'TT-1 IsSftfefc RED BARN TAMI JAHR BEARS HAVE THE SPARK TO LEAVE PARK IN THE DARK was the theme that reflected the en- thusiasm of Lincoln students during Homecoming '76. This year's homecoming involved soccer as well as football. Each day during fourth hour, members of both teams showed off their sexy legs only to reveal that Todd Dilley had the best curves. Bruinettes sold carnations so each class could show it's spir- it. Coronation was extra spe- cial. Sparkling decorations set the mood and tensions were high as returning Queen Maggie Dunne and King Ric Everett crowned the new queen and king, Tami Jahr and Mike Harrer. Friday morning, doors were decorated as usual. At the pep fest, once again The Mighty Rocky led his homecoming cheer. Between the soccer and the football game, decorated cars once again formed Lincoln's home- coming parade. Following the football game was the quiet and magic of the dance. No one who participated in the events will ever for- get that special Spark in the Dark of Homecoming, 1976. Fans packed the stands at the Homecoming football game. Homecoming parade, back again. The 1976 Lincoln Homecoming Royalty. A SPARK IN THE DARK This year's homecom- ing was enlightend by a Spark in the Dark . That was the title of the 1976 Lincoln Homecoming Dance. Couples danced as the band, Montana Starr , played country western music. Some couples wandered out to the courtyard just to relax. The dance started at nine-thirty and was over at eleven-thirty. But the magic did not end there. Many couples topped off the night by dining at some of Bloomington's finest restaurants. The dance was a huge success due to the enthusiasm and spirit of all who participated. It was an event never to be forgotten. Couples dance In the enchantment of the evening. The Sadie Hawkins dance of '76 was a boot-stompin, skirt swo- oshing all around good time. The hillbillies from Lincoln came down from the hills and gathered around for a night of fun. Over-alls, cut-offs, long-underwear and of course the garters were some of the attire worn. The good ole hitch- in booth was there but this year it came along with your option of a divorce. The band Fame really got the hoe-down on the road, dancing, swinging, and just a lot of good ole' fool- ing around was found at this years Sadie. Girls, you really got 'em this year! The week started with Sports Day on Monday and a pep- fest featuring the Lincoln Babettes and Abe's Babes Spirit Cheerleaders. Tuesday's lyceum brought surprizing awards to many unsuspecting seniors. Bob- by socks, slicked back hair and THE GREAT PRE- TENDERS set the mood to the 50's on Wednesday. Thursday was Farmer Day and on Friday, National Honor Society members de- livered the long awaited carnations. The highlight of Snow Week was the 1977 Winter Formal, Nights in White Satin. The peak of Snow week this year was the 1977 Winter Formal, Nights in White Satin. The music of AIRE made an enchant- ing evening for over 200 couples. The highlight of the evening was the coron- ation of Snow Queen Jan Horstman, and Snow King Tom Russett. Afterwards, the royal court danced to a special song just for them. For all who went, the dance will remain as mem- ories locked in their hearts forever. How cute! Sophomores even go all out. Joy fills Queen Jan Horstman’$ face as she feels the crown. 22 Excitement stirs as they crown King Tom Russett. 23 Jay Hilbert, Sue Lloyd THE EGG AND I Have you ever con- sidered packing up and moving out to a chicken farm? That's egg-zactly what the Me Donald family did in the fall comedy, THE EGG AND I. The McDonalds were played by Michelle Taylor, (Betty), Tim Rudol- phi (Don), Sue Lloyd, and Kathy Hooker daughters Anne and Joan). The play was about their often hil- arious efforts to make THEIR chicken farm the best around. Lincoln's new director, Pat Taylor, did a fine job with the assistance of her stu- dent director, Becky Hell- man and, of course, the indispensable crews. The Lincoln Players have done it again! Not now, I have a headache. I thought singing in the rain was supposed to bo romantic. My girdle is killing me! Eeeeek! A mouse! 24 I think it will look cute! Seniors dominate! Time for bed, Kent! Leigh Ann really has pep! PEP FESTS This year's pep fests were peppier than ever. The first fest of the year was the tradi- tional Burn on Sophomore pep fest. The juniors and seniors thoroughly enjoyed the throwing of pacifiers, candy, and paper airplanes at the sophomores. Kent Petterson, sophomore of the year, got an overall view of the pep fest through the bars of his playpen. The following pep fests were justas spirited. The cheerlead- ers, bruinettes, flags, band, and the student body rooted on the various sports teams of Lincoln High. The enthusiasm of the students at Lincoln is matched by no other school. The involvement of the audience in the skits, races, cheers, and contests gave the pep fests an extra glow. The fest would end with our own marching band playing the school song, while the cheerleaders cheered, the bruinettes danced, the flags pompomed, and the crowd stood and clapped and sang along. This year's pep rests, to the people who participated, were alot more than just a half hour out of class. 