Lincoln is just a building, an empty shell. Without people, it has no purpose, it helps no one, it does nothing, it has no use. Cm 7 f i 4 • 5 Until the People Come Each fall, people come, filling the halls with voices and laughter and sound. Lincoln awakens to fill their needs; it provides a place to learn, to do new things. People change Lincoln from a cold building to a warm, friendly place. 6 7 Lincoln Is Students Students are the largest part of Lincoln. They come to work, to learn about people, ideas, and new ways of doing things. They come to build and create, to improve old ways and to change old ideas. 8 9 Ploying . . . Students come to meet others, to make new friendships and strengthen old ones. They come to be with others like themselves. to have fun and to talk with them. They participate in sports and club activities. 10 II Relaxing . . . Students relax from the dizzying pace. They try to get away from the pressures and problems of school. They look for quiet. for places where they can forget the everyday difficulties of school life. 12 13 Lincoln Is Students Helping Others ... . 14 To Leorn and Understand Other people are part of Lincoln, too. Teachers. counselors, librarians help the students with different kinds of problems and questions. Students help each other to understand and to tolerate the views and ideas of others. i 16 17 Faculty Kept All Running Smoothly One outstanding trait of Lincoln's administra- tion is their sincere interest in the student body. Mr. Hanson, Mr. Lee, Mr. Karbo, and Mr. Jones always put the best interests of the stu- dents first. Mr. Hanson's never-ending job in- cludes the administration of the policies set by the Board of Education. He was responsible for the organization of curriculum and faculty. Mr. Lee was in charge of scheduling classes and was the advisor to the Student Council and the Senior Class. Mr. Karbo and Mr. Jones handled discipline and attendance. Top: Mr. Raymond Hanson, Principal, gave the stu- dents a voice in school policies. Loft: Friendly Mr. Daniel Jones, Assistant Principal, helped straighten out many hardened criminals. Right: Assistant Principal Mr. Russell Lee worked many hours with the computer. Bottom: Til get on it right away, Chief. Assistant Principal Mr. Michael Karbo followed up crises in the school. 18 Board of Education Members were: Stand- ing: Dr. Robert Rainey. Mr. Luther Ford. Mr. Raymong Glumack, Mr. Fred Atkin- son. Superintendent. Seated: Dr. Harley Racer. Mr. James Kempf, Board President: Mr. Earl Fischer. 19 and Assistance They Gave Advice Each counselor contributed many long hours guiding his students. Much help was needed, as the new quarter system produced many confused schedules. Administering and interpreting tests, offering advice, and listening to students’ problems with a sincere interest were just a few of the ways that the counselors showed the students they cared. Always in a hushed atmosphere, the librarians were prepared to answer the students’ questions. Without them, many students would not have finished their reports, assignments, or term papers on time, or received their overdue-book notices. Lincoln stu- dents always knew that the smile of the librarians welcomed them. Right: Can you imagine 300 students in a biology class?' Mr. Schuman asked Miss Pinten. Below: Miss Buller listened to students' problems. Mrs. Roleff was the counselors' secretary. Middle: Mr. Daffer and Mr. Redmond were pillars of strength. Bottom: I knew we'd get publicity if we met here, Mr. Tesmer confided to Miss Carson. 20 21 Right: Pete Richardson was well-known in his work of supervising the halls. Middle: Someone took my lomon drops, sighed Mr. Ehli, the reading consultant. Special Personnel Offer Services Many specialized persons offered their services to Lincoln. Teacher aides and other personnel added their talents to help both the students and the other faculty mem- bers. An audio-visual department, special education, supervision, special counselling, reading efficiency, and attendance record- keeping were provided by these persons. Fred Miller, city-school coordinator. Mr. Sievers, the school psychologist. 22 Left: Mr. Peterson and Mrs. Scott were amazed at the number of orders for Fanny Hill in the audio-visual department. Below: Mr. Schmidt, the social worker at Lincoln. Me? Matchinig pennies? Mr. Hultine asked incredulous- ly. He worked in the attendance office. Mrs. Melum taught the special educa- tion classes. They Gove Bondages and Information Never a day went by when Mrs. Krom- minga’s services were not needed. She was called upon to care for illnesses ranging from broken knees to headaches and spring fever. The clerks at Lincoln had the responsibility of running the high school office. They took announcements, gave information, answered questions, collected money, sold tickets, had patience, and smiled. Top: This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home ... Middle left: Mrs. Kromminga, nurse, gave advice on med- ical matters. Middle right: Mrs. Frank con- fided, Well, don't tell any- one. but ... Bottom left: Mrs. Kromminga, may I have some aspirins? Mrs. Matychuk pleaded. Bottom right: The WHAT is on fire?? Mrs. Kritzeck won- dered. They Kept LHS Clean and Fed The custodians worked throughout both day and night to keep Lincoln in shining condition. Although often taken for granted, the services of the custodians were always in demand. The cooks had the task of preparing nutritious lunches for 2400 students each day. They made the lunch hour interesting, as no two lunches were identical. The cooks also prepared and served breakfast and after-school snacks. Top left: Mr. Vober, head custodian, listens to a problem. Bottom loft: Mrs. Ry- man, head cook, pre- pared foods in addition to supervising the rest of the lunch. 