1 4 We Appreciate One way to express our appreciation and gratitude to a member of the school faculty or administration is to dedicate a yearbook to him. However, in the past, it has been usual to wait until the honored member has left Lincoln before recognizing his contribu- tions. We are violating this tradition this year to dedicate the '69 BEAR to a man whom we hope will stay at Lincoln for a long time to come. Mr. Raymond Hanson has been in the Bloom- ington school system since 1952. He taught science at Bloomington High School until he became assistant principal in 1957. In 1960 he became the principal. He has violated a few traditions of his own by placing much of his trust in the hands of his students. :i V Table of Contents Dedication ......................................4 Curriculum .....................................14 Fall .......................................... This Is De Place 12 Each of the counselors Miss Buller, Mr. Daffer, Miss Pinten, Mr. Red- mond, and Mr. Schuman have spent countless hours providing valuable guidance for each of his 400 stu- dents. To help understand the stu- dents' needs, tests were adminis- tered and interpreted by the coun- selors. Their advice and sincere in- terest in everything from schedule changes to planning the future helped smooth the way of every student. What's Cooking? It takes a lot of behind the scenes work to keep a school as large as Lincoln running smoothly. Custodians worked late into the night to keep the school shining and in a state of constant repair. The cooks had the difficult task of pro- viding nutritious lunches for over 2,000 people. Although the work of both staffs was often taken for granted, the results of their work was always vital to the school. 13 They Make a Clean Sweep 14 Art Is Creative Expression Mr. Jerome Kyllo Mrs. Betty Brenner Mr. Robert Bach Art stressed the freedom of creative ex- pression in a number of medias. Each of the three art rooms catered to a particular dimension. In one room, three dimensional work — pottery, sculpture, wood carving, jewelry—was created. Another room pro- duced two dimensional work such as paint- ing, drawing, and collages. The third room was devoted to textiles. Here students dyed fabric, designed patterns for cloth, or weaved rugs. Each quarter the students moved to a different room to attempt new creative expression. 15 The Band Is Sparkling Rhythm ABOVE PEP BAND: Row one: J. Jackson, J. Walters, G. Carl- son, E. Beverly, D. The orchestra was composed of students who could play a stringed instrument and a few members from the concert band. Their daily rehearsals resulted in a Christ- mas concert, background music for the spring musical, and an All-Conference pre- sentation of the Elijah. Other activities included field trips, clinics, festivals, and contests. Mr. James Chlebecek Home Economics Is Preparation For The Future Mrs. Ann Criswell Mrs. Merry Donley Training in cooking, sewing, baby care, home management, nutrition, and budget- ing was acquired in the home arts classes. Home Arts I, II, and III were progressive courses that gave girls general home eco- nomics knowledge. Senior homemaking condensed three years of home economics into one year. Experiences in Clothing was a class that offered intensive study in the fine arts of tailoring. 21 22 Electricity and Mechanical Drawing Are Applied Physics Mr. Donald Lundman Mr. Bruce Paine Printing Is the Production of Intelligible Design in Writing and Illustration Mr. Larrys Krueger Industrial Arts Is a Forearm to the Future Mr. Thomas Lampi Mr. Charles Hengel Industrial Arts courses provided boys with practi- cal training in all phases of shop. Drawing courses prepared students for college training in engineer- ing fields. Included were mechanical, technical, and architectural drawing. A class in fundamental auto mechanics was offered along with a practical elec- tricity course. More in depth were the electronics courses which progressed from basic electronics to the advanced third year course. Wood shop dealt with woodworking on power tools. Metal courses covered the use and care of metal working plus gas and arc welding. Students taking graphic arts learned printing methods, bookbinding, and silk screen processes. Comprehensive shop rotated students through various phases of shop work. 26 Phy Ed Emphasizes Teamwork and 9por+smanship Mr. Donald Switzer Mr. Charles Coffee Physical education classes were