We were striving to he champions and often won the laurel crown for all to see: winning state twice in basketball, going to state in spelling, drama, tennis. girls1 and hoysl track, band, choir . . . And she was proud of us. Yet her greater desire was for us to he champions of ourselves: to develop our hearts and minds to the greatest extent. to acquire the knowledge, courage, and self-discipline to make wise choices. She worried about us, searched for ways to help us teach and learn. When she represented us, she was immaculate, ar- ticulate, elegant. When competitors would have placed us at a disadvantage. she researched the rules and defended our interests with dignified determinatiun. She was our champion. The announcement of her retirement caused hun- dreds of Port Arthurans and others to laud her for outstanding achievement and service through a hen- quet, receptions, plaques, telegrams, proclamations, gifts. Perhaps the most touching tribute was staged by the hand and choir: ending their spring concert, as a complete surprise to Dr. Mitchell, the curtains opened to reveal an adult choir which included highly accom- plished singers and a nationally known accompanist - all ex-students of Dr. Verlie Mitchell.
