It is a continuation ot the history department ot the old Portland High School, which in its early beginnings had no classes in sociology, economics, and current events. The study ot Ancient and Medieval History toolc one year instead ot the present two, and Civics was taught as a sideline ot American History. English History was given one year in the curricula, but was not made compulsory. For many years there was no head ot the History Department, but in I905 Miss Ruth Rounds was appointed as tirst head. She continued in that ottice tor a number ot years: during her time the history curricula was changed to its present torm-tirst year being ancient history: second, medieval and modern: third, American history, and tourth, civics and a choice ot sociology or economics. Atter Miss Rounds' retirement, Mr. Ernest Schwarztrauber became head ot the department. About a decade ago, he went east to get a Ph. D. degree and is now a protessor. My grandmofher says ThaT HarrieTT Markham's hair reached her ankles. She used To leT favored guesTs come To see her wiTh her hair down, and she would comb if ouf for Them. The gleaming red mass hung down her back like a manfle of fire. She never paid The hofel servanTs. buT They were afraid To leave because she knew Too much abouf Their pasT hisTory. She carried a horsewhip wherever she wenT, and Terror of her whip and The fire in her eyes kepT Them from becoming rebellious. On an island she had a farm and a dairy ThaT were worked by These servanfs, and The more im- porTanT of her guesTs had fresh sfrawberries in big yellow bowls and cream in milk pans laid on Their Tables for breakfasT every morning, and fresh vegeTables for dinner. They were noT likely To see such food anywhere else in Alaska. Harriefl' drove down To meeT every boaT in an ancienf sTage coach, cracking her heavy whip in The air as she claTTered down The docks. The oTher hofels senT aufomobiles To meeT Their guesTs, buf people were highly enTerTained To be driven in old-fashioned sTyle To The famous Markham House. HarrieTT had noT always run a hoTel. and she regaled her guesTs by The hour wiTh Tales of her youTh. They had Three children, and when The circus wenT broke The clown lefT for The STaTes, leaving her sTranded in Skagway wiTh Three young boys To feed. She mended The miners' clofhes and did Their washing, and The children sold newspapers on The sTreeTs. SomeTimes They were given a dollar for one paper by The sofT- hearTed Townspeople. HarrieTT scrimped and pinched unTil she had money enough To sTarT her hoTel on a small scale, and when iT grew larger she senT her boys To college in The STaTes. buT none of her boys came back To Alaska . . . PRESENTING: MARGE HOSFELDT A seventh termer, Marge's Vignettes accur- ately describes Lincoln as we Lincolnites see it. At times she can be a little too harsh in her iudgment ot things. She has a quick temper, but a saving sense ot humor. Marge is assistant editor ot the Bi-Weekly Cardinal. Her especial tield is the Features page, dealing with Lincoln personalities and teatures. These she treats terse- ly, curtly and humorously. A possible future: news Columnist, something like Dorothy Parker. BARBARA HERVIN l-ler Spenserian stanza, Once To All Things, expresses Barbara's attitude toward lite. She writes, not a great deal, but well, and her writ- ing shows a close observance ot things. Barbara is always sincere. Her sincerity and sympathy have won her a clear title to the apt adiective, good sport. She graduated in January, having accom- plished excellent work as vice-president ot the student body. JIM GOODSELL Numbered amon Jim's various talents is writ- ing. Once editor o?the Bi-Weekly Cardinal, now student body president, Jim, in spite ot these time-taking activities, finds time to turn out ex- cellent prose and poetry, much ot it expressing thought tar beyond his seventeen years. He draws his imagery strongly, simply, in a clear-cut style. l-le is the author ot numerous oems and short stories. l-lis poem, The Pine, iiaund else- where in this section, is a fine example ot his literary work. JEAN LOUTTIT Jean's story, l-larriet Markham, is, in my opin- ion, one ot the best pieces in the literary section. She has chiselled her character into sharp outline, clearing away a mass ot cluttering tacts trom this true story, and writing with a fine restraint. Jean herselt is quite ditterent from the tiery Harriet. Imaginative, a little on the dreamy side, she divides her time between writing and acting in plays given by Masquers, the school dramatic club. Attention should be called to the illustrations tor this section, which were done by Miss Halvor- sen's art classes. sffjrvfhb . ., , ?-7777-W W Y -W. , L ee., .x ,g 'F I '3' '- b Y, K I . Mollie wants to study interior decoration, a vocation admirably adapted to her talents, and one at which she should succeed. SHIRLEY MOORE Shirley is not only artistically inclined, but also has a bent toward the poetical. l-ler several il- lustrations show the dett touch ot a subtle imag- ination. Although she graduated in the January class, her interest in art and the yearbook'has carried her into a post-graduate course in art. M. V. TUTTLE This is the tirst time that Jean Tuttle, also a P. G., has ever taken a course in art. She has a patience tor detail and draws with a light touch which gives her work a rather ethereal quality. She is undecided as to her tuture, but such excel- lent work merits art a deep consideration. C. V. BROWER Vernon Brower, who did the fine illustration tor War, is a third termer, and has been taking art since he entered Lincoln. He uses shading and sharp lines to good advantage. and shows himself capable ot doing exacting work in details. f T M4 IN LOVING MEMORY Our own beloved Sainls, who go before. Tennis This year there will be a hotly contested battle between the members ot the tennis squad for a place in the first team, which consists of tour boys and four girls. Left from last year's team are Alan Ellsburg, Harold Philan, and Jean Ells- burg. Many of the other members of the squad are pretty even, but those having the best chance of winning a berth are Virginia Millet, who won the fall tournament, Richard Lubliner. Bill Snider. and Kay Chin. Last year's team came out near the top, and this year's team has a good chance of doing the same. Golf Golf, usually a very small sport, seems to be growing in popularity at Lincoln, for a very large squad reported this year. Especially noticeable is the large number of lower classmen, who will probably carry high honors for Lincoln in their senior year, For the last month and a half the squad has been practicing in groups ot tour, and a record kept ot their scores to find the four best for the first team. Left from last year are Charles Green, Claire Thatcher and Don Plympton. There are also many new members who are good pros- pects.
