IN MEMORIAM In September of 1959 Llncoln Hlgh School experlenced one of the proudest days 1n 1ts hlstory After many years of the comblned efforts of Llncoln students a.nd teachers and members of the communlty at large the statue of Abraham Llncoln created by Frederlc Llttman was completed and presented to the student body ln an lmpresslve dedlcatlon ceremony At that tlme Lmcoln was further honored by the presence of one ofxts most lllustrlous graduates as guest speaker the Honorable Rxchard L Neuberger Umted States Senator from Oregon Less than slx months la ter Lxncoln students along wlth the entlre state of Oregon and the entlre natlon were dxstressed a.nd shocked to learn of Senator Neuberger's un t1mely passmg The flve and a half years whxch Hxchard Xeuberger spent ln the Senate of the Lnlted States were not the sum total of hls accomplxshments as IS the case w1th many men who achleve that dlstmctlon Rather they constxtuted only another development ln a fruxtful llfe ln addltlon to h1s po lltlcal service on both state and federal levels he was a prornlnent author havlng written several books and contrlbuted wxdely to perxodlcals At the tlme of hls death Senator Neuberger was courageously en gagedm a campalgn for re electlonto h1s seatln the Senate despxte a grave 1llness he had suffered tn the summer of 1905 Most observers were agreed that opponents would be hard pressed to defeat h1m But as IS the case wlth all devoted men Senator 'Neuberger was self sacrxflclng and dxd not slacken the r1gorous pace he had set for hlmself even ln the face of personal catastrophe When men of thls callber recelve the wldespread and well deserved recogmtxon that Senator Neuberger enjoy ed the places and people 1n thelr backgroul ds prosper ln the reflected glory ln thxs way Ltncoln Hxgh School shared and w1ll contxnue to share the. greatness of Rlchard Neuberger 6 1 1 v 1 1 , .
