M74 ' ci-U-L0 MQ, ,Jig-' Men who live by the strength of their individual convictions often face public censure and disapprovalg thus they must develop courage and character if they or their ideals are to survive. Such a courage was the foundation for the creed of battle which Abraham Lincoln followed during his insistent warfare against his own limitations, against the prejudices of others, and against the forces that threatened to rip a union apart. Loneliness was his reward, but he endured it as the price he must pay to secure a stable future for the people of the United States of America. A trailblazer in every sense of the word, Abe Lincoln bequeathed to his nation and friends a legacy of idealism consisting of the intelligent search for freedom, truth, and a better way of life. Perhaps the most worthwhile gift he transmitted to the students of Lincoln High School, however, was the courage to be true to the best that lies within them. Lincolnites are guardians of the name of Abraham Lincoln, for through our actions, good or bad, we represent Lincoln's name and preserve the symbolism and esteem in which it is held. The search for a better way of life, upheld by Lincoln, is being carried on in our own school, for our teachers, parents, and administration are constantly endeavoring to stimulate us with the most thought-provoking methods of education. If we are true to the best that lies within us, we must be worthy of these endeavors by making use of this education. A Thus, in the spirit of our namesake, and to help commemorate the 150th anniversary of his birth, the Cardinal staff would like to acknowledge the efforts of these people--as inspired by Lincoln--by dedicating this record of the school year 1958-1959 to the enthusiastic search for knowledge. A fulfilling future can lie only in the acquisition of knowledge that can be applied toward building a more meaningful life, for day by day our world is becoming far more technically demanding and complex. We, the present students of Lincoln High School, are fortunate because we can serve as trailblazers for future generations of teenagers--we can promote a new concept of the meaning of secondary education. To immortalize Lincoln's name in the realm of education, and to provide a more durable future for our children, we can pioneer the idea of sincere intellectual enthusiasm. Such a venture would be like a drop of water in a pond that slowly spreads, it never stops . 4
