory, and Helen Tan. next highest ranking. will give the salutatory. Thus. on the eve of commencement, we shall join the ranks of many others who have been graduated from Lincoln High. Juniors MAVIS BURKETT The unspoken word never does harm. Miss Seglem was chosen adviser of our large class. In the eighth grade, five had dropped out, leaving a class roll of forty. This time Miss Lindquist kept watch over us. The class was divided into HA and B divisions for convenience in con- ducting classes. With anxiety, we looked forward to the next year, when we would be grown up ninth graders. In the fall of the year 1935, thirty-nine of us, as freshmen, en- tered our first year of high school. We knew each other well because of our previous associations in the seventh and eighth grades. This group was very ably and successfully started on its upward climb by Miss Kihlgren, class adviser. The main activity of the year was the oh-so-much-dreaded initiation. Election of class ofiicers brought about the following results: president, Charles Lehto: vice-president, Evelyn Koski: secretary, Fred Johnson: and treasurer, John Hill. En- couraged and in high spirits, we left school in the spring, hoping to return in the fall with more enthusiasm to be counted among the senior high students. Much to our sorrow, September of 1936 showed that our class roll had dropped to twenty-seven. The class adviser was Mr. Leslie Knuti. The oflicers were Evelyn Koski, president: Charles Lehto, vice-president: and Ralph Peterson, secretary-treasurer. Again initia- tion proved itself to be the main feature of the year, but this time we sophomores, feeling very much superior to the freshmen, gained revenge for our treatment of the year before. When we, enrolled last fall for our junior year, our class roll had dropped still lower-this time to twenty-two. Miss Harney and Mr. Stegemann have very ably served us as advisers. The class officers are Charles Lehto, president? Verna Maunu, vice-president: and Gordon Peterson, secretary-treasurer. The annual junior class play, the Chintz Cottage, under the direction of Miss Kommes and Miss Seglem, was a great success. As the annual goes to press, we are anticipating good times at the junior-senior banquet and other spring activities. In spite of the fact that our class has decreased in number, our class parties, high school mixers, and various other activities have been very successful. The students who have joined, our ranks during these years are Bertha Ropponen, Jean Endsley, James Riback, and Ralph Peterson. And thus, this class of 1939, is looking forward to next fall, when we shall come back as full-fledged, and so-called dignified seniors to complete our high school days, and next spring to be graduated and to carry away with us pleasant memories of good old Lincoln High. A '1 5. x 4, Extra-Curricular Activities and Special Departments The following pages of activity pictures show the many phases of school life enjoyed by the students of Thomson High beyond the required subjects such as English and history. The school is fortunate in having four special de- partments-commercial, home training, agriculture, and industrial training. These departments where the en- rolled students spend sixty minutes per day are used for regular class work. In addition to the work granted in the above fields, students may participate in numerous extra-curricular activities which give them excellent opportunity to de- velop particular individual interests. Our extra-curricular activities consist of 4-H Club, F.F.A., basketball, track, band, orchestra, glee club, photography, dramatics, G.A.A., the school paper, and library work. Through participation in one or more of these activities, students learn leadership, cooperation, and wise use of leisure time. They gain in general a better- rounded education, making them able to live a fuller, richer life. ifgkssii 2 S .. 1 Y 3 5 , Q K - 5' ,s .1 fag. Q ' vegas '- X , S bv l u.i1 Riuu- Marian lixko. Girls' Glee Club Opening a channel for those interested in vocal music, the girls' glee club was reorganized in l936, under the leadership of Mr. Isaac Esko. with twenty members enrolled. These young singers made their first appearance at the annual Washington School Christmas Program, Here they were received with stimulating applause. They also took part in the annual Music Festival at Moose Lake where they received highly favorable comment from the judges. In addition they con- tributed to the baccalaureate and commencement services. Last fall the glee club boasted a larger enrollment when several additional senior high girls joined its ranks. The group elected Roselle Juntunen as president, and Ruth Olson as secretary-treasurer. Appear- ing again at the Christmas Program, their line harmony and intonation gained for them even more enthusiastic praise and comment than a year ago. They sang several numbers at the Delaware Tercentenary Cele- bration in March. The glee club is at work on the operetta, A'Tea House of Sing Lo, as the LOG goes to press. They also plan to take part in the Music Festival and the baccalaureate and commencement services this spring. lilrsf Row: Jennie llrlberg, Mabel Esko, Evelyn Lovestrand, Edna Huima. Band The high school band. organized six years ago under Mr. L. B. Olson. has gained wide recognition, due to the cooperation of the leader. the band members, and the parents. The band has opened a field of music in the community, giving students an opportunity to test their musical ability. Playing in the band gives pupils leisure work and gives them an opportunity to meet people. The group is fortunate to have a new acoustically-treated music room. and school-supplied instruments, music, and transportation. This organization has played a number of outside engagements. among them, the State Fair Music Contest, the Chicago Bears-College All-Stars Footgall game, the Battle of Bands, the regional basketball tournament in Hibbing-1937, County Music Festival. Duluth Dairy Judging Parade, county and local fairs, and other events. The band has also played for the home basketball games, The officers of the band are: president, Raymond Johnson: sec- retary-treasurer, Bertha Ropponen: librarian, Clarence Carlson: and property manager.
