The senior prom arranged by this class for their predecessors of January, 'as held in the Masonic Temple - making this dance larger and more aborate than any before attempted by a Lincoln class. The class became a bit unconventional when it attempted to adopt a -ew, more modern class pin in place of the standard pin used by preceding lasses. Another innovation of the June class, was the establishment of an sembly board in an attempt to present more interesting and educational semblies. A number of other committees were formed and functioned 1 ciently throughout the term. How mortals rush to praise a silent heart! A heart that, when it beat, knew all of life, Of hate, despair, of poverty, and dying, And then this very trivial change . . . his death. Dead hearts stay dead despite your tardy sighing. You praise him now, praise him that's turned to dust Your words are gracious, but the man's at rest, Put flowers on his grave . . . declare him great, But wasted is this new-created zest. He spurns you nowg his death was your death too, For now, you see, his lines were all too few -JAMES G. Punm' 15 4 Crab-Apple Fee in Winter Your fragile branches frosted with the snow Are black against such dazzling purity, And in the warm brown earth your roots do know That joyful spring is still a surety. Little and dainty in your frailty, You shyly pose against the glistening field, A dancer, wise as all eternity, And yet, your faith becomes for you a shield. For you have learned the one eternal truth, That hope forever to the heart does cling, You have within yourself the perfect proof, The certainty of e'er-returning spring. O, little tree, that which you know so well, Would that my heart to me this truth could tell! 'MARY ANN CAMPBELL s art, Day Dreaming The seventh period is the one period in the day which I really enjoy, for during those forty-five minutes, I accomplish more than the greatest scientists of the past or present have. I have amassed the greatest fortune ever possessed by one person. I am also the greatest peacemaker of all time. Just a week ago today I added the Ford millions to my bank account, and hired Henry Morgenthau as my office boy at a salary of one hundred thousand dollars a day. The latter part of last week I bought Germany, and ordered Hitler and his henchmen to scrub the streets. Yesterday I settled the wars in Spain and China. Tomorrow I expect to be nominated for President. Who knows? I may be elected! I also have the power to go into the past or future as I please. I have been one of Napoleon's most trusted generals, and I sailed with Columbus on his voyage of discovery. It is always a great shock to me when the bell rings, signaling the end of the period and also my accomplishments for the day.-PETER SHEPHERD. Fendi It is amusing to note that every time a layman makes a success in his chosen field, some worthy people ask him about his personal religion. Professor Einstein recently delighted his fans with some obscure remarks about a cosmic deity and religion. The astronomer, says Mr. Einstein, has the best sense of values. The stargazers can see, from their studies, how small man is, in comparison with the universe. This is obviously true, but, according to Einstein's theory of relativity, look how incompre- hensibly large we are, compared to the atom. It seems to me that the esteemed scientist is going about this in the wrong way. I refuse to be awed by a huge universe when I can look at it with a telescope. If some astral body were looking at me with a microscope, I would reconsider, but as long as I am doing the looking, I obstinately decline to be intimidated by mere bulk. The conclusion which should be reached by contemplation of the universe is the eternal truth of God's grandeur, not man's wretch- edness. At any rate, Herr Astronomer had something there, when he announced his original theory. I think it's all just too, too relative.-FRANK MILLER. Farm For a little while we will miss you terribly--for a little While you may miss us, too, and have an empty feeling down inside, but we cannot be always looking back with sighs and regrets-we must face the future and what it holds for us. We need not go unaccompanied on our journey, for pleasant memories make congenial companions, and all of us have a rich store of those. Lincoln, to us, will never be just an antiquated heap of bricks, with musty books and battered desks. In our minds, it will always be filled with laughing students, walking down the halls-students who are very much the same as we were. Students bending over their books, and learning from some of the same teachers we have had. You have moulded our character and personality more than any of us realize at this moment, you have fostered in us the qualities of tolerance, friendliness, democracy, and ambition. May we always fia- 'T 1 l !.v3usfm1,1 Klfxggwlikyf faxed- .g'p'M's1 44. jlfiqgqgsly lm-1.ix3n4.ir,iy1 1 :.w we-W1 '2i'Yf1:l Lf , .5. .,m.,,a,5,- .... , .nf ,em ,V-.rf vin m ., , v M ..f.l 5 1,4 ,f I , - , 157, , Mi. . nf., - - t. 1.- ,ll b.,, I-,, live up to the Lincoln tradition in our lives and in our works!