The position of class sponsor has been capably filled by Laurence Iflinner. They have ethciently handled their two inain activities which are the junior Class Play and the Senior Prom. They have been above par in scholastic ratings as well as in extra-curricular activities. Now it is nearly time for them to assume the initiative as seniors of Lincoln High School. During their nine months reign as chief supervisors it will be their duty to set a good example for future leaders. We feel sure that they will perform their obligation as proliciently as they possibly can. 'W nm e- 2 FUUUQQQ 11 0'-U MY 1 W' - QS!! .., I K ' 3 'gt . I 'xy 'Q G 5 5 9 . .- A A .1 Q. FR -- lass of I' 7 New Univ: ull -- null unvml Un September 3, three hundred and seventy-two ambitious freshmen entered the portals of Lincoln High School. They immedi- ately plunged into work: civics, general science, English, domestic and industrial arts, gym, and mathematics. Some were be- wildered and excited at lirst, but after the first few days they took their place in the daily pattern beside the senior high. 'lihese freshmen of 1948 have shown through junior high football and basketball good sportsmanship throughout the year. IQKHVI' I IQRUVP ll Nlany are to be found in the other various extra-curricular activities: the school choirs, the Y-Teens, the junior Dramatic Club and the Band. This class has acquired the fundamentals necessary for becoming one of the well educated classes of Lincoln High School. This condition is well illustrated by the fact that approximately 60 students made the honor roll. We as upperclassmen have to admit and are proud to admit that they have done a good job in their freshman year. -bg -. 'I . . 1 , 4 Q- 1 1 . , ,.Q, ,, E ' Q , l Qgfffl' r 5 . Music, INSTRUMENTAL Glowing Results of Talent and Tail Under the baton of the genial Mr. XYeinstein, our band has been busy weaving the appropriate musical background for instrumental harmony in our various school functions from early football season to commencement day. Everything from boogie- woogie to symphony made their repertoire a vast one. Resplendent in maroon and gray they added color and enthusiasm to our football games and parades. Fifteen of our band members were privileged to participate in the District Band at :Xmbridge and in the .-XII State Band, held here in February. Climaxing the activities was the annual spring concert which was enthusiastically applauded by all who attended. lYe are proud of our Band: and we feel that it is equal to, if not better than any other high school band we know. BASKETBALL, Junior l-ligh XVith one of the poorest seasons recorded, SCORES the Little Wolverines, coached by Laird McCanna, were only able to cope one victory for themselves this season. Starting out their 1947-1948 cage season successfully, the Little Vlfolverines defeated Shenango by the score of 24-20. The rest of the season meant defeat for the Wolverines. Because of better, all around teams the Ellwood cagers were unable to offer stiff competition as the scores indicate. Later in the season Coach McCanna replaced the first-string ninth graders by the seventh and eighth graders in the last live or six contests. These boys gained valuable experience, and some of them may develop into star performers. Certainly much can be expected of Tammaro, Smilek, Conrad, Nocera, Kirkley, Perry and Furillo. Ellwood .... Washington BASKETBALL, VARSITY The Ellwood City Wolverines, with coaches 'fTed Vllallace and Howard Gills, opened their 1947-48 basketball season by defeating Union Township in a one-sided game. They were very successful in their pre-league battles, winning 7 out of the 8 games scheduled. The VVolverines opened' the WPIAL Championship race in a thriller with Sharon- Beat Sharon! That's what they wanted to do, and that's exactly what they did. The VVolverines suffered their first defeat at the hands of Farrell in a wild but unexciting game. Farrell took the lead from the first whistle and easily maintained it throughout the game. Sparked by Mattocks with 18 points, the Vllolverines copped their second Section 3 victory by defeating Ambridge. Gregg gave his best performance of the season in this game showing especially well his control of rebounds. The next game at Beaver Falls was lost because of a big first-quarter lead. Bischoff 72 if A lense moment in the Sharon Game. was high scorer for the Tigers while Vlfatterson and Popescu played bang-up games for Ellwood. Aliquippa defeated Ellwood by the score of 54 to 42 and ruined the XVolverines' home record. By this game, the Indians took sole possession of Hrst place for the first-half of the season. The Lawrence County arch rivals met at New Castle to sec the Red Hurricanes walk away with a victory over l-lllwood. The VVolverines successfully held their own until the final quarter when New Castle copped 26 points to only 4 for the locals. In opening the second half of their season the XVolverines were in high hopes of repeating their earlier victory over Sharon, but they returned home on the short end of the score. The second encounter with Farrell was marked by the brilliant scoring of 18 points by Hammond. Captain O'Hara pacedmthe locals with 12. noise, sweat, and tears Ambridge shaded Ellwood in their return engagement in a battle which was decided in the last four seconds. XVatterson and O'Hara sparked Ellwood with 14 and 15 points respectively. The second-half battle with Beaver Falls proved to be much closer than the previous one, but still both their offensive and defensive play proved too much for the VVallace coached lads. Aliquippa's fast-stepping passers clinched the Section 3 title by a second victory over the XVolverines. The Indians tallied 15 or more points in each canto A hard-lighting Ellwoocl quint ended its 1947-48 season on the losing side of a hot tussle with New Castle. The late Wolverine drive fell only 8 points shy of victory The Blue and VVhite wound up with a season's record of 9 victories and 11 defeats Of these, 2 wins and 10 setbacks came in league contests. T- ' ...L- FOOTBALL, JUNIOR I-IIGI-I From Kickoff to Gun The 1947 junior High football season opened with a terrific problem facing Coach Charles R. VVallace. Only one letterman, Frank XYolfe, a huge tackle, was returning from the '46 squad. Lack of experience naturally hindered the team as they met defeat in their tirst game at the hands of Ben Franklin of New Castle 6-0. George Washington, Meadville and Beaver Falls then fell before the Junior XVolves, the Beaver Falls game being the annual Charles Follette memorial game. Frank XVolfe, captain, paced the Ellwood line while Marshall and Hillman performed ably in the backfield. Lou Conti served both as an end and as a back during the season playing both positions well. Ellwood's season ended with an over-all record of three victories and a single defeat. This success can be attributed not only to capable coaching but also to the fighting spirit of the comparatively green team. During the year, Coach VVallace was ably assisted by Bill Young.
