The memories of these people make the entertainment world what it is today. On August 16, 1977 the father of rock 'n roll died of heart failure in his home city, Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis Presley, also known as Elvis the Pelvis because of the sexy undulating body motion that typified his style, became a star in 1956 when his first string of hits Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel, Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes, and Love Me Tender - reached the top of the charts and the first of his twenty-eight motion pictures, LOVE ME TENDER, was released. Freddie Prinze of CHICO AND THE MAN committed suicide on January 28, 1977. He was a good actor and many people enoyed being entertained by him. It was a mysterious t.ragedy that shocked everyone On Christmas Day, 1977, Charlie Chaplin died at the age of 88 at his home in Switzerland. He was first introduced to America as a vaudville clown in 1910. Bing Crosby thrilled audiences of all ages with his great talent not only in singing but also in acting. He made many famous movies in his day, such as - WHITE CHRISTMAS, HOLIDAY INN, GOING MY WAY, not to forget his many road shows. Bing Crosby died as he had lived, a true and faithful son of the church int.o which he was born, a loving husband and father, a sportsman among sportsmen, and a patriotic American. and Went on to a bigger and better place. 54 W ,, L- I . Vice President Gerald Ford then took over for Nixon. Mr. Ford held this position for the rest of' the termg then President Carter was voted in. Henry Kissinger was an important political figure in the 70's also. He had a big part in keeping peace. As the decade closes Vance has taken over the position as Secretary of State. In the world of sports, Muhammad Ali has been the main man. The world heavy-weight champ has had a couple of tough years. Leon Spinks came into the picture and took the title away from Ali and lost it back to Ali all within a matter of six months. It was the shortest time anyone held the title. The 1972 Olympics created a couple oi' world-wide superstars competing for the big one, the gold medal. Mark Spitz, who was one of them, managed to come home with seven golds in the swimming competition. Little Olga Korhut stole many hearts as she showed her charms in the gymnastic events. The 1976 Decathlon winner was Bruce Jenner, which made him The World's Greatest Athlete. in 4 Sf 158.63-vi g P3 8 2 ,nw sex 1 . , T ' :Q I5 'ggi ..:A- V+ , 1 , 5 ig., ,.aY , . The decade of the 70's saw no great musical changes, but did see a number of innovations. In the early 70's Beatles' fans mourned the news of their breakup. The music of the mid-70's was a mixture of Hard Rock and Pop Rock, with popular groups being the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, the Osmonds and teenage idols like Donny Osmond and David Cassidy. Hard Rock continued to develop with other groups like Boston, the Eagles, and Kansas But a new and completely different kind of music was also emerging-DISCO. Groups like the Commodores, Donna Summer and the Bee Gees contributed to much of the success of disco music. Morever the movie SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER was the major cause of this disco fever. This movie also contributed to the popularity of the star and idol John Travolta. He is just one of the stars to pop out of the late 70's. Sylvester Stallone melted his viewers in his performance as Rocky. Henry Winkler, alias Fonzie, stole the hearts of many in his role in HAPPY DAYS. Farrah Fawcett became an everyday household word through her role in CHARLIE'S ANGELS. Still lives on f S C91 gnnnlllk 6 N. Eleven team members were sophomoresg four were girls and five were boys. Cross Country members practiced everyday running over 3 miles each time out. They had meets every Thursday at the South High Stadium. There were two larger meets: The Denver Public High Scbool Athletic League Invitational and the M ,.,t,.. t sm it qgqut y?WiiNl Q if Broomfield Invitational. The runners for Lincoln used these meets as practice to get ready for the District Meet. Lincoln runners tried hard at all their meets, losing a close one to Thomas Jefferson. Next year's team should be a stronger team with twelve returning members and the experience they lacked this year. ygpg , I' - lf- 'suffer' of 31 -ml! The Tennis Team lost two close matches, one against North and the other against South. Both scores were 3-4 and all matches were played well. Coach Mansfield said she really enjoyed coaching the boys' team and