OLN' BEES mm: mm to succeed The theme of the ,84 Bumblebee is uWorking Together'i because at Lincoln, that is the chief principle that keeps our school in operation. Lincolnites realize that winking together produces progress. This theme fits Lincolnis attitude of constant cohesiveness which is shown daily on the Bumblebee scene. Whether it is the yelling of our cheerleaders, the devastating play of our athletic teams, the astonishing performances by the band and choir, or the academic success of classroom students, we at Lincoln are tied together by unbreakable bonds of tradition, love, and dedication. Lincoln Miss ' V e WK II in . eA VI w 'iA 3:35:37; , $1.13,..y. Dedication Mrs. Robinson cheerfully coordinated the faculty luncheons and prepared many of the desserts herself. Her wit and charm made the preparation of a recipe 3 special event For most persons there is one in dividual who constitutes a major force in their lives, who furnishes an impetus, a drive to keep them going, even through the roughest of times. For many students and adults at Lincoln, Mrs. Eura Robinson, former head of the Home Economics Depart ment, was that person. The essence of kindness and fairness, of neatness and accuracy, she stood as a monument to practic- ing what one teaches. Her very man- ner of looking at and speaking with others gave them something to live up to while making them know they were loved all the while. She was never afraid to express her thoughts; she had reason to know their value. The Lincoln family loved her and mourned her passing with lonely hearts, but with full con- fidence that she had gone on to joys which those of us who remain bound to the cares of the earth cannot fathom. In her willingness to work with all others, she exemplified the theme of our book, ttWorking TogethertY and we dedicate it to her and to the memory of her goodness. e t W... School Board Opens Year at Lincoln Port Arthur Independent School District teachers, aides, and administrators met on Wednesday, August 17, for the opening of the 1983-84 school year. For the first time in the history of the district, founded in 1899, the meeting at which the school board and the ad- ministration present the goals for the year was held on the Lincoln campus. When Dr. Louis Reed, assistant superintendent for instruction and program evaluation, spoke of holding the meeting at Lin- coln as part of the districtts ef- fort to Hpromote the oneness which we all desire? he evoked enthusiastic applause. Dr. Charles McBee, assistant superintendent for personnel, can Dr, Mary Jean George, schuol board president, articulated the goals for verses with Mr. Al Dugan, school board member, av. the openingmf- 1983-84. school coffee, Dr. Louis Reed, assistant superintendent for instruction and program Mrs. Linda Monroe, DeQueen teacher, takes refreshments at the evaluation,1ntroduces the program. opening coffee 21 Dr. Verlie Mitchell, immaculate, articulate, knowledgeable, evokes the respect of those who hear her speak in public or who meet her for the first time. She generates the love and admiration of those fortunate enough to have a longer acquaintance with her. Many eyes were on her when she became principal of Lincoln in 1979; not everyone predicted success. Now the rejoic- ing is unanimous: major improvements in the physical appearance and in the academic climate of Lincoln are obvious. The dedication and loyalty she has inspired in the Lincoln family have occasioned a resurgence of com- munity pride in Lincoln. Believing that every child can and must learn, Dr. Mitchell places the greatest emphasis on instruction and seeszzLincolnts recent ascendancy in athletic contests as t! ill an enjoyable and important by-product of a serious and sound academic program. In the coming year, she plans to continue her thrust to enhance the basic skills of students and the quality of the instructional program as a whole. High expectations for teachers and students will remain her trademark. In addition, she intends to stress increasing parental in- volvement in the educational progress of students. uThe whole thing is the attitude, she says, speaking of the basis of Lincoln's recent progress. Asked if she would take the principalship again if she had it all to do over, she replies, ItI wouldnlt want to miss this for anything in the world. It has been a major contributing factor to my professional growth and to my growth as a person. I have been where I wanted to be. Registrar Counselor Mary Brown Library Aide Custodian Whenever a show of love or caring was needed, Maggie Rhodes was there. Whenever anyone could not see how he was going to survive this pace another day, Maggie Rhodes knew how. And the way she told it, it all seemed so simple that anyone would wonder that he had not seen the solution himself. No rules could stop the students from giving her a birthday party every year, a tradition passed down from their older brothers and sisters. A rule could be broken, but not a sacred tradition. Here, Mrs. Rhodes, although she was not junior sponsor that year, assists Yolibeth Pagan and James Smith with the Junior class breakfast. She announced late in the year that she would not teach in '84-,85, but somehow no one believes her place can be taken. Maggie Rhodes English Teacher Long enamored of its patriarch for his knowledge of countless subjects as well as his sharp mind and ready wit, the Lincoln family sighed with relief when Mr. West was persuaded to teach one calculus course next year. The sage of second floor had been a wise and caring teacher here for thirty-nine years. I. West studied at Prairie View, Texas Southern, Lamar, and the University of Minnesota, but his wisdom is a natural one, cultivated by many years of dealin with students. Despite fads mils philosophies 1n education, he has remained dedicated to his own purpose: service to the students. Of the changes he has seen at Lincoln, he feels that most were for the better, especially those in the last five years. He will miss the friendship of the students and teachers, yet he looks forward to reading, writing, and relaxing. Elegant, lovely, beautifully attired, Mrs. Bessie Bernard adorned the offices of Lin- coln for thirty-five years, but upon reaching early retirement age, decided to become a volunteer worker and housewife, as she had often envisioned herself. Always accepting the challenge of work- ing with various personalities and backgrounds, Mrs Bernard helped teachers with their grade books, encour- aged students to strive for success when they felt like giving up and enabled former students to obtain birth verifications by researching old files. She often reminded students that school ls first checkpoint for grades, attendance, and character. Having commanded the respect of the Lincoln family for seventeen years through his accuracy, consistency, and knowledge of the school and its needs, Mr Benjamin Kiker looks forward to not having to answer to the alarm clock every morning. The now fatherly figure who has bright- ened the day, given just the right advice, and dried the tears of many a teacher as well as student, always impresses others with his special ways of evoking respect and a positive response. Mrs. Mary Brown hardly feels old enough to retire because, she says, uThe students keep you young. Though she first expected her transfer to Lincoln, com- ing so late in her career, to be difficult, Mrs. Brown found that she was quickly taken into the hearts of the Lincoln family members. Mn Bill LaPoint never hesitated to gently but firmly correct anyone who marred the glistening surfaces of our halls and classrooms. Always aware that he was dealing with students, he believed in teaching responsibility for and pride in our school.
