R, They Build Too Low Who BuildBeneath the Stars CCLASS POEMJ F.-wif Howif, S. P. lVe've smoothed the bulging hummocks of black soilg lfpon our crying backs welve carried stones So that their humping sides could never spoil The richness of the upturned earth's brown tones. Now we have hauled great blocks of marble, white As stars, and strong as pine trees in a gale, And mixed a creamy mortar of the bright Shan-p-gleaming hopes and dreams that are so frail. Y'Ve stand with squares of marble at our feet And mortar laying ready to apply, And with the white stones heaped about, the fleet Sharp twinkle of dead white shows in the sky.
