The future is as distant as the sun, we may reach for it but never touch it. The rays fill our faces with warmth and we accept it as it is. Jane Walczak The Beginning It all began one sun shiny summer morning, when I awoke to find that it was no longer summer, for in fact it seemed that summer had indeed passed me by. Something in the air told me that morning, that school was about to begin. Maybe it was the smell of oatmeal on the stove, the sound of Dad cursing at the school lunch prices, or the feeling of vultures in my stomach. Yes, I knew it had to have been those vultures. As I was wisked out the door in the general direction of last years bus stop, I stopped to think, “where was last years bus stop? For it seemed that the bus schedule had not yet arrived a week before school started as promised. I high-tailed it up the stairs of the bus and somewhere found an empty seat. Only later was 1 to realize mine was the first stop. As I sat contemplating the year to come, 1 thought of the com- forting message my mother had given to me, Be brave, and face that school head on.” So I did, and it hurt. I entered the school door cautiously an. and as I walked in I was quickly snatched into the high speed pace of the school. Students, teachers, every- one hurrying around like they didn’t know what was going on. I soon found out that the hours started to drag on just like they had in pre- vious years. I knew that if 1 could make it through the rest of my World History class, 1 would have it made. Twenty minutes later, 1 was off again. That didn’t last long though because I got stuck in a traffic jam. Toward the end of the day. I began to wonder why all of those registration papers said to be sure to bring my student I.D. card the first day. I brought it, as told and my bus driver didn’t want to see it, no one wanted to identify me! My I.D. got stuck on the shelf in my locker, where it will lay, until I can find the Library. I was glad to hear the bell. Now just two hours of marching band practice, and I can call it a day. Till tomorrow where at the same time and place, those vultures will once again be flying. Cheryl Capron types Intensely during her third hour class. Mark Thomas uses the microscope during class. Our principal, bums on the sophomores. 4 Sophomores Even sophomores take time out to talk between classes. If she puts that stuff on my hand I'll scream. Rock and Roll is here to st3y. Hmmm . . . seems to be working now. It is true that guys have learned to cook. Now what did they say that was called? Now everybody look over here. Sophomores 5 it was my brilliant ideal Now this is the life. Halfway There I stand in the middle. The newness that was once, is no more. I think of the years completed not as a summing up, but as a graph of a process still going on. A past filled with growing and learning stands behind me. Before me; my final year in high school. I know that we as juniors, have just begun to touch upon a life that will open the gateway to many forms of change and opportunity. That everything learned is the key, and whatever still can be used will be. I haven’t set complete goals. I have reached no conclusions. With so much left to understand, I await my final years with fear and hope. Because the days pass so quickly, and time is hard to grasp. I feel that this year was my most imponant year. Another hour another class. Now this is the correct way to do it. Kathy Lande and Bill Bohn relax during break. You've got to be kidding! Lisa Ballstadt studies for English. Sitting in classes Is a very good pastime. 6 Juniors Speak no evil, hear no evil and see no evil. Clast doesn't have to be that boring. O.K. now say cheese. Patti under glass. Boy. did you see that last play? Here I come. Juniors 7 Carrie shows how tough it is. Now Isn't that answer over here? I really hope this is what we're supposed to be doing. The Beginning of the End Twelve years! Ecstatic, traumatic, tremendous, tearful terrific years. The fulfillment of our hopes and dreams of youth. GRADUATION! A new beginning for us all. New people to meet new experiences to encounter, and new memories to make. FREEDOM! No more strings binding us. No more regimentation from parents and teachers. We are adults by law, expected to take the responsibility for our actions good and bad. APPREHENSIONS! After twelve years of school are we truly ready to face life objectively? How different is our school environment from the real world? Will our dealings with each other now help us to understand strangers? Will the knowledge we have acquired carry us through all the trials we will face? Are we able to cope with the frustrations and disappointments in the world? CONFIDENCE! With unending faith in ourselves hope in our future, and understanding from those with whom we deal with we will make it! OUR SENIOR YEAR! The end and the beginning. Seniors 9 Seventy Six fie celeGration of the Girth of our Nation 3or two-hundred years our country has Seen the United States of America. Our ancestors had the foresight and wisdom to see that we had to he “united states”; that the only way a country will ever he sucessful is if if is united towards one cause, “ohe first cause, that we as a nation supported, was freedom from Brifians ’ rule, freedom has always, therfore, Geen extremely important to us as a people Jreedom today, we so preciously call individualism. 