25 Moth Relates to Many Areas 29 30 The study of geometry demands concentration. Geometry is the branch of mathematics dealing with points, lines, and planes. Students studied properties of two dimen- sional figures, circles and spheres, analytic graphs, and volumes and solids. Higher Algebra students encountered logarithms, imaginary numbers, progressions, probability, conic sections, polynomials, and boredom. This course was a necessity for those who wished to continue work in scientific areas. 31 Mathematical analysis classes soon discovered that the course was actually an introduction to calculus. Much time was spent working with polynomial, trigonometric, expo- nential, and logarithmic functions. With the adoption of the new quarter system, students found an opportunity for a greater variety of courses. Linear algebra classes emphasized operations with matrices and determinants. Students taking probability and statistics tackled the game theory, Poisson distribution, and hy- pothesis testing and correlation. Computer programming students learned to operate a teletype unit which was connected to a computer shared by various businesses and schools. Trigonometry is the study of angles and their functions. The course included the solution of triangles, identities, and sine and cosine laws which are valuable in the study of Physics and other sciences. 32 Mr. LeRoy Martinson Mr. Loyal Younggren Mr. Kenneth SangreneMr. John Ludvigsen Phys. Ed. Is a Pleosont Diversion From Daily Routine The President's All-America Team. Would you believe the lettermen of Podunlc U? 33 Okay. Which one of you wise guys put flubber on my tennys?! a - Physical education classes are required of all sophomores. A wide range of activities can be elected which includes soccer, gymnastics, volleyball, archery, basketball, tennis, and golf. A health unit is included which attempts to develop attitudes and responsible behavior relevant to dating, social behavior, and drugs. The advanced program in physical education is open to juniors and seniors who have demonstrated superior per- formance in physical education. Course work is designed to increase knowledge and skills in organizing and officiat- ing athletic events and in demonstrating training tech- niques that improve athletic performance. 35 Languages Contribute to a Well-Rounded Education German students became familiar with the geography, history, and the people of Ger- many as well as with increasingly complex dialogue, literature, and grammar. Films and skits were used to liven up the students’ interest in the language. Verdammt nochmal. wo 1st denn Berlin?! 36 37 Your Fritos or your life! Because the cultural heritage of mankind rests in language, the ultimate goal of language study is the better understanding of a country and its cul- ture. Through the five foreign languages offered at Lincoln, students are made aware of the areas in the world where people use the language and are acquainted with the everyday life in the coun- tries involved. Russian, Latin, French, Spanish, and German classes study the literature, music, art, history, and scientific achievements of the countries being studied. Levels I and II develop the ability to communicate in the chosen language. Acquiring fluency involves building skills in the four basic areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Recordings and oral drills are used for oral practice, while reading and writing involves grammar study and outside reading in higher levels. Even if the student elects not to continue in a language, he has gained a more cosmopolitan outlook than he previously had. “This'll never top the flying nun! 38 Mrs. Conleth Sorrier© Mrs. Mary Stewart Mrs. Dorothy Jackson Mrs. Agnos Loe Miss Barbara Rinehart Home Economics Is Preparing for Domestic Life No. these are NOT baby booties! 40 Courses in foods and clothing construction are the main offerings in Home Arts. Foods classes range from classes in foreign cookery for girls to intro- ductory classes for boys. Girls' clothing classes offer a challenge to the beginner in basic construc- tion classes as well as the advanced seamstress in tailoring classes. Special courses in home design, fabrics and textiles, and household management are also offered. 41 Art Incorporates Utility, Beauty, and Originality Mr. Jerome Kyllo Mrs. Betty Brenner Art stressed the freedom of creative expression in a number of medias. Each of the three art rooms catered to a particular dimension. In one room, three dimensional work—pottery, sculp- ture, wood carving, jewelry—was created. An- other room produced two dimensional work such as painting, drawing, and collages. The third room was devoted to textiles. Here stu- dents dyed fabric, designed patterns for cloth, or weaved rugs. Each quarter the students moved to a different room to attempt new creative expression. 