25 ... and today wo have a really big shooo. The Vo-Tech option for Lincoln students was pro- vided an interesting and at- tractive educational alter- native. Juniors and Seniors have the choice of applying for approximately twenty- five different programs. The selection is varied and the training facilities are excellent. Under Lincoln's unique quarter plan, parti- cipants are awarded three credits each quarter for successful performance in The Vo-tech program. Transportation is provided by the school district. Another valuable benefit may be received by second- ary students. Their appli- cations for entrance into Post Secondary Vo-tech programs receive special attention. Vo-tech is an excellent alternative for some Lincoln students. Jan asks for tho days receipts. Jan sorts the memos 32 Ho says it's easy, HA! W. E. The Work Experience Program is for students who are interested in ex- ploring careers: are ready to experience the real world of work: and need the challenge of a job to motivate them. The goals are to develope in each student good work habits, good attendance, and improve attitudes toward one another and school. It gives each student an opportunity to learn how to set goals and to keep these goals. Credit is given on the basis of how well each student per- forms . Each student is rated by their employer for the job performance. Students have a variety of jobs; many are work- ing in food service, some are employed in clerical, custodial, and factory work. W.E. is an alter- native program offered at Lincoln that will help us attain credit toward grad- uation and prepare us for the world of work. 33 Renac and Debbie share their work of art. Earp, with drum major Paul Vanderscheuren, Lincoln 250 piece Show-band of the Midwest achieved a high stand- ard of excellence in their ac- complishments of this past sea- son. Our marching band per- formed in various areas through- out the Midwest, impressing audience anc competition alike. One of the high points of this season was the LaCrosse Oktoberfest competition in La- Crosse, Wisconsin, where the band took an unexpected first in street marching competition, and then went on to capture another first in field marching competition. On the field they performed with an air of pro- fessionalism that was to be unequaled by any other com- peting bands, and left LaCrosse with both of the Class AA first place trophies. Bear football fans are ac- customed to the variety of half- time shows that the band per- forms during the course of a football season. The spectrum of musical expression was ex- plored by the band students, with songs ranging in intensity from Morris Albert's low-key FEELINGS to Ernesto Lecuona's more vibrant MALAGUENA. Tributes to Disney showtunes, the Big Bands, Lincoln Alumni, and Homecoming royalty com- prised the themes for this sea- son's halftime entertainment. A new tradition was begun this year with the addition of an alumni band that provided an extra touch of flavor to our home- coming festivities. The band performed by spe- cial request on several occa- sion this year. Among these was a command performance for Nel- son Rockefeller at Normandale Junior College. The band also acted as pep band and halftime entertainment for St. Thomas football fans during one of their home football games. All in all it was a highly successful season, proving once again that Lincoln's SHOW- BAND OF THE MIDWEST is truly the showband of the midwest. Lino Abreast Stare 'Em Down Quit faking it, Jon. LINCOLN CONTINENTALS Under new direction by a young, stunning, bright man named Steve Cramer. The Lincoln Contientals have added more personnel in a successful shot at becoming a professional group. After time consuming, rigid, but sometimes fun auditions, this top notch organization sprang into action. This year has been an excellent one at that because of performances at elaborate places like the Gustavus Lodge, the Thun- derbird Hotel, and the Mas- onic Home. Barb and Jo smile brightly. These changes impressed audi- ences at Fort Snelling, Penn, Oak Grove, and, of course Lin- coln. Tradition was not lost, however, when the choirs deliv- ered singing valentines as a fund raiser. In the fall, the group attended the South Sub- urban Orchestra Festival held at Macalaster College, where they played for judges who evaluated their per- formance. They also list- ened to other school orch- estras and feature ensembles. Of course, the orchestra gave traditional concerts at Penn and Lincoln, where their performances were well received by the audiences. Their faithful efforts reflected a quality of spirit found only at Lincoln. They