required for all sophomores. They participated in team and individual sports. Good sports- manship and teamwork were always em- phasized. Advanced physical education classes were electives offered to upper- classmen interested in learning further ath- letic skills. No You Can't . . . Make a Copy of That $ 1 0 Bill 29 30 Mr. Theodore Van Kempen Mr. Kenneth Sangrene Math Is the Universal Language Geometry is the branch of mathematics dealing with relationships of points, lines, and planes. Two dimen- sional figures and their properties are studied in depth. Higher Algebra students encountered paraboles, logarithms, imaginary numbers, rates of change, pro- gression, and confusion. An extension of elementary algebra, higher algebra reviewed many of the theor- ems learned in the first course. 31 Math analysis dealt with solid geometry—the relation- ship of objects in space—and trigonometry, the study of angles and their functions. Polynomial exponential and logarithmic functions were also covered. Mathe- matical structure was stressed throughout the course. The survey of mathematics class was for seniors who did not take advanced math courses but wished for a general math background. The course included basic concepts in algebra, geometry, and applications of arithmetic. Shop mathematics was geared for students who planned to go on in industrial arts courses. The math consisted of problems involving scale reading, fractions, decimals, and other problems of practical application to indus- trial arts. 33 Mr. Leroy Martinson Mr. William Qchs 34 Buenos Jour Mein (e) Magis+er (ra) A total of five years of French was offered to students. Simple dialogue was learned in the first two years with the emphasis shifted to reading and composition in the last three years. Language tapes, lectures, and movies were useful study aids. Students taking Latin found themselves learning the history of the great Roman civilization besides learning basic grammar, pronunciation, and sentence structure. Ro- man mythology was read and discussed. 35 1 Students desiring to learn Spanish could progress four years. The greatest emphasis was on conversational Spanish, although Spanish literature and composition was im- portant. Students learned the history and customs of Spain and Latin American coun- tries. A field trip to the Art Institute gave students a taste of Spanish art. German students became familiar with the geography, history, and people of Ger- many as well as with increasingly complex dialogue, literature, and grammar. Films and skits were used to liven up the stu- dents' interest in the language. Russian was a new language added to the curriculum this year. Students taking Rus- sian had to learn not only different gram- mar and pronunciation but also the cyrillic alphabet which contained more characters than the English alphabet. Students learned a little of the background and thoughts of 36 the Russian people. English Is Our Language Mrs. Grace Holland Mrs. Dorothea Larson 39 Humanities was an enriched English 12 class designed to give students the oppor- tunity to explore some of the greatest dra- ma, literature, art, and music ever created. In addition to the regular class room activi- ties, Humanities students studied Greek ar- chitecture in the Metropolitan area, visited cathedrals, saw the Guthrie presentation of the Orestia, and turned in a creative project based on intensive research and individual experimentation. Sophomores received a sampling of litera- ture from all over the world. Julius Caesar, To Kill a Mockingbird, Huckleberry Finn, and Idylls of the King were just a few of the books interpreted and discussed. A grammar unit helped students to write clear, concise themes. Juniors explored the background and com- position of American literature. They delved into classic short stories, books, and plays. The students' knowledge of grammar and writing technique was put to use in the writ- ing of a well-documented research paper and a short story. Seniors studied the development of Western thought from the Hebrews to the present day. Individual projects and speeches, light shows, films, and library research gave va- riety to the classroom activities. Mrs. Dorothy Arko Mrs. Jo Anne Cope Mrs. Mary Uloth The Journalism Class studied and discussed mass me- dia with particular emphasis on the newspaper. Stu- dents learned how to write feature stories, straight news stories, and editorials. They