43 Social Studies Promote Responsible Citizenship Mr. Thomas Mr. Joseph Mr. Marshall Mr. Robert Howden Hutton Carlson Normoyle The Normoyle Doll: Wind him up and he runs into the wall. Modern problems attempts to expand student awareness, understanding, and active concern for problems relating to economics, government, and sociology. Sociology classes discussed problems of minorities, social pathology, and family life. Economics stressed the role of an individual in our econ- omy, while the government course examined the modern American political system. The international relations course is designed to develop stu- dent understanding of other societies and their cultures, a sense of responsibility toward the American role in world affairs, and an awareness of the realities of international prob- lems. Different forms of government were evaluated during the year. The comparative government series includes a study of the evolution of political thought, definition of governmental systems, and an examination of the dominant government forms of the twentieth century. Theory was contrasted with changes and developments within nations in recent years. There must be a way to use my teddy bear as an exemption! The American history course is organized on the basis of problems which exemplify the relationship of the past to the present. Units of study include political leadership, reform in America, minority groups, Ameri- can values and the Supreme Court, and the causes of war. Students learned more about their own back- ground through a research paper on the family genealogy. World history is a survey of man's triumphs and tragedies from the beginnings of history to the present. Emphasis is on Western Civilization, but the course includes a study of Asia, Africa, and Latin America and their transition from traditional to modern societies. Current events are also covered to give the student an idea of how the past and present are re- lated. Mr. John Mr. Homer Mr. Donald Lynch Anderson Kuzma 47 Sex Education is not for everyone. Anthropology is the study of the races, characteristics, and social patterns of man- kind. Areas of study include physical an- thropology, a study of the evolution of man with emphasis on the cultural develop- ment of primitive man, the great trans- formation, and the agricultural revolution which set the stage for the emergence of civilization. A study of contemporary pat- terns of culture emphasizing tribal groups is an integral part of the course. Students concerned about the world-wide problems of pollution found conservation a valuable course. The class studies two types of natural resources, the renewable and the nonrenewable. Methods of preser- vation are also discussed. 48 No. I don't want a walnetto!! Mr. Burnham Elton Mr. Gene Wise Students with an interest in a specific area of the world could elect the Area Studies program. Areas covered in the course are Western Europe after the fall of Rome, the Soviet Union and early Russia. China, and India. The diverse cultures of the areas are used as the focal point of concentra- tion on the present. The European historical movements course is de- signed for seniors who have a strong interest in history and wish to acquire an in-depth understand- ing of our contemporary world through a critical reappraisal of the last two centuries. Emphasis is placed upon social, economic, religious, scientific, and artistic movements. 49 Industrial Arts Provide Practical Skills 50 Industrial arts courses provide boys with practical training in all phases of shop. Courses are offered in the general areas of automotive technology, drafting, graphic arts, electricity, metals, and woods. All courses include a research project assigned by the instructor. Through the industrial arts program, the student can learn such useful skills as auto and radio repair, wood- working, and bookbinding. 51 Electricity and Mechanical Drawing Combine Knowledge and Creativity Now I know what's wrong. The hamster escaped! 52 Now if we could only -think of something for it to represent ... Printing Harmonizes Function and Design Mr. Larrys Krueger 53 Science Is the Art of Discovery and Interpretation 54 Under Mr. Pintozzi's ever-watchful eye and his oracle's corroboration. Physics classes delved into the physical world of man. Much of the year was spent determining the nature of light as a wave or a particle. Using such devices as Slinlcies to demonstrate the properties of waves, and human chains to observe static electricity, students examined basic properties of light, sound, and motion. Physical Science is a course designed for stu- dents who desired more background in the basic principles of physics and chemistry. In Space Science, students learned some of the science involved in the conquest of space. Much in- dividual lab work was performed. Mr. Orville White Mr. Robert Pintoni 55 The main topic of study in biology classes was ecology—the relationship between living things and their environment. Micro-organisms, cell structure, and functions were covered, as well as genetics and animal behavior patterns. Chemistry is the science which