OROC And Boskone ew This Year NOROC blasted off settling into an orbit of success. Using rockets of their own design and the West Syl- van playfield as their launching pad, they sent rockets and payloads whose complexities rivaled those of Apollo 10 into space. The club also had their own paper which informed people of launching dates and other notes of interest. In Boskone's first year, the science discussion-club proved to be both educational and interesting. Mr. Flenniken and Matt Clark, advisor and president respectively, led the club in talks concerning life on other worlds, U.F.O.'s, interstellar flight, and D.N.A. They also have their own science-fiction library. tt SE. Records list a total of 74 national merit finalists in- cluding 11 scholarship winners, one presidential scholar, four Woodrow Wilson fellowships, and four Rhodes schol- arships. In addition, many Lincoln graduates have been elected to Phi Beta Kappa through the years. l xk-B.. .. all- F L. M M2923 wssl' W4 W? What is a Lincoln teacher in 1969? A paper-grader? An old crab? A busy-work genius? Or maybe a first-rate counselor A cerebral stimulus An empathetic listener Sometimes even a friend Caring enough to be world-aware To study, to travel In the pursuit of excellence Caring enough to become involved In the problems of the black youth Or the disadvantaged child Or the mixed-up kid. These pages show Lincoln's teachers Not posing but striving. V Students are their first concern. Not the wayward bus, but a field trip to the Albina community RM? 23 The Most Promising Force Is Reason Though reason's victories are partial, and its strength always tentative, it is the most attractive, the most promising force we have. In this truly troubled time in our nation's history, of greatest portent to our future is not the social and economic problems which demand solution, for we shall be able to solve these if we have the patience and the will. Rather, of greatest portent is the increasing number of people who in solving these problems, are ready to abandon not only humane and civilized means, but the very processes of democracy itself. Those who bully professors, take over buildings, shout speakers down, or burn cities to get what they want are, in fact, creating a problem more serious than any they are trying to solve. And what shall it profit us, if, no matter how noble our motives, how sincere our convictions, how ar- duous our efforts as we seek to right social ills, we destroy the very fabric of society itself. It is my hope you each will join and defend, even with your life, the forces of democracy and reason in which lie our only salvation.
