By dictionary definition, support group wos described as a synonym of group process; a rime for considering things Together. But ro the members of Lincoln's straight” support group, it wos more than a definition our of Webster's It was a rime for sharing experiences and listening ro problems common ro oil A group member described his support group as. A place ro go ro sort through the problems in your life and deal with them rather than suppressing them ” In addition ro the straight group, there Were several personal growth groups, some chemical awareness groups, o concerned persons ond o quit smoking group. Each group met once a week for one and a half ro two hours with program coordinator Druollo Corson. Though the main purpose of these support groups wos ro offer feedback and provide a supportive atmosphere for srudenrs ofrer rrearmenr, members sometimes found srrengrh outside their groups in the form of a serenity prayer: 'God grant me the serenity ro accept the things I cannot chonge. The courage ro change the things I can. And the wisdom ro know the difference.’ Orher types of support groups were church groups. They supported each orher in Christian fellowship ond spiritual growth Lincoln yudenrs found this support or Son Summit. Search and Young Life Son Summit met Wednesdays at the Portland Adminiyrarion Building. It consisted of about 350 high school srudenrs from around the area. Their evening included competition, media shows, Chrisrion music groups and o talk given by Leader Craig Osborne Son Summit also had a ski trip ro Colorado which attracted mony srudenrs. Wednesdays were also filled by a group colled Search. It involved approximately 70 students who met or St. Edwards Church. This group was led by Duffy Prinrup who stressed risk- taking as a way finding freedom. Their activities included a Hawaiian Luou, hayrides, o balloon drift and a trip ro Texas in the spring. Young Life met on Mondoys or Calvary Church. Singing, games and talks highlighted the meetings. Hayrides, ice creom at Bridgeman's, cording, ond going ro camp wos oil parr of the fun or Young Life. Leoder Joan McCabe (77 Lincoln groduore) summed up Young Life, It's a piece just ro be yourself, ro moke friends ond more importantly, ro learn about God.” Laughter was hard to control for Orion Rue and Greg Povroznik as they shore a joke with o speaker from Storefront SUPPORT YOUR GROUP 27