cheered at homecoming with alumni cheerleaders ... they braved the freezing cold to help the soccer team win the state championship ... they cheered on ice ... they supported the basketball team. They danced at victories, they cried at defeats. No other group was so dedicated in trying to make Lincoln number 1. The girls that helped with this task were our one and only Bruinettes. From defeat to victory they have al- ways come through with a smile. Through numberous dances and rou- tines, they demonstrate hard work and enthusiasm. Special gratitude is given to the captains, Sandy Mc- Menemy, and Kris Ritmire without them the dance line wouldn't be the same. You've done it again! Don't shoot. I'll Dane ! THESPIANS!! The International Thespian Society this year was headed by president Pete Lundin, Vice Pres. Donna Hardy, and Sec- retary, Treasurer Darla Lundy. To become a thespian a person must put in many hard hours of work, and the quality of the members show this. Many of them are indispensible to the production of the fine Lincoln plays both in crews and on stage by following their motto Act well your part, for there all honor lies. 57 ABE’S BABES Nothing could have been more characteristic of Abe's Babes than eating, laughing, and having fun. Through the year's activities, members had opportunities to meet new peo- ple and share new experiences. Such activities were the fall overnight at the YMCA, pot lucks, Advent Angels, Snow Week and Winter Formal. The cabinet (or the girls from rm. 222 ) was always busy plan- ning an activity for the whole group. Any Babe will admit that it is a good thing that Christmas tree stands and candy canes are around once a year. Thanks will always be due to Mrs. Tisue, Abe's Babes dedicated advisor. My knees hurt. Am I supposed to eat this?! Maybe next year I'll be captain. Perhaps the most remembered drill was the popular Supercal- ifragilisticexpialidocious. Be- sides marching with the band, the flags also pompomed at var- ious basketball and hockey games throughout the year. With only 20 sen- iors to welcome the new coach- ing staff of Stan Skjei, the young Bears played some of the best ball since the Lake Championship team of '73. Lincoln's record of 2-7 wasn't one to cheer about but the attitudes and determina- tion kept them in the games to the final whistle. They suf- fered through two overtime losses only to come back strongly against co-champion Armstrong in a very close game. The Bears of '76 were a team that didn't quit. This type of team will make Lin- coln's football program that of success in the future. The Lincoln hooters won the state soccer title for the second time in the 3 year history of the tournament. The bears cruised through the regular sea- son and won the Lake Conference Title with an 11-0-3 record. Defense and hustle were the bears' strong points. The scoring punch came from Captain Eric Paulsen, who scored 13 goals. The region final game was played against Benilde, with Chuck Engel sending the bears into the state tournament when he headed the game winner in the third overtime. The first game of the state tournament ended when Bob Schwirtz drilled in a goal late in the fourth overtime. In the state championship games, the bears played undefeated Moundsview. Lin- coln led 2-1 at the half, but Mounds- view tied it up late in the game. Five overtimes were played before the game was won on a penalty kick by Chris Pyle. All conference honors were won by Tom Russett, Mike Rydberg, Brian Budenski, Cap- tains Chris Pyle and Eric Paulsen. All-State honors were won by Goalie Mark Anderson and Half Back Chris Pyle. The boys came through with their 6th consecutive city champion- ship, tie for 4tn place in the conference, and went on to a 4th place finish in the sub- region meet at Lake Nokomis. The Bear Harries in a field of 21 teams finished 7 place in the region meet. These feats maybe attributed to each boy running on an average of 10 miles a day and as much as 800 miles in the year. Leading this year's team were seniors Brad Douglass, John Jacobson, and captain Reed Nelson. Also on the team were juniors Jeff Doer- ing, Drake Aaze, and Paul Schroeder, as well as Sopho- more Harry Schutte. The 1976 girl's Cross- Country team had an outstand- ing year as they ran their way to a 2nd place on the Lake Conference standings and 5 in region meet. Their 7-1 record show they were good contenders for the State meet. But were eliminated at the region by the state champions, Armstrong. They, along with coaches Greg Anklam and Chuck Peitso led the team to a regional rank of second and a state rank of 17th. The 200 medley relay squad of Laura Brackett, Diane Eppel, Nancy Wishart, and Pat- ti Geehan went to the state meet and did well, as did the 400 freestyle relay composed of Lisa Granoien, Patti Geehan, Kay Humphrey, and Lori Johnson who placed 11th in the state. Both Kay Humphrey and Lori Johnson swam the 100 