also learned some of the technical work involved in producing a news- paper. Students from this class were selected for edi- torial positions on the Mah-Quh in their senior year. Publications was a continuation of Journalism. Students in this class were editors on various school produc- tions and devoted class time to work on their publica- tions. Each student was required to turn in a project at the end of the year on some phase of journalism. Mrs. Lorraine Brynildson Mrs. Carol Sheffer 43 Word power was the main objective of Mr. Ehli's reading efficiency class. Students prac- ticed with controlled readers, books, and films to improve comprehension, vocabu- lary, and speed. Mrs. Palm and Mrs. Melum offered special instruction services to assist students who needed individual help. While running film projectors, tapes, and record players for all classes of LHS, visual aid assistants also learned how to repair and maintain their equipment. Mr. Edward Ehli Mrs. Evelyn Melum Mr. Lloyd Peterson Mrs. Margaret Palm Debate and 9peech Build Verbal Confidence Standing: Karen Hutchendorf, Sharon Kuenzel, lu- anne Evenson, Bob Ihrig, Barb Hanson, Gary West- fall, Dave Holman, Matt Sikich. Seated: Pat Taylor, Ann Mayfield, Janice Larson. 45 46 Speech classes offered students training in the basic skills of storytelling, serious interpretation, discussion, and lecturing. The course emphasized the importance of speaking clearly, effectively, and pleasantly. Resolved that the U. S. should establish a system of compulsory service for all citizens. This year's debators found themselves asked to solve one of our nation's biggest problems: the draft. The four varsity debators—Janice Larson, Bob Ihrig, Dave Holman, and Gary Westfahl—managed to come through the season with seven trophies: five first, one second, and one third place. Debate trips, the debate choir rehearsals, debate briefings, and debate puns livened up the class where debate students received advance training in oral argument and persuasion. Social Studies Is Discovery of the Past, Present, and Future Happenings. Mr. Thomas Howden Mr. Joseph Hutton Mr. William Rumpel Mr. Marshall Carlson mmr rrn rrm,, American history classes studied the major social, economic, political, religious, and military factors of America's history from Washington's administration through World War II. World history was a survey of man's triumphs and mistakes from ancient civilizations to the present. Dif- ferent cultures and different peoples were studied. Current events were mixed in with the studies to show how the past and present are related. Conservation was intended for students interested in learning about natural resources. The class studied two types of natural resources, the renewable and the non- renewable. Methods of preserving the resources were discussed. Modern problems attempted to increase stu- dents' understanding of national problems re- lating to economics, government, and sociol- ogy. U.S. policies in these areas were contrasted with the policies of other countries. Another area—sex education—was included in the cur- riculum. Mr. Robert Boeser Mr. Gene Wise Mr. Richard Coombs The international relations course was designed to give students a greater understanding of other peo- ples and their cultures plus a greater awareness of existing international struggles. An emphasis was placed on American involvement in world affairs. Different forms of government were evaluated during the year. The 19th and 20th century historical movements class explained some of the most influential philosophies and economic policies of Europe in the last two cen- turies. The course was not a recitation of historical events but an interpretive look into the motivating forces behind those events. 53 Mr. Thomas Randall Mr. James Dimond 55 The study of human behavior—psychology- delved into drives and motivations, emo- tions, perception, learning, and physio- logical principles. Students regularly partici- pated in experiments and surveys which aided them in understanding basic concepts. Physical science was a course designed for students who desired more background in the basic principles of physics and chemis- try. In space science, students learned some of the science involved in the conquest of space. Much individual lab work was per- formed. 