American history display their scrapbooks. Guilty! A trial in Mr. Walkor's civics class The History Department The History Department ot Lincoln High School is as old as the school itselt. It is a continuation ot the history department ot the old Portland High School, which in its early beginnings had no classes in sociology, economics, and current events. The study ot Ancient and Medieval History toolc one year instead ot the present two, and Civics was taught as a sideline ot American History. English History was given one year in the curricula, but was not made compulsory. For many years there was no head ot the History Department, but in I905 Miss Ruth Rounds was appointed as tirst head. She continued in that ottice tor a number ot years: during her time the history curricula was changed to its present torm-tirst year being ancient history: second, medieval and modern: third, American history, and tourth, civics and a choice ot sociology or economics. Atter Miss Rounds' retirement, Mr. Ernest Schwarztrauber became head ot the department. About a decade ago, he went east to get a Ph. D. degree and is now a protessor. Miss Laura Northup is the present head. Under her there are eight tull-time teachers and one part-time teacher. , ,Q V .vs 1, L 'Q W , . , In' is: X . x -i , J ' if x ' r A s wifi' it-W hmdfex H1 eltfl is Q v MISS Deporfm er :inc of Itgarla Q1-ad HUP 'Q n 9 I, y 6 Uqf ' bg s e sfq,feJf100 ,fugefx wzgesf fha H' 'aching er 54,9 JY.