10 8icent nniol Seventy-Six We are lucky to be living during the bicentennial celebration. It will someday be an important part of our history. I hope it helps more to unite our country. Lori Buklid 11 When I think about the bicentennial, I am reminded that our country had survived for 200 years. Sure, we’ve made many mistakes; but now at least we are mature enough to realize them. A lot of people are trying to make money off of our celebration, but I won’t buy junk - my celebration will be to contribute to the future of our nation. I am an American! A1 Galazen 10 As I see it, the 200th birthday of our country is exploited by businessmen. Commercialism takes over where the individual spirit of America is left off. The American is bombarded this ”76” by buttons, trinkets, gadgets, stickers, posters and postcards. More emphasis is put on buying these products than getting the 1976 spirit across. We should be thinking more of the point of this bicentennial than of the cheap commerical overtones that these businessmen create. Who would be crowned King and Queen of Lincoln's Homecoming Festivities? To add to the excitement of Homecoming, coronation was placed during the school day. This enabled all of Lincoln's students to share in the coronation ceremony and the joyous moment. Last years reigning King and Queen, Dave Albers and Jill Smiler, crowned Ric Everett and Margaret Dunne Lincoln's Homecoming royalty. I was really surprised when I won Homecoming. I never expected it to happen. Being Homecoming King was an honor and I was happy to be chosen. ’' Ric Everett I was honored to be Lincoln's Homecoming Queen of 1975. That special moment will often flash back in my mind and I wish I could relive it all over again. But it was a once in a lifetime moment and a memory I will never forget.' ’ Maggie Dunne Pictures taken, congratulations made and butterfies gone, the royal court was taken to the Chart House for dinner and more pictures by the yearbook staff. Halls were flooded with paper branches, and feathers, as homerooms attempted to illustrate the homecoming slogan, Beary the Falcon's feathers”. Judged by members of Lincoln's maintenance staff and office workers, the top door prize” (a shake for each student) was awarded to Mrs. Villela’s first hour Spanish class, poor Mr. Hornig!! During the advisor period, a special pepfest added enthusiasm to the student body. The Bruinettes performed another unique, innovative routine to Evil Ways.” The varsity cheerleaders led the students in cheers for the coming game. Rocky” Elton followed in close second, displaying his famous Viking paraphernalia for the first time this year. Of course, the Sophomore cheerleaders received their share of paper airplanes, making only partial fools of themselves. Sixth hour, the marching band paraded around the halls, to conclude our annual homecoming traditions. The mighty Rocky lead cheer at the pepfest. Betsy Hartman enjoys the pepfest. Homecoming 17 Whispering Winds On Friday, September 24, a hundred couples gathered together to share their excitement at the end of the Homecoming festivities. The band, Moonglow, provided music for Lincoln's students from 9:30 to 11:30, playing a variety of music from the big band era. The couples danced around the center court, which was occupied by the king and queen. The students looked quite stylish in their attire and their enthusiasm helped to make Lincoln's Homecoming a success. Kathy Jacobsen and her date. Why aren't you dancing? Tina Picpcr and Mike Benz. Students were dressed in overalls, cutoffs, long underwear, and other tattered concoctions. The band, ’’Goldy and the Barrymen,” played a very large range of music including polkas, slow type, and fast rock. Some of the attractions at the dance were sack races, a shooting gallery, pictures, and of course the hitching booth. The prices of a wedding varied, with the thirty cent wedding being the deluxe, which featured an all expense paid trip behind Honeymoon Rock. ’' The excitement shown on Friday, November 21, made this year's Sadie Hawkins a dem good, knee-slappin' event! What is your job preparing you for? My job is not preparing me for any job in the future, but it is helping me to be more responsible and it helps me to manage money. Why are you working? I am working to help pay for my clothes and for my own personal spending money. Rhonda Matsuura Senior, Dayton’s Pharmacy. Is it difficult for you to go to school and work at the same time? No, one learns to budget the time one has around their activities. What is your job preparing you for? A nursing career, plus learning to work efficiently with others. Paul Hart Senior, Master at Prime Time. What is your job preparing you for? I plan to be a chef when I graduate. If at all possible I will train at Hennepin Area Vocational Technical Institute. Do you feel you are getting a reasonable amount of money for what you are doing? I get $2.15 an hour for being a supervisor and head cook, and I don’t feel, with all the responsibility, $2.15 is adequate. Marilyn Mellenbruch Senior, Dietary Aide at Maple Nursing Home. Is it difficult for you to go to school and work at the same time? Yes, sometimes. It always seems that when there is a basketball game or a football game that I want to go to, it always seems that I have to work. As for my school work, I don’t have as much time for studying, but I seem to be doing okay in my classes. 