SUPERINTENDENT JONATHAN W. EDWARDS He started his Portland career as a classroom teacher and coach at Lincoln High School. Superintendent J. W. Edwards knows thoroughly every part of the Portland School System. Having been an employee of the district for over thirty years, and having worked as classroom teacher, coach, department head, and assistant superintendent, he has learned by experience to appreciate the problems of all school personnel. X The rapid growth of Portland's school population has posed many difficulties which Mr. Edwards and the Board of Directors meet each year with courage, determination, and integrity. From year to year the School Board is made up of intelligent and generous citizens who perform an outstanding service to the schools and to the city. Below: Mr. Herbert M. Schwab, Mr. Clifford E. Zollinger, Dr. Dorothy O. Johansen, Mr. Wendell Gray, Mr. Jeffery Holbrook, Mr. James C. Yeomans, and Mr. R. M. Robson.

ECQFCQKYGD ' 0 No man is an island, entire of itself, said John Donneg and as truly may it be said that no school is an institution entire of itself. A school is an inseparable part of the commlmity in which it is situated, and of that community's past history, its present activities, and its future hopes. How fortunate are the schools of Portland, Oregon, that they exist in a city which for over one hundred years has believed in and supported public education. How fortunate is Lincoln High School, in particular, that it receives such friendly support from its immediate neighborhood, and that it enjoys the continued and enthusiastically expressed interest and goodwill of its thousands of graduates not only in the community but scattered throughout the world.