56 Mr. Gary Greening Mr. Robert Pintozzi Curiosity, patience, and a willingness to work were prerequisites for physics, the study of man's knowledge of the natural world. The examination of the basic proper- ties of light, motion, electricity, and sound was pursued through lectures, experiments, and mathematical computations. Students taking physiology studied the structure and functions of the systems of the human body. A considerable amount of time was spent performing laboratory experiments dealing with muscle functions, cells, blood type, Rh factors, hemoglobin content, and general anatomy. 57 Biology—the study of living things—dealt with the composition, function, and rela- tionship of different organisms. Students spent much time making microscopic studies of representative species of plants and ani- mals. The environments of living things were observed in several field trips. Chemistry is the science that deals with the composition of the universe. Students be- came adept in the laboratory performing and interpreting experiments that illustrat- ed basic scientific theories. Cooperative Training Programs Offered Experience A special program at Lincoln was cooperative occupational training in which selected qualified seniors participated. The program combined class- room instruction with part time employment in jobs requiring the special training learned in the classroom. The training included merchandising and management techniques, business procedures, buying, selling, and storage. An alternate program, the non-coop, allowed students to remain in school while learning practical business skills and manage- ment. Business Education Is the Key to Success Business education courses supplied students with basic business skills. Classes in typewriting produced a minimum speed of 35 words per minute. Basic business presented the commonplace functions of busi- nesses everywhere. Bookkeeping and accounting were designed to familiarize students with business records and accounting skills. Stu- dents taking shorthand obtained a minimum speed of 120 words per minute after their second year. Office procedures was a class de- signed to put the knowledge gain- ed in previous classes to practical use. Miss Laura Barthelme Mrs. Jerilyn Weber Mr. Eugene Weyandt Modules Have Variety The modular system offered many varied modules, including anthropology, current events, probability and statistics, pre- flight aviation, and American history reading. Unusual subject modules allowed students to delve into a subject which would be skimmed over or missed in 64 the regular courses. In Art Modules, a student could concentrate on one media or experiment lavishly in all medias. Jewelry was designed and created. Leather and wood crafts were fashioned. An art module accounted for the artists' showcase arrangements. Mastery Of Art . . . There were a variety of modules to choose from in industrial arts. Students could learn the proper care of an automobile, repair electrical equipment, probe into the science of electricity, or learn the art of the lab technician. The modules were open to girls as well as boys. 68 The home economics modules were de- signed for talents ranging from an effi- cient homemaker to a beginning sewer. Girls tried their creative efforts at de- signing costumes and making inexpen- sive crafts out of household materials. Efficient home management was learned. An experimental module was a boy's class. . . . And Play The Physical Education modules made students become more coordinated and physically fit in all types of sports. Modern dance, gymnastics, arch- ery, tennis, and badminton were only a few of the individual sports offered. Team sports in- cluded volleyball, softball, football, and soccer. Students learned good sportsmanship in both in- dividual and team sports. 69 Fall Barb Fremder Kim Couch Debbie Smith Jim Lewis Sandy Carter Barry Kessler Kathy Richter Gary Engelson Homecoming 1968 As in years past. Homecoming festivities provided Lincoln with exploding excitement. The cheerleaders prepared cheers to encourage the Lincoln team to Nail the Robin's Tail as the election for a new king and queen took place. Each class worked hard to complete their floats in time for the Homecom- ing parade. At the end of a busy week. Homecoming activities came to a reluctant close with the semi-formal dance which centered around the theme Mystic East. THE '68-'69 HOMECOMING COURT: Queen Marsha Bengtson and King Steve Duerr; Sandy Carter, Barb Fremder, Kathy Richter, and Debbie Smith, princesses; Kim Couch, Gary