CHAPlEB ONE BACKGROUND AND SETTING The Visitors approached our tall. dark City and marveled at the galaxy of lights spread like horizontal Christmas trees across the skyline. We told them that the lights which illuminate our skyline are the lights of our major industrieFCulf Oil Corporation. Texaco. Inc.. and Atlantic Refinery. We told them. also, that Port Arthur is not only the oil refining center of the world. but is fast becoming a manu- A facturingz mecca. and its fishing lpontlsfl are the fishermanls paradise, both industrially and for the pleasure of it. The parents of most of us are employed by these industries. and we. too, get pleasure from fishing in its waters. Ours is one of the youngest cities in the Southwest tapproximately 64 years oldl, and has a population of 65,713. It is located in the southeastern part of the State of Texas. on the west shore of Sabine Lake, and a short distance from the Gulf of Mexico. A steady landmark in this community setting is our schooleLincoln High. Todayls one block edifice. facing Abe Lincoln Avenue. is a far cry from its humble initial five-room structure in 1910. Its progress from a twelve-grade school tthe only one in the community! to a high school tgrades nine through twelvel this school year is really an index of the general increase in school population and in school buildings in the community. About 1210 students are enrolled in one or more of the nine departments in pur- suit of courses leading to the high school degree. There are 66 members on the faculty, all of whom possess the baccalaureate degree, with 24 having earned the Masterls degree from universities all over the United States.