24 Job Opinion Carol Holm Senior, Waitress at Lemon Tree Southtown Center. What does your job mean to you? Debbie Benites Senior, Swimming teacher at the Y.W.C.A. What does your job mean to you? VmLm t It means meeting new people everyday, taking over a great deal of responsibility and trying to please every customer so that I make money in tips. A waitress doesn’t usually get very much money so she must make money from tips. The best way to do this is to please the What is this job preparing you for? This job prepares me by teaching me to work with people, and how to take criticism, and to be responsible. It means teaching and watching children of all ages, I especially like 2-3 year olds. I learn how kids learn and how they develop mentally as well as physically, by the way we teach them at the Y. We find new methods from parents also. It also is better qualifying me to work independently and to learn how to associate with kids of all ages. M Mike Benz Senior, Works at Town Drug. Do you find it hard to work and go to school at the same time? Diane Teeters Senior, Hostess at Henrici’s. Is it difficult to go to school and work at the same time? y A conflict always arises between work and school. It always seems when I have a test in class, I have to work the night before. But I always seem to get by. A bad grade in a class is usually from personal neglect to study. I think with many jobs, students find it relatively easy to handle. Teenagers have to work to survive in their future excursions. Why am I working? I need money and the experience. The money for transportation, personal usage, and savings. Experience so I am ready to handle other jobs in the future without complete ignorance. No, I have found that spacing out my time works well. My senior class load is not too difficult. My classes don't really require that much studying. As far as not being able to participate in school activities, I have found no problems. I am president of Abes Babes, I work on the yearbook staff. I can usually work activities around my schedule at Henrici's. I was able to attend all of Lincoln's hockey and soccer games. Hockey and soccer are the only varsity sports which I am really interested in. The only disadvantage in going to school and working, is that I don’t spend much time with my family and my bedroom floor hasn't been seen since September 3. Job Opinion 25 Dear Lincoln Dear Lincoln: During my year at Lincoln I made many friends. I really think that Lincoln is a great school because the board, the teachers, and the students are sensational. Thank you for what I learned not only during my classes but also between classes, after school or during the school events. Love from Belgium Andree Markus My Friends at Lincoln: I must say that my year with you has been the greatest experience in my life! You have made me feel welcome in your school and in your community. Please call me when you come to Munich - I will try to help you to know MY country. Aufwiedersehen, Markus Auer Lan Andree In April of 1975 Lan Nugen arrived by plane in Bloomington, from Siagon South Viet Nam. Lan came to the U. S. with her brother who was a war pilot and she is living with her sister and brother-in-law and their daughter. Lan and her family are sponsored by Hillcrest Methodist Church. Lan enjoys living in the U. S. and going to Lincoln. She also thinks the people at Lincoln are very friendly. 26 A.F.S. and Lan Germany Our cheerleaders have changed appearance. Oh - we're on next. Pep Fests Remember those half hour periods in the middle of the day when everyone got together in the gym to watch the Pep Fests? The first one was the traditional bum on sophomores pep fest, which juniors and seniors thoroughly enjoyed. Diapers and pacifiers were tossed at them, and Dr. Stever even got in the act. At different times throughout the year the bruinettes and cheerleaders traded places for the day, cheerleaders became elves, and sophomores, juniors, and seniors had several races, (the seniors won all of them, of course). The cheerleaders spent hours practicing skits to perform for the school, and the bruinettes worked hard to show us new dances. After the Battle Cry, a tribute to the teams, and the school song, everyone was ready and in high spirits for that night’s games. Show me tome spirit! Pep Fest skits are getting better. Victory lor our teams! Oh! I love you Bear! Is this what goes on in the gym over vacation? Pep Fest 27 Li'l Abner On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 13, 14, and 15 the Lincoln auditorium was transformed into the Hillbilly town of Dogpatch U. S. A. There was revealed the Saga of Daisy Mae (Jo Fischer) and Abner Yokum (Berk Hancer) who were trying to save their town and, in Daisy Mae’s case, catch a husband. They and other Dogpatch inhabitants tried to convince Artis T. Fonsdale (Cindy Kiecker) to call off the atomic bomb by proving they were a necessary town. Their necessary items ranged from the crankcase of a model T Ford to a round trip ticket to the birthplace of Elvis Presley, but in the end it was Mammy Yokems (Darla Lundy) Yokom berry tonic that saved the day. The audience seemed to enjoy the play and the cast received two standing ovations, one on opening night and the other Saturday night. The directors of the play were Mrs. Stainer and Mr. G. Barry. The student director was Steve Basiago, and Halley Leffler choreographed all dances in the play. Members of the East practice for the play. Really? You got to be kidding 1 This here's my pal, the World's Dirtiest Wrestler. Mammy and Pappy Yokum fight it out. I'm sure there's a penny around herd Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! And over here we have the National Lincoln Landmark! 