will be looking forward to next year. The team will have 7 returning lettermen plus any new members. Coach Warren Blair suggested that the reason for all the losses was the lack of experience among most of the players. As the season progressed, scores improved and Blair looked optimistically towards next year's team. The team had inter-squad playoffs each week to determine eight members who would play in the next match. Six of the eight played and the other two were alternates. Seniors with the best scores for 18 holes were team captains Gregg Girtin 1781, Joe Distefano 1805 and Jim Dufficy 1901. Outstanding juniors and sophomores were Lorenzo Herrera 1841, Bob Case 1901, Trent Pierce 1901, Roland Hilgers 1901, and Alan Freyta 1845. Last August, being no exception, 33 gentlemen were found on the Lincoln football field diligently running and rerunning plays in an effort to get ready for the upcoming season. Coaches Otto Schroeder and Mel Hornecker weren't exactly feeling secure as they viewed their troops. They saw only two returning starters and six returning lettermen. However, this inexperienced team wasn't without talent or potential. The already proven talent came from fullback Tom Peterson, tackle Andy McPhie, and safety Phil Capra. The main ingredient that was lacking was the leadership that it takes for a winning team. Coach Schroeder felt that it would surface as the season went on from people like Steve Mayden and Brent Howell. Unfortunately, injuries also plagued the Lancers this year as Pat Smaldone and Steve Sedbrook were lost due to knee injuries. Lincoln also had the distinction of being the first team ever to play a night game at the All City Stadium at South High School which they lost to Bear Creek 22-12. The season followed in much the same manner with only a few bright spots such as the win over Greeley West 27-21. Coach Schroeder looks forward to next year with a lot of depth and experience in Mike Billinger, John Cordova, Rob Prudhomme, Randy Poindexter, and Greg Hamilton. At any rate, Schroeder and Hornecker can start all over again next year with a brand new decade and, hopefully, brand new luck. This year's team was very young and was made up of mostly juniors and sophomores along with a few experienced seniors. The Lancers lost tough games to Manual and Kennedy but are sure to be a contender in the district playoffs which may lead them into the state tournament. This year's team got excellent play from senior Dean Tygrett, junior Mike Roberts, and sophomores Rick Berns and Mike Montgomery. Senior Greg Mullen also provided strong defensive support. The Junior Varsity also had a very good team. They were undefeated in league play and are sure to make the Lancer Varsity team powerful in the coming years. Mountain Club reaches new peaks Mountain Club is made up of people who love the beauty of the outdoors and want to keep it that way. The Mountain Club is for fun, but it also wants people to realize the importance of the mountains. The club helped the forest service build trails for hikers and helped keep the mountains clean for everyone to enjoy. The club goes all over the Rockies to go hiking. They have gone to such places as Royal Arch near Boulder and Centennial Cone which is close to Central City. If you don't like any of these places you might like to try Gem Lake near Estes Park, or maybe you would like to go hiking on Goose Creek above Pine. If it is snow the members like, the club goes cross-country skiing. For those who can't ski, there is snowshoeing or maybe snow tubing. Once in awhile a few members of the club even go overnight camping and meet the rest of the club the next day on the trail. A few other things the Mountain Club has come up with are rafting, fishing, horseback riding and ice skating. The students who were in charge of all these activities were Brenda Williamson, pres.g Rena Clem, vice pres.g Sandi Clem, secretary, and Susan Blakely, treasurer. The team played a round-robin schedule which means they played each league team twice. The first eight games were divided into three mini-tournaments and the team with the most wins in each tournament won a trophy. Lincoln won the most games during each tournament and received all three coveted trophies. The girls' final season record was 14 wins and 2 losses, both to Kennedy. The team lacked confidence and was very inexperienced. Only a few men had the experience to play quality ball in high school. Coach Hessel attributed this to an absence of basketball programs at the junior high level. He felt the much needed play in the