- LISA GILL. Organizations The ability to Work with others for a common end is one of the greatest demands made on an in- dividual by democracy. In the various organizations we foster that ability and encourage the student to follow his favorite pursuit while he makes new and lasting friendships. Such work and such feeling inspired the staff of this annual to sacrifice school hours and personal freedom. From the Art department was called the cream of available talent, from the English de- partment came students with a love and feeling for literature. Combined with these experts in cultural fields were types equally needed . . . capable, business-like students . . . efficient, responsible workers. Others with executive ability, coordinated these into a satisfactory working unit. Directed by thoroughly experienced advisors, inspired by school loyalty, these students devoted their Senior term to the success of the tangible symbol of these classes . . . the 1939 Yearbook. Wade Williams has been coaching football and baseball at Lincoln for a number of years and has turned out many athletes who have become college stars. His work is known and respected among sportsmen throughout the Northwest. TRACK ANTON G. LINDSTROM Anton G. Lindstrom is a comparative new- comer to the Lincoln coaching staff, having been here only three years. Under him, track has come from oblivion to be a ranking sport. He has built up several individual stars as well as some highly respected teams. ,f FOOTBALL .femndrawx Ammon Martin Stubblebine Smith Henniger Mears Rawson Brouillard Throop Mt. Williams Front raw: Sparks Erskine Lolich Johansen Mitchell Akerstrom Ellis Baker Davidson Football Four essential qualifications for a good football team are weight, experience, spirit and above all, a coach. We were lax in the first two but we had the last two in abundance. Although we defeated only Commerce and tied Washington, if one cares to look into the records, the most sur- prising thing he will Hnd will be the number of times the Cardinal team held back the on- slaught of opposing teams within the ten-yard line. When defeat was certain, the Lincoln lads gave the rival team perplexing moments, and not until the final crack of the gun did our boys relax. Mr. Williams' coaching ability was shown in the all-star game, when the all-stars de- feated Jefferson 13-6. They were the hrst all-star team to pass the champions. Lincoln's All-Stars were our captain, Tom Terry, Harry Johansen, a four-year lettermang Bob Mitchell, the hardest hitter on our team, and Jim Ellis, our best pass receiver. Graduating lettermen are Alan Davidson, Malcolm Stubblebine, Albert Jensen, Byron Baker, Ralph Oches, Harold Throop, Bob Sparks, Jim Rawson, Tom Terry, Bob Mitchell, Frank Roberts, Harry Johansen, Stew Fredericks, and Harry Etlinger. 1 Williamx' All-Stars Boero Harper Foster Mitchell Roosevelt Franklin Gran t Lincoln K. Their first game was with the Tigard varsity who beat them Younce Roosevelt rg,-o. They defeated Washington, Commerce, Roosevelt, and Jefferson, losing only to the Jefferson Ramblers and Benson. Kenneth Atveson kicked off over the goal line consistently and will be a rival of Jim Ellis' kick-off duties. Other out- standing stars who are expected to fill vacant varsity posts are: Harry Foltz, a 2.50-pound tackle, Ed De Vall, a line smashing halfback, and Bob Signor, an excellent passer and punter who may be a triple threat man next year. Sq UXUX I v-m!v 'W 'Baseball Lincoln has an excellent chance of winning the baseball championship this year, having a returning letterman for every position except shortstop. Last year Lincoln was second, winning II games and losing only 3. Conspicuous by their absence will be John Pesky, John Bubalo and Bill Carney, all better than .4oo hitters, and Chuck Crosby, ace moundsman. Lincoln will have an excellent pitching staff including Stew Fredericks, Ken Clow, Dan Momeyer, Wes Hoyt, Vincent Pesky and Frank Lolich. There will be a very snappy infield including Jim Ellis at first base, Johnny Granato at second base, at shortstop will be Dick Langbridge, and Clark Graham at third base. Catching will be Joe Erautt. The outfield will consist of Bill Timmins, Harold Ogden and Stanley Robinson. Most of these boys played last summer on the American Legion team which won the North- west Championship but as defeated at Grand Forks, N. D., for the Western Championship. D. West, Weatherly, Combs, Karterman, Bubalo, McMahon, Fredericks Coach Wright, H. West, Throop, Jenny, Larson, Graham, Miyoshi, Alvord, mgr. 'Basketball The Cardinal basketball team started the current season badly crippled. Such stars as Jack Wershkul, Joe Lebenzon, Vern Reynolds, and Al Hansen, every one a first or second string all-city man, had been lost by graduation. However, the scrappy Cards wound up this year in first division, tied for third place with Franklin and Roosevelt. Coach Dave Wright put a team on the maple that established this record: won Hrst four games and became known as Wright's Wonders , lost next Hve games to drop into second division, Won following three games, then lost the next, but took the season's final. Beat every team in the league at least once except the Champions of Jefferson. The team's starting line-up read: Forwards, Dick West and Wendel Weatherly, Guards, Bill McMahon, Ted Combs, or Stew Fredricks, Center, John Bubalo. Letter-earning sub- stitutes were Hugh West, Harold Throop, Monroe Karterman, and Clark Graham. We appreciate their excellent work, and we especially appreciate the help- ful services of Mr. Donald Abbott. To Mr. Arthur L. Ransford, who took our group picturesg to the Gladys Gilbert Studio, which provided our individual photographs, to the Camera Club, which took our Candid shots, and to Brubaker Aerial Surveys who furnished some of our scenic views, we offer our thanks for fine work and patient cooperation. Within our own school the staff has had invaluable assistance from its advisors, from all of the depart- ments, and from so many interested fellow students that it would be impossible to name them all here. We feel, however, that the following underclassmen should be mentioned for their untiring work in this production: Dan Beasley, page make-upg Bill Ammon, sports materialg Carl Henniger and David Billings, candid shots, Fred Gong, David Semon, Vernon Brown, and Leonard Shaver, drawings, art work and cartoons.
