l social sciences stimulate a political interest among students Since the Home Economics Department emphasized the skills that prepared girls to be successful homemakers, many students, both male and female, elected either home living, foods, or sewing. Throughout the cur- riculum, the techniques of home furnishings, the preparation of meals, and the funda- mentals of dressmaking were taught. auto shop students of Boys who were interested in engineer- ing, woodworking, metal working, or auto- mobiles enrolled in one of the various courses in the industrial arts department. Future engineers and draftsmen improved their skills in the mechanical drawing classes, and many entered their blueprints in contests. The auto shop came into its own this year when fifteen senior boys took an active interest in cars. Many teach- ers and used-car dealers donated their cars for repair by these boys, and field trips were taken to automobile factories in Michigan and Ohio. by staging mock campaigns. The social sciences gave every student a well-rounded program in the study of the basic humanities. Since civil strife was a pre- valent part of the American history course, juniors used cause and effect reasoning in their study of the war between the states. In Civics classes, mock elections were held in conjunction with their study of Pennsylvania politics. The world history classes correlated the accomplishments of past leaders with today's new faces in politicsg these leaders were major topics in their study of ancient civilizations and the world wars. Finally, men- tal health, behavior patterns, and environ- mental adaptations were the main concerns of the psychology and sociology classes.
