sophomores elect physics in accelerated science program Paul Gehm Donald Hairhoger Norma Hawke Laboratory work in the Science Depart- ment helped students associate theory with practical experience in biology, physics, and chemistry. Sophomores who participated ln the accelerated science program were per- mitted to elect physics for the first time this year. Practical science and 'practical chemis- try were offered to senior high students who had completed ninth grade physical science, but these courses included no laboratory ex- perimentation. A vacancy in the Science de- partment which will be difficult to'fill was created by the retirement of Mr. Howard Gills who taught chemistry here for 38 years. As early as seventh grade, Miss Baringer and Mr. Spellman helped students in the preparation of schedules and courses of study. While Mr. Latimer scheduled sopho- mores and prepared them for their first year in Senior High, Miss Craig assisted juniors and seniors. Each year, tests were administered to measure each student's aptitudes, and they were then offered in- formation and interviewed by representa- tives of the armed forces, trade schools, and colleges. Because of the efforts of this department, Lincoln students were well informed about the fields they wished to pursue. William Croissant Carole Dainton Elinore Davis Phyllis DeMark P. auto shop students of Boys who were interested in engineer- ing, woodworking, metal working, or auto- mobiles enrolled in one of the various courses in the industrial arts department. Future engineers and draftsmen improved their skills in the mechanical drawing classes, and many entered their blueprints in contests. The auto shop came into its own this year when fifteen senior boys took an active interest in cars. Many teach- ers and used-car dealers donated their cars for repair by these boys, and field trips were taken to automobile factories in Michigan and Ohio. This program supple- mented the already successful wood and metal shop classes. er services to community car owners George Jinar Francis Keller Patricia Keller John King Mary Kuben Duane Kirklin Lorraine Kirkpatrick Mary Koszela Marian Lanirz William Latimer Curtis Latshaw 25