Engelson, Barry Kessler, and Jim Lewis, princes; Gwen Pederson and Dave Free, junior attendants,- Leslee Zimmerman and Greg Youmans, sophomore attendants; Kris Dickinson, the Spirit of Homecom- ing,- Sharon Merrifield and Jerry Yushfa, senior ambassadors; Ann Norstad and Mark Liptrap, junior ambassadors; and Penny Paul and Tony Fischer, sophomore ambassadors. A 'Rocky' Season The 1968-69 football season was discouraging because of the many games that should have been won, but weren't. The team was always spirited, but mistakes in the forms of fumbles and intercepted passes often hurt. The team also had its good points. Fine play from Tad Bothwell, elected most valuable player, and all confer- ence tackle Monte Johnson bol- stered the BEAR defense. 80 Scores MOUND WE 31 THEY 0 RICHFIELD 7 33 WAYZATA 33 0 CRETIN 18 19 ROBBINSDALE 0 12 MINNETONKA 0 35 EDINA 0 12 HOPKINS 13 27 KENNEDY 0 28 VARSITY FOOTBALL Top row: Gary Fischer, Greg Cernjar, Jim Lewis, Paul Price, Gene Snesrud, Mike Urbach, Monte Johnson, Tad Bothwell, Dennis Tone, Greg Karbo, Dave Swanson, Paul Rosholt, Bill Adams. Sock It To Me This year marked the first year of interscholastic soccer competition for Lincoln. Enthusiasm for the new sport was excellent with sixty boys attending the first week of practice. Hard work and determination to improve unfamiliar skills became the goal for the first season. The lone victory of the season against Minnehaha Academy featured the fine individual talents of Willie Han- son and Matt Sikich. Two players. Matt Sikich and Dan Brokke, were elected to the all conference squad. The loss of eight graduating seniors will make next year's team another young squad. However, with a year of experience, soccer will continue to keep the interest of the Lincoln students for years to come. 83 The cross-country team had another hard fought season and came up with an even 5-5 won-loss record. Coach Bill Ochs pushed the team hard and made the sweat roll. The team started practice about two weeks before school. The practice paid off especially for Mark Liptrap, captain Ken Hayes, Rick Kesler, David Miller, and Rick Thomas who were the top Bear runners. ABOVE: 1st row.- T. Zwedersky. D. Marshall, J. Flag twirlers are the unsung heroines of Lincoln. Intensive prac- tices during the summer's swelter- ing heat produced their precise maneuvers on the field. Poise, rhythm, and coordination were apparent in their performances. We Cheer . . . Hockey cheerleaders should be commended for their unique ability to cheer on skates. They were chosen not only for their coordina- tion, enthusiasm, and voice, but also for their agility on the ice. It was hard, tiring work but the girls were always exuberant. B-squad cheerleaders gained valu- able experience in cheerleading techniques. They showed high spirits in facing their peers and upper classmen. Their cheering was greatly appreciated by the sophomore teams. 1968 FLAG TWIRLERS (top picture): Barb Swanson, Debbie Reynolds, Sandy Krautkremer, Julie Wickstrom, Leslie Ward, Cindy Delmonico, Sheryl Thoresen, Linda Armstrong, Bobbi Swanson, Kathy Childers. Chosen for their pep and personal- ities, the bear mas- g9 cots do their best to keep spectators smiling. The suit is hot and bulky, the pep is often an ef- fort, but the work of the bear mascot is always rewarded with a youngster's happy laugh, an adult's amused chuckle, or a team- mate's tired grin. The '68-'69 Bear mascots were (top to bottom',. Debbie Wilson, Nancy Miller, Kathy Berg, and Charliss Enroth. 90 Our Girls Can Dance! A special module plus many hours of after school rehearsals provided the Bruinettes with the competence needed for nearly faultless perform- ances during half times and at pep- fests. Choreography was in the hands of Mrs. Cope, the Bruinette advisor; Gwen Pederson, a semi- professional dancer; and each Bruin- ette. Updated school and dance uni- forms gave an added sparkle to the girls' performances. THE '68-'69 BRUINETTES: Peggy Murphy, Randi Miller, Gretchen Durkot, Laurel Nelson (capt.), Barb Voidness, Mary Kampmeyer, Ann Fridland, Kathy Richter, Dana Bouchard, Betse Wager, Marcy Preinor, Cathy Testin (co-capt.), Marilee Waddell, Debbie Smith, Lynnette Everret, Cheryl Olson, Linda Martin, Marcia Banks (not pictured), and Mrs. Joanne Cope, advisor. 