deals with the composition of the universe. Chemistry classes stressed scientific investigation in the labora- tory. The student's own results were used to help develop an understanding of fundamental scientific theories. Students anticipating nursing, medical, or dental careers found Human Physiology a helpful subject. The course deals primarily with the function of the various systems of the human body. Topics studied included the muscular and skeletal systems, the nervous system, and the sense organs. Psychology is the study of animal and human be- havior. Through a study of human development, students found that each personality is unique. Drugs, hypnosis, and advertising were included in a study of awareness and action. Many opportuni- ties for study occurred where psychology blended with other sciences. 58 A 59 Cooperative Training Students Learn Through Experience Did you hear the one about the traveling salesman?' 60 Mr. Andrew Holland Miss Virginia Roden A special program at Lincoln is the co- operative occupational training program in which qualified seniors participate. Stu- dents work part-time and receive on-the- job instruction during the afternoon. They are paid the going wage rate, while earn- ing two elective credits toward gradua- tion requirements. Training includes mer- chandising and management techniques, business procedures, buying, selling, and storage. An alternate program allows students to remain in school while learn- ing practical business skills and manage- ment methods. 61 Our Band Has Soul PEP BAND I AND II: Row I: S. Graham, C. Jackson, D. Mrs. Margaret Palm Mr. Edward Ehli 75 78 Lincoln High School Presents — “The Boyfriend” The Boyfriend was frivolous, frolicking fun straight from the 1920's. Baubles, bangles, and beads helped make the four sell-out performances a smashing suc- cess. Penny Perkins portrayed Polly while Roxanne LaHaise doubled as the same. Debbie Wilson and Gwen Pederson astounded audiences as Masie. When all was said and done, there was really only one ... BOYFRIEND! 79 Behind the Scenes Actors get applause, but often no credit is given to those behind the scenes. Many students spend long, hard hours building sets, developing new techniques in make-up, sewing costumes, and gathering props. All of these people contribute to a mem- orable performance. 80 Members are: Lynn Christenson. Jan Collison. Roxanne LaHaise. Karen Leffler. Nancy Miller. Ron Richard. Patty Widdund. Debbie Wilson. Chris Wolfram. Thespians Are Versatile Actors and actresses who are members of Thespians are sure to have much experience in the theater. To be initiated into the Thespian Society, each person must have had at least one part in a play and have worked at least 100 hours on three different crews. Each member has a well- rounded knowledge of the the- ater and drama. 81 Here Come the One Acts Three On a Bench Junior Roxann La- Haise directed the comedy, Three On - A - Bench. Homecoming activities got off to a rousing start. The real activities began Thursday night with the crowning of Kelly O'Brian and Marcia Johnson as Homecoming King and Queen. Friday's lunch hour found the royalty being treated to a special luncheon. That evening, in the warmth of a late Indian summer, the Bears played to a 20-6 loss against St. Cloud Tech. Homecoming activties came to an end as couples danced to the music of The Light. 85 86 87 Walk Together Talk Together . . . Active was the word for this year's A.F.S. club. Each month an activity was planned. The annual Trim the Tree party at Christmastime saw exchange students from Minneapolis and suburbs gathered at Lincoln. Exchange students Vicky Ortega, from Paraguay, and Martin Bornemann, from Germany, were always interesting additions to the activities, as was Pres- ident Debbie Reynolds, who spent the pre- vious summer in Australia. Lincoln’s A.F.S. gave students a part in the push for in- ternational peace and understanding. 88 Smile! I think he's taking our picture. Roely Robert Pollock The challenges of life and youth were his to conquer—be it the problems of humanity that concerned him so greatly; the quest for knowledge into which he delved with such success: the world of books he entered with eagerness and enthusiasm; the thrill of a wind-tossed sail on a white capped lake: the awesomeness of a snow-veiled ski slope: or the mysteries of the paths of nature down which he loved to hike. These challenges and others held his concern and interest; and yet he still took time to notice the little things that are too often overlooked in today's chaotic society. Thus, he stood out as an individual. His satisfaction was a job always well done, and the success ne achieved was ac- cepted in his quiet way with a humble heart. May we. as his friends and classmates, continue to carry on for him the things that he had to leave undone. Let us accept the challenges of our youth as he did his—with courage and conviction, moral integrity, and steadfost purpose—and may we realize the value and wonders of the precious gift of life itself. 