auto shop students of Boys who were interested in engineer- ing, woodworking, metal working, or auto- mobiles enrolled in one of the various courses in the industrial arts department. Future engineers and draftsmen improved their skills in the mechanical drawing classes, and many entered their blueprints in contests. The auto shop came into its own this year when fifteen senior boys took an active interest in cars. Many teach- ers and used-car dealers donated their cars for repair by these boys, and field trips were taken to automobile factories in Michigan and Ohio. sophomores elect physics in accelerated science program Paul Gehm Donald Hairhoger Norma Hawke Laboratory work in the Science Depart- ment helped students associate theory with practical experience in biology, physics, and chemistry. Sophomores who participated ln the accelerated science program were per- mitted to elect physics for the first time this year. Practical science and 'practical chemis- try were offered to senior high students who had completed ninth grade physical science, but these courses included no laboratory ex- perimentation. A vacancy in the Science de- partment which will be difficult to'fill was created by the retirement of Mr. Howard Gills who taught chemistry here for 38 years. l social sciences stimulate a political interest among students Since the Home Economics Department emphasized the skills that prepared girls to be successful homemakers, many students, both male and female, elected either home living, foods, or sewing. Throughout the cur- riculum, the techniques of home furnishings, the preparation of meals, and the funda- mentals of dressmaking were taught. The ex- pansion of this department has thus devel- oped the domestic skills of Lincoln students. Mr. Spellman drives for a hook shot against the Diplo- FTISYS.
