LINCOLN SCHOOL BUILDING Sbort History of Lincoln High Sclyool In 1905 the Port thhur School for Negroes was organized with Professor H. I. Criner serving as principal, from 1905 to 1908, Professor M. W1 Lawson succeeded him, serving from 1908 to 1914 with three assistants. In 1914 Professor W. E. Sampson took over the office, retaining it to the pres- ent day. Under him the iaculty had a minimum 01 four teachers and c1 maxie mum of 47 during the intervening years. The school was first conducted on Sixth Street together with the Sixth Street Baptist Church and the Odd Fellows 1-1011. Upon recommendation 01 Super intendent G. M. Sims, to the school board, the school came into possession of an entire block, situated on Linco1n Hvenue, arid erected a four-room frame building 1mm which the present school derives its name In 1920 the first unit of the present building was contsructed, consisting of 18 class rooms. Hs the number of pup11s increased, Supterintendent G. Sims with a far reaching vision saw the need of larger accommodations to meet the demand. Then in 1929 twenty 1201 class rooms were added and one more block for play activities. In that year our enrollment was 2080, with 11 grades In connection there is a library containing 2862 volume; 01 well-equipped cafeteria, an auditorium seating 800, and c1 principals office with all modern conveniences. There are also rest rooms, comfortably furnished; and six lcvorctories. There are departments for Home Economics, Hrts and Crafts, Manual Hrts, Sewing, Physical Education, Music, First Bid, and Chemical and Physical Laboratory The building is heated by steam and well lighted. In 1918 the first graduates to go from this school were three in number, Since then there has been an ever increasing number of graduates tthe war has caused c1 decrease1 and now in 1945 the number is 34. It has always been the aim of the school to send out students who are worthy of graduation and who have completed the prescribed course with credit rather than mere numbers. We are proud to say that Lincoln High School is an accredited high school of 12 grades.