213 Hopes, Thrills Disappointment Front row, left to right: Coach Tom Randall, Tim Wolfram, Gary Miller. In the finals, a tight defensive struggle, our Bears were defeated by 4 points. Overall the team compiled an out- standing record which gave its' supporters much to cheer about. Coach Hutton was pleased by the performance of the entire team, but as always certain individuals stood out. Forwards Bill Stevens (1st team All-Conference) and Scott Finley (2nd team All-Conference) gave outstanding service. Guard Dave Free provided the needed outside shooting and developed into a fine playmaker. Guards Greg Karbo and Rick Thompson gave the team a quickness needed to break the full court press. Forwards Terry Martin and Pete Van Nice helped round out one of the finest teams in LHS history. Reserve forward Dave John- son showed a drive and determination which should provide a strong nucleus for 1970. Unlike most seasons when the phrase, Wait till next year can be used to help soothe some wounds, next year does not look too bright. This year's team was heavy with seniors, and the opening of Jefferson High next September will draw off many promising JV and Sophomore team members. Regardless of next year, however, we want to thank Coach Hutton, his assistants, and especially the team for the thrills and hopes they gave us all. 217 Scores Winona Kennedy St. Louis Park Cooper Mound Richfield Wayzata White Bear Lake Robbinsdale Minnetonka Edina Hopkins Kennedy St. Louis Park Cooper Mound Richfield Wayzata Minnetonka Edina Robbinsdale We They 60 47 68 46 71 46 47 34 55 42 64 43 64 49 77 64 39 44 44 50 67 55 53 49 59 35 43 33 46 47 58 44 67 41 84 56 72 47 51 45 33 37 Terry Martin drives for a layup. 218 BEARS BEARS • EARS 12 Scott Finley makes a shot. Overall the team had a 7-4 won loss rec- ord. One of the season's high points came when our Bears growled to a first place finish at the Winona Tournament. A second place at the St. Francis Tournament also brought honors to the team. Strong individual performances came from Jerry Dexter who quali- fied for the State Tournament, and Craig Anderson, Steve Boe, and John Lloyd who gained All-Confer- ence honors along with Jerry. 221 Front row sitting, left to right: Tom Steele. I love you, too Skiers Did Well and That Snow Joke Because of the efforts of the slalom squad, the ski team had a successful season. Injuries to the jumping squad cancelled the efforts of the two senior jumpers. During the conference season, the slalom squad lost only to Edina and placed second in the conference. The young team, mainly sophomores and juniors, placed seventh in the state with 92.9 out of 100 points. With most of these skiers returning next year, Lincoln should have a strong team. At the Stout State Meet, which brought together twenty of the best teams in Minnesota and Wisconsin, the Bears placed seventh. The gymnasts finished their season at the Region and State meets in early March. 229 Look Ma, no feat! 230 HI The hockey team had an average season with several outstanding in- dividual performances. Mark Liptrap set a new school record in the 880 to give him a second place. Jerry Johnson placed fifth in the low hurdles and qualified in the high hurdles. Batter-Up The 1969 baseball season was quite a bitter pill for Coach Mingo and the team to swallow. They had the potential to be a good team in the spring, or so it seemed. During one of the first practices, Joe Elder hit a ball out of the park, across the street and into a yard. Tad Bothwell provided a strong pitching arm while Jack Porter was a strong reserve pitcher. All positions were occupied by at least two players during the season. John Grobel and Ron Trimble found action behind the plate. First base was covered by Mike Urbach or Don Birdsong. Kraig Kranz or Tom Koplitz held second base while Jeff Larson took short stop and Jeff Moore or Jack Porter found duty at third base. Monte Johnson, Jon Kukachka. Gary Rice, and Joe Elder rotated in the outfield to complete the team. Inexperience plagued the team and led to the one- run defeats by Minnetonka, Hopkins, and Kennedy, the Lake Conference's top three teams. Front row: Tom Olson. Jim Henel, Barry Ansell. Brad Boa. Continuing growth and expansion was common in all parts of town. A brief tour of the city taken today, would reveal much growth and development. Directly across from our school is the new Penn Lake Library, finished just in time for Winter quarter book reports. About one mile to the Southwest is the new Ice Arena, which will contri- bute greatly to improving hockey programs and rec- reational opportunities. Just West of the arena is Normandale State Junior College, which will graduate its first class this year. Many ex-Bears have already made a name there and many more will follow. Less than a mile from the college is our third high school, Jefferson High. While it may mean a tem- porary downturn in LHS athletics it will mean in- creased educational opportunities. A few blocks away a new shopping center is rising, bringing new jobs and prosperity to Bloomington. Out West the hills are sprouting new homes and churches, as we move towards becoming Minnesota's third largest city. We've had much to be proud of this year: Our Vik- ings, our Twins, and our North Stars have all brought national prominence to our borders. While many seniors may be sad about leaving LHS they can be happy they live in a 1 city: Bloomington, Minnesota. 263 John Horton finds WARD'S Men's Wear is where it’s at.
