Despite a slow start, President Ford caught up to jimmy Carter in the polls prior to election time. The race was running even between two dedicated and sincere men. Both men made errors of equal weight to the point where political predictions said the last one to fumble would be the loser. Gerald Ford made such bloopers as saying Poland and Yugoslavia were not under Soviet domination and, during his political campaigning, forgot what city he was in. On the other hand, jimmy Carter held an interview with Playboy Magazine stating he had lusted after women many times in his heart and was accused of waffling on the issues. Many people liked him but couldn't tell where he was at. Apathy among the electorate was evident. Some experts predicted that less than 500f0 of the voters would turn out on election day. Major issues were unemployment, taxes, government bureaucracy, and the scandalous dishonesty of past government officials. Both candidates felt they were the answer to America's problems and for the second time in history, two candidates confronted each other face to face before the nation in an attempt to sell themselves and their ideas to the American people. Many Americans said Ho-Hum to the debates and switched to the World Series I Q Cinncinati Big Red Machine found the New York Yankees finger-lickin' good. At last National League Hockey had come to Denver. F S Ng Not to be outdone, The National Basketball Association expanded to include a few v , . . . . . teams from the now defunct American Basketball Association. CMay it rest in peace.l Fans in ABA cities now looked forward to seeing such greats as Kareem Abdul jabar, Bill Cowens, john Havlicek, and Pistol Pete Marivich along with our own David Thompson, Dan The Horse lssel, and Marvin Webster. Speaking of Halloween, The World Football League died and many of its ghosts could now be seen wearing National Football League uniforms. The NFL added two teams, Tampa Bay and Seattle. At the latest writing, Tampa Bay was threatening to set an NFL record of 0 and 14 while some of the old football dynasties seemed to be crumbling. The Pittsburgh Steelers were getting rusty, the Miami Dolphins were drowning, and even the mighty Oakland Raider's massive ship seemed to be sinking. Other teams, however, were coming on strong, such as the New England Patriots who seemed to be fighting their own NFL revolution.
