Dr. Verlie Mitchell, immaculate, articulate, knowledgeable, evokes the respect of those who hear her speak in public or who meet her for the first time. She generates the love and admiration of those fortunate enough to have a longer acquaintance with her. Many eyes were on her when she became principal of Lincoln in 1979; not everyone predicted success. Now the rejoic- ing is unanimous: major improvements in the physical appearance and in the academic climate of Lincoln are obvious. The dedication and loyalty she has inspired in the Lincoln family have occasioned a resurgence of com- munity pride in Lincoln. Believing that every child can and must learn, Dr. Mitchell places the greatest emphasis on instruction and seeszzLincolnts recent ascendancy in athletic contests as t! ill an enjoyable and important by-product of a serious and sound academic program. In the coming year, she plans to continue her thrust to enhance the basic skills of students and the quality of the instructional program as a whole. High expectations for teachers and students will remain her trademark. In addition, she intends to stress increasing parental in- volvement in the educational progress of students. uThe whole thing is the attitude, she says, speaking of the basis of Lincoln's recent progress. Asked if she would take the principalship again if she had it all to do over, she replies, ItI wouldnlt want to miss this for anything in the world. It has been a major contributing factor to my professional growth and to my growth as a person. I have been where I wanted to be.