first round would help develop the V , i'iQ team's play during the second round. At the time of this writing the squad needed more than experience. l They were getting blown out of the gymnasium, being outscored by over 20 points in many of their games. Despite a few lettermen electing not to return this year, the Lancers had a very good season and possessed the enthusiasm of true champions. The team will be losing 5 varsity wrestlers, but Coach Klune feels the J.V. program, which many schools can't support, will help develop wrestlers to fill the vacant spots. This system will continue to make Lincoln's wrestling program one of Denver's best. Wrestlers having a fine season at the time of this writing were Wes Gasner Q13-OJ, Mike Hines C9-U, Brad Brown Q10-31, Steve Mayden C9-3-QD, Alan Ingraham Q9-51, Steve Willmarth C8-51, and Vance Urioste 45-15. The Sophomore Choir is available to all sophomores who feel they would like to further their musical education and participate in a large singing group at Lincoln. The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble combined to make up the football and marching band. The Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble are a select group of musicians. These two groups perform extensively at festivals and elementary, junior and senior high schools in the Denver area. Many of the top players also participated in a musical theatre orchestra to perform the Broadway musical Showboat. In addition to the above school bands and orchestras, Lincoln students auditioned for All State Band and Orchestra, and City Wide Band, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble. This year the City Wide Band was selected to perform at the regional convention of the Music Educators National Conference at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs on Saturday, Feb. 3, 1979. ROTC on the move! r The Reserve Officers Training Corps here at . Lincoln has had a very good reputation and this ag year's squad was no exception. Kunsmiller's ROTC, ii. Q which is a satellite of Linc0ln's, has also done very well again this year. ROTC is an organization which develops a knowledge of basic military skills in young men and women. It gives them a chance to compete with good sportsmanship and honor and also brings out qualities such as leadership and self-reliance. The activities that Lincoln's ROTC were involved in were rifle matches which were held weekly on Wednesday for the girls and Thursday for the boys, drill meets, and the state meet which was held in March. The color guard performed at Nugget games and sold popcorn to raise funds. Lincoln's ROTC hosted the Brigade Christmas Jam, which was a very big success. Along with all the activities ROTC was involved in, each member always strived to make their school and community the best yet as this decade came to an end' SA1 Colonel Ramsey Executive Officer Michael Ayala I.P.O. Although fund raising was a problem, the class did sell Lancer buttons, T-shirts, and candy during school. The class of '80 did sponsor a Disco Dance in November. President Karen Sauceda worked.hard to build the Junior Class to be one of the finest ever to come out of Lincoln. Others helping in the effort were Toni Schermerhorn, vice-presidentg Jenny Janz, secretaryg Lisa Leverett, treasurerg and about 20 other juniors. Together they made the class of '80 the best of all. The team, consisting ot' eleven sophomores and two juniors, showed signs oi' inexperience in their first few outings but should improve in time. What the team needs most is a leader, someone who can take control on the field, said coach .lack Girtin. That lack of leadership was evident in the team's heartbreaking loss to rival Kennedy, 8-7. Coach Girtin is counting on Eric Berghorn, Jerry Dowling, and Paul Economakos to provide this missing ingredient. The Student Senate encourages school participation and promotes school spirit. This year they tried new techniques to get people involved with the school and used some of the old ones, too. The Student Senate organized such things as the Presidents' Roundtable where the presidents of all the clubs got together and discussed the activities that they have planned. Operation Cheer, in which they gave a Christmas party to children who ordinarily wouldn't have had one and the rewriting of the school constitution, bringing it up to date, were just a couple of things that they did. A few things that were done to raise money for the betterment of the school were having a candy sale and selling Gold C. Books. They also raised money to benefit