92 Rhoda Was A Bad Girl The Bad Seed, a murder mystery, was performed around the appropriate date of Halloween. The cast consisted mostly of talented sophomores in their first play. The lead player, Kathy Gal- lagher, was an eighth grader at Olson. A tremendous set plus coaching by the energetic Mrs. Cope helped bolster the morale of the inexperienced cast and gave them the courage needed for their performances. Over 200 Lincoln girls, dressed in their best hillbilly garb, grabbed a guy and dragged him to Dogpatch for the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. Many ingenious attractions added to everyone's enjoyment. There was punch served in a bathtub, a thrill- ing lover's leap, a genuine wishing well, and an entertaining dance per- formed by the Slobbovian Bruinettes. Last but not least was a horde of Marryin' Sams to officially hitch a girl and her guy for another year. 96 . . . To Share A Dream The purpose of National Honor Society is to give recognition to the students who demonstrate a high degree of character, scholarship, service, and leadership. It is necessary for the mem- bers to maintain a 90% grade average. One of the services provided by NHS is tutoring. Most of the 96 members aided one student toward a clearer un- derstanding of a particular subject. SOUTH (OT) 60 62 What a difference a field goal makes! One field goal was all that separated our Bears from first place in the Lake Con- ference, and one point was all that stood between our boys and a possible trip to the State Tournament. Rated as 'good, but not a serious contend- er' at the start of the season, Coaches Hutton, Carlson, and Randall welded a strong contender around All Conference selections Tad Bothwell (guard) and Scott Finley (center). Joining these were strong performances by Mike Urbach (All Conference Honorable Mention), Bill Ste- vens, Greg Karbo, Dave Free, and Terry Martin which kept our guys at or near the top all season. A thrilling District Tournament which fea- tured a fantastic final 13 seconds against Robbinsdale and a near catastrophic last quarter against Hopkins brought the Dis- trict title home to Lincoln. With the loss of only two starters next year's team should continue where this year's left off. All in all it was a successful season for the Lincoln Ski Team led by Captain Chris Overvold and Bob Lees. The team finished the season with a 5-3 record. There was quite a range of skiers with the freshmen to seniors being repre- sented on the varsity squad. Finishing 4th in the district and 8th in the state the team can look forward to another good year next year. Our Icemen Qcore+h 129 130 I Lincoln skaters rated a strong 5th in the conference this year. Hard skating and tough defensive body-checking often led the BEARS to victory. Goalie Barry Kesler made the All-Conference Team with center Kim Couch rating honorable mention. Ray Dahlof was the highest BEAR scorer. Next year should have a strong squad with many returning lettermen. The team was especially strong in trampoline, free exercise, tumbling, and rings. At the Northwest Open, nine of the top ten teams in the state were present with the Bears taking fifth place. Seniors did most of the scoring this year, with Brent Smith and co-cap- tains Gary Mortenson and Steve Wasserman leading the way. Smith scored the most points for the team and was undefeated on high bar in conference meets. Mortenson chalked up numerous first places on both free exercise and tumbling while Wasserman made his points on the rings and parallel bars. Other seniors were Rick Blohm on trampoline, mats and free ex- ercise; Jim Gullickson on mats, and free exercise; and Jack McMullin and Rick Dodge on the rings. Prospects are bright for next year with many returning let- termen. Lincoln should prove to be a strength of region meets in years to come. The team took first place in two tournaments and second to Hopkins—rated third in the state—in another. The Lincoln team contained some of the best wrestlers in the state. Among these were captain Jim Lewis, who went undefeated in conference meets; Brad Gilbertson, who lost only one match; Mark Work- man, who won first place in two tournaments by pinning every opponent; and Gary Eckert, a skill- ful, determined wrestler. Boys Can Play Any boy not out for organized sports could participate in intramural basketball. The teams were formed by lot, with a captain appointed to each. The teams played in double round rob- in and double elimination tournaments. The rules were simple.