Aterrific cast of stars and supporters added to the insane nonsense that was dominant throughout the play. The team under the direction of Mr, john Hall e s tabl i s he d a record of 1085 points for its three appearances including 430 points in the final game. At mid-year, no other school had scored as many points in any game as Lincoln did in its poorest performance. As a result of the three victor ie s, Lincoln's li- brary received the Wo r l d Book Science Year, the World Book D i c t i ona r y, the World Book Ye a rb o o k and the World Book Encyclopedia. c vw ga :rf Mr Orch Under the supervision of Mr. Favrell Pratt and drum major senior Gene Leo, the Pep Band and Orchestra performed at assemblies and var- ious athletic events. I Wa-L Assemblies Though fewer in number than last year, the assemblies at L inc oln this year ranged from the quietness and solemnity of the Lincoln Day commemoration to the fun and excitement of the Popcycles' kick-off. Perhaps the traditional May Fete and AFS assemblies were among the best liked. However, class play previews, mu- sical department performances, Girl's League, ALM, and Pep assemblies also prove d to be enjoyable to Lincoln students. During the first pep assembly, Laurie Steed takes it easy. 1 Mr. jacob Avshalomov, director of the junior Symphony, thanks the audience for their warm applause following Lincoln concert. Senior guard jim Montagna headed the list of Cardinal performers who earne d notice in City and State football polls. jim, who was voted the 1967 MVP award by his teammates, won All-City honor s in both newspapers. He was also nominated to the All-State First team and was a candidate for the annual Shriners Football game. Senior fullback Wayne Karney won third team honors as did junior halfback john Mays. Gaining Honorable Mention in the city poll were seniors Bill Tatum and Zachary Patterson and sophomores Mike Schuman and Pat Fagen. The 1966 City Cha mp s, Lincoln Cardi- nals, failed to live up to 1967 expectations. Injuries were a major factor in the Birds dis- appointing s e a s o n . Playing without their star performers week after week, the Cards' chances faded into oblivion, though their spirit and effort held strong. In their fir st two non- counting outings, they lost by na r r ow decisions to Grant and a week later, in a hea rt -breaker, to Franklin. After breezing past Roosevelt, in their opening division game, the Cards, the following week, lost a thriller to Wilson. Entering the Madison Conte st with a disheartening 1 win and 3 loss record, the Axe-swingers again came out on the short end of the s t i c k. Continuing the dismal season, Lincoln then lost to the fledgling jack- son Raiders in agame marked by several mis- understandings. The Cards nearly upset the highly rated Demos of jefferson. Matchedin the next encounter with Washington in a playoff for the booby prize, the consistent Cards lost again in their final game, ending the season with a record of 1 win and 7 losses. For the first time in ten years Portland ln- terscholastic League teams clashed during the Football Jamboree under the lights of Portland Civic Stadium. This time the league was divided for the sea s on into Red and Green divisions. Roosevelt, ja c k s o n, jefferson, Madison, and Wilson joined Lincoln in the Red division, with Grant, Franklin, Marshall, Washington, Ben- son, and Cleveland forming the Green division, At the Jamboree, each team played one quarter in a c o m pe t it i on between the two divisions. Lincoln held Washington to a scoreless tie in its turn, as the Red defeated the Green by an ac- cumulated score of 49 to 40. 3 1 Fall Sports C w +--rf 13' Huw Wg.. 'ar-93 S.. ...0' arf'-' '.' Small Turnout Plagues Rookie Trotters With a small turnout and few experienced runners, the cross-country squad faced a dis- maying prospect last fall. Thus their low po- sition at the end of the season came as no sur- prise to Coach Tony Lindstrom, closing out a career of over 40 years, or to the neophyte team. Hope for futu re years may be found in the performance of team leader, Dave Wienecke, and the promising work of junior Dave Scharf, and freshman Ken Carlson. In five meets, with four team s competing in each, the Cardinals placed third in three meets and fourth in two. In the city me e t, the R edbird squad placed eighth out of twelve teams entered. In the state meet, Lincoln's only entrant, Dave Wienecke, placed fifteenth out of a field of 180 to 200 boys competing. Vital Role Around Lincoln Knowing the ropes - literally - is just one of the many aspects