the Kidney Foundation by having a Denver-Bronco-football and a kidney-bean contest. The sport didn't begin to boom until the invention of the automatic pin-spotter. Abraham Lincoln High School's Bowling club is helping the sport grow with its many new members. The club meets every Wednesday at Crown Lanes. Tournaments are held with the bowling clubs from Thomas Jefferson, John F. Kennedy, West, and other high schools throughout the year. After the Lancers and the Commanders had two tournaments, the score was one win for Lincoln and one for Kennedy. The two teams have set up one more tournament to break the tie. Awards are given to the bowlers at an annual banquet near the end of the year. Lincoln's Bowling Club has a new sponsor, Mr. Lucero, who has given the club many new ideas. Don't I have a nice form? Watch out pins, here I come! Lincoln bridge builders crack up It was a shattering experience for all involved. That's the best way to describe the Bridge Building Contest held during the week of January 15-19. The participants, students of Mr. Einarsen's and Mr. Weimar's physics classes, designed their bridges to withstand the most weight. Their efficiency was decided by dividing the amount of weight the bridge held by the weight of the bridge itself. There were many successful entries and some that were not so successful. The three best bridge builders traveled to state competition held in February. They were Linda Dunmire, third place winner, who had a bridge ratio of 2684 poundsg Teresa Zornes, who had a bridge ratio of 2816 poundsg and Hoa Vu, whose first place bridge held 2850 pounds before shattering. There were 84 entries competing in this year's event. Mr. Einarsen was also Lincoln's sponsor in the contest. It all begins with the color deadline in early November, when all color photographs and copy must be in as well as the style sheet and cover and end-sheet design. In December comes the BIG ONE: the album deadline, 90-some pages of student pictures along with pictures of outstanding seniors. This year on December 18, 19, and 20, while the rest of the student body were on Christmas break, YEARBOOK STAFF was in room 224 working on this deadline. By Christmas, half of the book was in. Then came January and February and the two club deadlines. Traumatic is the word for it. As usual, everything that could go wrong, did. But the notable among them were the two editors: Laura Larrabee and Jackee Chavez. Senior staffers were Phil Capra, Cindy Charbonneau, Rose Costello, Lori Dreisbach, Gregg Girtin, Mary Greenwald, Debbie Hjelm, Anne Jones, Kerri Klippel, Greg Mullen, Mary Nieman, aand Stefanie Taylor. Junior staffers were Sara Abshire, Robin Cummings, Gwen Eichman, Cindy Forington, Janet Graige, Greg Hamilton, Patty Herrick, Steve Sedbrook, and Cindy Stanley. Photographers were John Townley, Gene Molloy, Bryan Wamberg, Chris Woolen, Ken Classen, Lori Lindbloom, and Kathy Dow. The staff sponsor was Mr. Valentine and the photography sponsor was Mr. Jones. staff redouhled their effort, and by April the book was in. All that was left was to celebrate and pray the book would be well received and the budget met. The year 1978-79 produced not only a good yearbook but also a splendid group of staffers. Most he fl wt XS The Class of '79 sure is fine The Senior Class Council is made up of young men and women who want to make sure that their class is the best to ever come out of Lincoln High School. They met every Tuesday morning at 7:00 so they could get ready for their many accomplishments they created throughout the year. The Class Council was responsible for a great many things through the year, but their two main concerns were the senior prom and graduation. The Senior Class Council went through a lot of work and arrangements for their graduation. They made it possible for the 1979 class to be the first class from Abraham Lincoln High School to graduate at Red Rocks Ampitheater. They also arranged for the prom to be held at the Brown Palace. All this required money. A few ways they raised money for this were having a candy sale, a T-shirt sale and having a Bronco football contest. The students who were in charge of all these accomplishments were Betty Burns, presidentg Marcia Clute, vice presidentg Tracy Philpot, secretaryg Barry Hawkins, treasurerg and sixty other students who were involved in the Senior Class Council. The sponsor for the 1979 class was Mr. Ortez who spent much of his time to create the finest class of all. ,-. .1 ,fy n Q X-4-S' X W f X f---'sf-I ' xy-,.....-fa' '-' -,,4--1-1 ,Q-1 Mr. Ortez, sponsor.
