The entire math department improved with the integration of more advanced concepts of modern math as outlined by Mr. DeVinney and Mr. Ken Shaffer. Mr. DeVinney was awarded an NDEA grant to Case Institute, and Mr. Shaffer at- tended the meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Cincinnati. Since civil strife was a pre- valent part of the American history course, juniors used cause and effect reasoning in their study of the war between the states. In Civics classes, mock elections were held in conjunction with their study of Pennsylvania politics. The world history classes correlated the accomplishments of past leaders with today's new faces in politicsg these leaders were major topics in their study of ancient civilizations and the world wars. Finally, men- tal health, behavior patterns, and environ- mental adaptations were the main concerns of the psychology and sociology classes. In boys' gym classes indi- vidual coordination was developed through wrestling and gymnastics while team sports, such as basketball and cageball, emphasized team cooperation. Girls participated in phys- ical fitness testing programs and then im- proved their weak skills with exercises, vol- leyball, kickball, and dancing. Supplementing the physical program, the health classes studied the body and its function, and many students elected an advance course in physi- ology and anatomy.