of a stage crew member's job. He must know which ropes to pull to open and close various curtains and to elevate or lower scrims and scenery. He must also mas- ter operation of the complex stage lighting panel, know how to persuade a balky micro- phone to work, be able to follow cues and performers with the balcony spots, and set a stage c o m p le te ly according to instructions. Crew chief David Delk, assisted by senior David Walker and Freshmen David Haight, john Andrews, Richard Monger, and Ray Ross, has been re spons ible for all operations on the Lincoln stage this year. Advisor is Mr. Les Wood. David Haight, john Andrews learned the ropes this year as fledgling members of the stage crew. Under the leadership of Pep Club president Marilyn Larkins, the Pep Club strives to build spirit and enthusiasm at games for Lincoln's football and basketball teams. Guided by Advi- sor Miss Susan Waters, Pep Club m e m b e r s also managed the refreshment stands, Armed with undying enthusiasm and white pom pons the Pep Club formed the nucleus of the cheering section at every game. Parent-Teacher Association and Dads' Club Lend Helping Hand to Many Lincoln Activities Few students are fully aware of the extent of the contributions the two parents' organiza- tions, the Parent-Teachers Association and the Dads' Club, make to the success and enjoyment of the school year. Many interested parents devote long hours to planning, preparation, and execution of a wide variety of projects. Seniors enjoying themselves at the Senior Breakfast this spring were guests of the Parent-Association. Breakfast is only one of the many events offered students by this organization. Ron Naito K'e'iv?fir'?f ..,,A..a-wxmv,-n-f Varsity Baseball Season Disappointing The Varsity baseball team compiled a 5 Win!7 loss record. According to Coach jack Ryan, this record resulted from a lack of ex- perience and untimely injuries. Burly Wayne Karneyand quick-handed Dennis Schuman pro- vided the hitting for the Cards. jim Anderson played first and Don Nelson shortstop, Pitch- ing, although the record doesn't show it, seemed to be the key cog in the Cardinal attack. junior Rob Mayo, sophomore Bruce Cavallaro, and senior Wayne Karney, provided the power from the mound. The outlook for next year looks bright, with only three s e n i o r s graduating. Coach Ryan appears optimistic. One mark of an educated person is the ability to examine problems, evaluate factors favorable and unfavorable to their solution, and to perceive their signifi- cance in the total structure of individual or institutional goals. To communicate knowledge, to nurture maturity, to develop skills in using a rational problem -solving approach-all these are goals of the school. But it is equally impor- tant that each of you learn to maintain a sense of balance and perspective when confronting personal, community and vvorld problemsg that you possess a sense of calm objectivity at times when others about you make the road harder . The world desperately needs people who solve problems, rather than magnifying them. EDWIN SCHNEIDER Principal MR. JAMES H. SCI-HELL Administrative Vice Principal V 's TC? MR. Cafeteria, Custodial Staffs Crucial to School Ever thought about who has raised the flag in the morning before even early bird students get here? Or how early some people have gotten up in order to provide food for first period study hall? The real unsung heroes of Lincoln are the custodial and cafeteria staff, Mrs. Laura Anson, head of the cafeteria staff and Mr. Charles Probert of the custodial staff are responsible for meeting the phys- icalneedsof what amounts to a small city, that must be fed, cleaned up after, and kept in operating order. 181 Supporting Staff Clerical Staff And Secretaries Vitally important to the classroom program at Lincoln are the library, student store, and bookroom. Each is managed by a staff member carefully selected and trained for their Work. Mrs. Martha Tathwell, who manages the stu- dent store, must keep all school financial rec- ords and handles all records of ticket sales, as well as supervise sale of school supplies. Help- ing students find books they need, checking circulation, shelving, and other library tasks are left to Mrs. jean Shirley. Operating at the hub of the school, Lincolns' four secretaries provide the links to tie together the varied aspects of the school organization. Checking attendance, handling bulletins, oper- ating the switchboard and sorting the mail are some of the jobs the secretaries undertake to keep the school informed.