freestyle with Lori earning a 7th place and Kay a 13th. Lori also earn- ed a 5th place in the 50 free- style. The managers, Tom Benda, Tom Hilton, Brad Wer- ner, and Bruce Laverty helped to make the 76-77 season a successful one with a second of 5 wins, 3 loses 0 ties and excellent placings in regional and state competitions. The girls competed against other high school teams in regular figure and routine meets as well as the D.G.W.S. state meet held in April. Coach Dube had his work cut out for him this year with varsity, junior varsity and sophomore squads. The team ended with a record of 5-9. This record does not reflect the total effort given by the girls. The fine efforts of sen- ior Kelly Kostick and captain Anita Nelson and of junior Diane Peterson, helped add the wins to the teams record. The team was stopped in re- gions by an excellent Edina East team. CONGRATULATIONS! The team was lead by the two co-captains, Jan Smith and Sue Rotzien. The team was also spirited on by Miss Athena, Anita Nelson. The squad owed its success to the drills which they constantly ran and to the constant effort put out by the players and the coaching staff. Although the players were hit with several the team as a minor injuries whole did exceptionally well. Congratulations on an excel- lent season. This year, the IM bas- ketball league involved six teams. The team had a seven win and five loss re- cord with a third place finish in the St. Francis Invitat- ional and a fourth place fin- ish in the Eisenhiwer Invita- tional. The Bear matmen in these two tournaments had five individuals take first place. All conference awards were earned by junior Phil Herbold and senior Dave Ar- buckle, both were undefeated in Lake Conference dual meets. Juniors Don Rasicot and Drake Aaze placed four- th in the regional meet at Cooper High. Also doing well this year were seniors Bruce Larson, Jeff Shand, Jim Hron, juniors Dave Scheer, Lance Nelson, Kelly McDougall, and Greg Eld- red. They all did a superb job for the team this season. This year's team was young, dominated by sophomores and freshmen and ended with a 2-6 record for the regular season. Strong individual perform- ances boosted the team to high region and state meet finishes. Throughout the season, many new freshmen and varsity records were set by this year's team. The loss of four outstanding seniors will be felt next year but most of the starting squad will be left intact. The team owes it's swimming skills to the continual lap swimming in the morning and after school. The team would like to thank all of those people who timed for them this year as well. The letter winning players com- prised a formidable team and one that was to end the season play in second place with an 11 win and 5 loss record against very good compe- tition. The Bears were not a very tall team as Lake Conference standards go but they wore good shooters and ball handlers and played with good teamwork. It was an exciting team and one that pushed the tall and tal- ented Robin's team (16-0) to a double overtime. Jay Hilbert, at center, was one of the most improved players from his junior year and played a steady game at center. Chris Pyle, a great one on one player, Mark Allen, good outshot and rebounder, and Mark The Leap- er Anderson played the forward spots. Bob Hutton, fine shooter, driver and clutch player, along with Tom Rus- sctt, great hustler defensive player and playmaker, and Todd Dilley, driver and good outshot, were the guards of the Bear Basketeers. These seven players formed the nucleus of this year's team. Thanks to the grad- uating seniors for the fine season and look forward to next year's edition of Bear basketball. Helping post this record were Senior Co- captains Jay Turkbas and Curt Johnson. Rounding out the other five places were Senior Brian Post and juniors Jim Brenner and Scott Strand. At the sectional meet Turkbas took top hon- ors and with the help of Post, Strand, Brenner and Johnson took the squad title. In the State meet Turkbas finished second with Post finishing seventh and Strand finishing fourteenth was good enough to win the squad title. The Lincoln girls' slalom squad, under the coaching of Jim Dimond, had a bit of a problem this year after loos- ing their three best skiers from last year. But in spite of this problem their record in conference was 4-7. The teams Co-captains were Sen- ior Patti Gibbs and junior Steph Peckham. Peckham was the top racer on the team. Lead by Bocky Forsmark, Julie Craven, Carrie Anderson, Kris Green, and Sandy Hero, the girls' cross- country skiing team upheld their con- ference record of 11 wins and 0 loses. Their rogion meet was also very suc- cessful. Becky Forsmark remained undefeated, taking first place, fol- lowed by teammates Julie Craven, Carrie Anderson, Kris Green, and Sa- ndy Hero placing 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. This meet sent five team members to