28 li'l Abner You can’t get away now! Daisy Mac making eyes at Abner. Well, here's Daisy Mac! Of course Daisy finds me irresistable! You mean this time I’m really getting married! Li l Abner 29 Contiary to popular belief, Bears do not hibernate. History was one of two courses Juniors were required to take. They were given a choice between World History, Area Studies, Anthropology, or Global Perspectives, according to their interests. Not only facts about other countries, but also the ancient Romans, Greeks and other civilizations were discussed, also current events took up a part of the Junior Year. In the Senior year students were required to take Sociology, Economics, Political Science or Contemporary Perspectives. The course consisted of learning about social problems, our economic situation, and a discovery of our inward selves. In another area, classes were held in which students learned about death, futurism, and their self values. It's that funny. We needed to know that for the test. Work) I'm allergic to It. What? One form was through the advisor- advisee program. The purpose of this program was to broaden and personalize the communication process between the administration and students in regard to classes and colleges for future quarters and years. Extracurricular activities also helped students broaden personal interests. During Human Relations Day speakers came and each student had the opportunity to listen to someone of different ethnic groups. Another aspect of communications is foreign languages. The languages offered at Lincoln were French, German, Spanish, and Russian. The curriculum included volleyball games between the foreign language classes and a few sample tastes of foreign foods. Plays, novels, short stories, and poems were all under discussion in the English Department. Research papers, themes, films and tests were among different forms of learning devices used by the English teachers. Another hard day In Project English. Boy. that joke really kills met Oh. I see. Hours and hours of street marching in the blistering cold of December, the band packed up for Florida on December 26 for ten days of sun and fun. While most of us were sitting by fireplaces watching the Orange Bowl football game on television, the Lincoln Band members sat in the Florida sunshine and watched the game in the stadium. They were one of fourteen bands to march in the Orange Bowl Parade on Dec. 31. They were also guest band at Walt Disney World. With crates and crates of Florida oranges and grapefruit the band gave many Bloomington families a taste of the Florida citrus crops while raising money to finance their trip. Oh I'm so sick of this! Events of the Year A yearbook - not just records, pictures and memories of high school, but a product of a hard working advisor and staff. The new advisor Mr. Larrys Krueger and editor Cindie Enright helped to bring about a change in the appearance and meaning of the BEAR. The incorporation of colored pages and more emphasis on student life brought about the cohesiveness of the book. Living was the theme chosen and the book is based around living and life at Lincoln. Many late nights and What do I have to do now! A look of content. long weekends were spent turning total confusion into a stable and energetic staff. All work and no play couldn’t really be said, for many new friendships were formed, everywhere from staff meetings to selling ads. By continually working with class pictures and candids, the section editors, photographers and staff felt as if they knew everyone in school. The events of this year at Lincoln were pieced together slowly, but surely. With all the deadlines, despairing moments and long nights out of the way, the BEAR arrived, in full print, to the joy of all those who worked so hard to make it a memorable book. The first loss came early in the season when they lost to Eisenhower, 1 to 2. This, however, was followed by a fifteen game winning streak which was ended in the finals of the regional play-offs, when they lost a heartbreaker to Edina West, 2 to 1. The teams success can be attributed to their outstanding depth and overall team balance and the fine performance of many individuals. There wasn’t enough Left to finish All that we started here. But, it’s time to start anew. To tears we give way - Tears of and sorrow - Tears for yesterday - And even tomorrow - Your future lies before you Friends, I will remember you Like a shining path of snow. Think of you, pray for you. Be careful how you tread And when another day is through For every step will show. I'll still be friends with you. - Bill Danoff - - Taffy Nivert - Hulship is a horizon - which ids whenever we approach it. -E. R. Hazlip - The best of life is good communication, and the greatest success is perfect understanding between sincere people. For the children and the flowers are my sisters and my brothers. Their laughter and their loveliness will clear a cloudy day. Like the music of the mountains and the colors of the rainbow. They’re a promise of the future and a blessing for today. - John Denver - Seniors Do a Number In The Gym Seri i c 133 Juniors Class of '77 President - -Jar Vice President - Secretary — - Be; Treasurer Despite these tensions school went on to a successful year. The grade distributions were well above average. The faculty carried on their classes ’ 'business as usual. ’' There have been no tears or tantrums and our faculty rose above these uncontrollable forces and graduated students to bigger and better things.