- all boys had to play the equivalent of one quarter, and not gripe about anything. Officiating was done by Mr. William Ochs and Mr. John Lynch, with help from interested boys. 144 Athletes Form Christian Club The Fellowship of Christian Athletes began its first year at LHS. The purpose of the club was to confront athletes with the challenge and adventure of following Christ. The boys who par- ticipated met in homes to listen to speakers such as Jim Kaat and tapes by Bob Richards and Bart Starr on the influence of Christian morals on ath- letic life. Other topics discussed during the year were sex, sports, liquor, and sportsmanship. FCA MEMBERS (top): First row: Dennis Tone, Rick Thompson, Dave Free, Steve Boe. Sec- ond row.- Mr. D. Sportsmen Score Better in 'G9 The mighty Bear lettermen had a wonder- ful year promoting school spirit and service. A dance and the sale of megaphones helped raise funds for the club. The excellence of Lincoln athletes in the past year made the membership of the club higher than it has ever been. 146 Lincoln Spirit Grows S-P-l-R-l-T—spirit—an old word at Lincoln gained new meaning this year. Never before had cheerlead- ers, skits, speeches, and programs been so enthusiastically supported. Signs, buttons, and cheers were just a few of the contributions made by the newly-formed yet well-repre- sented Pep Club. The Bear Letter- men pitched in with their strong vo- cal support to add a bit of their own pep. Pep Club officers: Michelle Reiner, secretary; Cindee Hunt, president; Julie Nether- ton, vice-president; and Stacey Boem, treasurer. Girls Get Organized Y-teens was an all-girl organization that geared its activities to 148 programs of service, religion, careers, art, personal development, and recreation. The 350 Y-teen members were divided into 13 chapters. Each chapter met twice a month to participate in activi- ties ranging from money-raising projects to handwriting analysis. To supplement the chapter meetings, all-school events were held once a month. The hilarious Mock Olympics led the all-school events with the Apple-Polishing Tea, Recognition Banquet, West- minster overnight, and the Winter Formal following. The Evergreen Still Branches The Evergreen, Lincoln's literary maga- zine, contained the best literary and ar- tistic work produced by students during the year. The work was screened by spe- cial literary and art staffs under the guidance of Mr. Joseph Tufigno. To bol- ster the treasury. Evergreen was put in charge of the concession stand at the basketball games. Students taking graphic arts printed the Evergreen, mak- ing it completely a student project this year. The three plays, Sorry Wrong Number, Dirty Old Man, and The Lady of Larkspur Lotion, were judged by a play critic before district .competition. Dirty Old Man, the play he judged as best, went on to compete in the districts. All three plays were performed for the public in a single perform- ance. The Pop Group, directed by Mr. Gordon Barry, sang current popular songs for their own enjoyment and for special performances at public functions. The co-ed group wore matching uniforms which gave a professional air to their performances. The Honey Bears was a group of 11 senior girls who liked to sing 160 popular tunes. Their sweet harmony rang out at church banquets, PTA meetings, Southdale, Camelot, and school lyceums. The mem- bers of the Honey Bears began as the Penndettes at Penn Junior High when they were freshmen. A corridor of flags led the way into the Grand March which began a memorable evening in an intriguing Russian ballroom. Colorful gowns and corsages added to the back- ground of burgundy drapes and richly striped domes. The junior proletariat had slaved many tedious hours making silver chandeliers while the peasantry of the sophomore class prepared themselves for service to the upper classes. 186 The Many Facets of Our Diamond Men Jack Junker's last year as baseball coach was rather disappointing. While tying last year's record of 2 wins and 12 losses, the team had hopes of a better season. Kevin Kranz, captain, urged his team to keep their spirit and play well. Jeffrey Larson held the team's highest batting average. He and the other four returning lettermen have their eye on a promising '69 season. Richard Mingo, new head coach, and Robert Boeser, assistant coach, are also looking for- ward to a promising season. 