In this system of free public education, our Board of Education is a good example of democratic representation and procedure. The members who comprise the Board receive no compensation other than the satisfaction of rendering services to the youth of Port Arthur. As a policy-making body, and the official body of the school district, the Board of Education has the responsibility of providing funds through the levying and collecting of taxes for the construction of school buildings, purchasing of supplies and equipment, and the maintenance and operation of all phases of the school program. The employment of all school personnel is clone by this organization through recommendation of the Superintendent. Members are elected for a two-year term. The Board elects its own president and vice president, the maior officers of the organization. The president appoints two or three members to each of seven standing committees: Executive ewhich is headed by the vice presidentD, Finance, Teachers, Supplies, Property and Building, Public Relations, and Health and Sanitation. Regular meetings are held each second Tuesday of the month and are open to the public and the press.