state. Hero Becky placod 3rd overall and the rest of the girls placed in the top 14. In Ely, the site of the competition, the team fin- ished second behind the defending state champ Cloquet team. Highlights dur- ing the track season included Lincoln's 2-mile relay made up of Ken Patterson, Todd Dilley, Reed Nelson, and Bruce Porter, which was Lincoln's strongest relay. Highlighting the whole track season was Dan Sauffer's first-place finish in the high hurdles at the State Meet. A- nother Lincoln trackman com- peting in the State Meet was Dave Cleary, who took 5th place in the pole vault. With the help of returning State Champion Dan Sauffer and the combined effort of the return- ing sophomores and juniors from last year, the 1977 track team should do very well. 1CM Mike Anderson Larry Opatz Tim Friebe ■  .. iOMi Larry Opatz 1976 STATE GOLF CHAMPS 76 Proved to be a good year for the Lincoln golf team with a 7 win, 3 loss Lake Con- ference record. They also won the Regional title and the State High School Golf Tournement team title. Highlights of the season were Dave Gunderson, who took 5th place in Lake Con- ference and Law Opatz, who took 6th in the State Tourney in the individual section, which helped Lincoln gain the 5 strokes needed to win the State Title after the first day. Assisting the varsity squad were Bart Larson, Brian Johnson, Mike Anderson and Brad Johnson. 77 should be a good year with returning letterman Brad Johnson and Mike Anderson. The returning 'B' squad members will also have a chance to help the team try to defend their State Title. Because of boundary changes, Lincoln's faculty was enlarged to com- pensate for the additional stu- dents. The school received seventeen new teachers who taught in a variety of areas in- cluding Phy-Ed, Business, In- dustrial Arts, Music, Langu- ages, Science, Math and His- tory. They came here from many different places such as Ken- nedy, Jefferson, Armstrong, Oak Grove, Portland, and some came from out of state. Not to be out done, the reg- ular staff also contributed to the school year. They coached athletic activities, chaperoned dances, and helped greatly with student activities throughout the year. I am not mistaken in believing that we young peo- ple can do much more for nations with our simple and natural form of communications, than can old leaders of the world there eternal speeches:.. .UNITED in emotion ----at the first pep fest ; at the soccer state championship game: sharing, and simple things like.. .WHERE an unfamil- iar language is not so important, because feelings speak through us. For all of this, I thank my teachers, my friends, Jeff and the McFarlands family____and I thank God for the freedom that He gives us to communicate! I hope to see you in Mexico Dear Lincoln: In this fantastic year, Lincoln has been a very special part in my life. I want to thank you all for your help, who made my adaptation so easy. In such a short time you've made me feel I really belong to this school. Back in Spain a piece of Lincoln spirit will always remain with me. Arturo Alonso Gina Dear Lincoln: I really like to attend this school. Teachers, kids, and spirit are just great, school here is really fun compared to Switzerland. In America, you don't have the feeling of being a part of a huge un- personal machine tnat just gives people nothing else than scientific knowledge. Here everybody looks at you as an indiv- idual and you have control about your own learning process. I really like this country, because people are nice, the standard of living is high, and food is good (espec- ially ice cream). It is great to be an American, I can feel it. Thank you Greg Kley Dear Lincoln: I have really enjoyed my stay here, but it is very hard to express my feelings. I have met many people and I just like all of you. I have also enjoyed doing many different things-seeing snow for the first time Thank you, for all your cooperation and friendship. Your Friend Cheryl Arendsz 205 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR The individuals on the Bear staff have come together again, (as do different individuals each year), to produce a book that both students and staff may be proud of and grateful for the memories which are wrapped in the Bear . Even though I inherited the title of Editor-in-Chief almost all of the credit for the book must be given to the everpresent staff, especially the very faithful, and those people know who they are. We have tried to cover all aspects of Lincoln, yet Lincoln having such diversity, we have missed some areas and are sorry for these oversights. Errors are always committed in a yearbook, and we did our best to make the ‘77 Bear an exception, but we are human beings so errors have probably occured. I would like to personally thank Lincoln's staff for allowing us to miss class hours in order to complete deadlines. I also wish the entire student body the best of life for the future.