188 9cores WE THEY ROBBINSDALE 7 8 MINNETONKA 4 2 HOPKINS 0 3 EDINA 1 4 NORTH ST. Several boys started run- ning in mid-February in hopes of a good season. Work- outs were always tough, led by Mr. Larrys Krueger with the jumpers; Mr. Don Arthur with the sprinters; Mr. Bill Ochs with distance and hurdles; and Mr. Burnham Elton with weights. Only a small part of the team was seniors, so hopes for a good '69 season are high. 193 PICTURED ABOVE: 1st row: K. Hayes, D. Gerou, M. Bullard, B. Mahlum, D. Swanson, J. Lewis, J. Mahlum, J. At the beginning of the school year committees were formed to try and obtain clocks for the halls, flowers for the planter, and music for the lunch- room. A grievance committee was set up to hear and solve student complaints. The council cre- ated Spirit Week before the Lincoln-Kennedy football game to encourage school patriotism. One of the biggest projects begun by the coun- cil was the establishment of a student lounge. The Metro-Suburban Teen Project and the United Fund Drive were also important ventures spon- sored by the student council. . . . Teaching, and Helping The purpose of the Future Teach- ers of America was to give inter- ested students a better under- standing of the role arid respon- sibilities of teaching. Club mem- bers had the opportunity to try teaching at nearby elementary schools. The enthusiastic help and sup- port that went unmentioned at athletic games, PTA meetings. College Night, and other school functions came from members of the Service Club. They hand- ed out programs and acted as guides throughout the year. NOEA is a co-curricular national youth organization dedicated to serve students enrolled in voca- tional office education. It is a pro- gram which develops the stu- dent's abilities and interest in the business world. . . . All the World's A Qtage ... Thespians, a national organization for high school dramatists, was a goal desired by all who had participated in a play. To become a Thespian, a student had to have worked on various stage crews for a minimum number of hours and have had at least a walk-on part in one play. The Thespian Club tries to further interest in theater arts by attending numerous plays and learning the work that goes on be- hind the scenes. Language Creates Understanding Language clubs taught words of welcome in five different lan- guages. Travelogue slides and descriptive words from guest speakers encouraged language club members to learn more about the country of their lan- guage. Fiestas, a Roman ban- quet, folk dances, and a marvel- ous state language festival kept members enthusiastic through- out the year. 210 LANGUAGE CLUB OFFICERS: Janice Larson, German Club sec.; Barb Hanson, Latin Club pres.; Pat Taylor, French Club sec.. Bob Ihrig, German Club pres.; Cynthia Yaeger, Spanish Club rep., Joan Freeman, German Club sec.- treas.; and Ann Mayfield, French Club pres. Clubs Strive for Learning The philosophy club spent the year discussing the philosophies of Nietzsche and Pascal. The pur- pose of the club was to examine these great thinkers of the past. Members strived to understand why the philosophers thought as they did and the effect of their philosophies on the world. Mr. Donald Kuzma, advisor, lectured at each meeting and guided the discussions. The chess club was for students who wished to sharpen their skills at playing chess. Numerous games played at Lincoln various levels of skill prepared members for the State High School Chess Tournament. Participation in the Metro- politan Chess Conference and the local All-Stu- dent Chess tournament gave chess club mem- bers an incentive for improving their game. Artistic paper cor- sages, water balloons, and green confetti helped seniors to celebrate the week. Dress-Up Day, Weird Wednesday, Play- nite, and Sports Day made the week a success. The Sweetheart Dance on Valentine's Day, held af- ter the basketball game, was an appropriate end to a memorable week. June 5, 1968 marked the end of the twelve years of schooling for over 530 seniors. The graduation exercises were held outdoors in the waning light of a beautiful day. The graduating seniors had mixed emotions—re- luctance to leave the security of familiar sur- roundings and anticipation for whatever lay ahead. They held as their very own the memories of the good times, sad times, and funny times of their class. 247 The Bears Take a 9pring Fling at Qouthtown Shelly Olson discussing information pertaining to her Marketing, Sales Promotion, Advertising Job Manual with Roger Grande, Lawn, Garden, and Toy Dept.
