Homecoming, student pic- tures, Winter Formal, ath- letic events, Prom, and other varied activities were all important to each one of us. To many seniors the most important event was graduation. For both Lincoln High School and the graduating senior class, it was the beginning of a new era. Ric, a student director of The Mouse That Roared , worked with Joan Velie and Greg Jones after practice one night. 10 Pat, activities editor discussed the yearbook with other editors: Kathy Hartkopf. Sue Reder, Marcia Englestad, and Sue Springer. 1966 graduates Pat Hughes and R i c Hobbie were con gratulated by Mr. Hanson. Seniors’ Life at L.H.S. Although there was much will power in this year's seniors, their co-ordination was sometimes limited. At last year's Junior Burger Burner. Larry MacDonald, Karen Belden. Barb Velie, and Jim Peck relaxed after eating their probably raw hamburgers. One of the art displays was observed by Debbie Roster and Margaret Fahrenkrog. Sadie Hawkins each November posed some problems for the boys. 12 This year's Homecoming Royalty was congratulated after the coronation by numerous Lincoln students and alumni. Since BHS split into two schools a strong rivalry has sprung between Lincoln and Kennedy. A tradition has been set this year which reaches the epitomy of this rivalry. This is 'Thee Old Helmet' game with the winner taking home the ancient helmet found in the ’old' Bloomington High School (Annex). Another tradition we set this year was winning the game and keeping the trophy. Traditions are meant to be kept. It was cold and wet, the stands were filled to capacity, at least the visitor's side was full since we had to sit on the visitor's side in our own stadium, but then......... We were really up for this game. Our Bears were really great that night. The defense kept the Eagles down to 3 points and that was off the boot of Jon Hammer. Big game at Edina found the Hornets getting off to a 13-4 lead, but the Bears led by Olson’s 26 points stormed back to outplay and outscore Edina in the remaining game, but did not have quite enough and fell 62-57. Bears controlled the backboards. The Bears made it 4 and 5 with victories over Cooper 37-27 and Mound 67-52. The Bears front line controlled the boards in both games. In a heart-breaking game with Richfield, the Bears lost 64-60 in two overtimes. Backstrom, Kud- rle, and Peterson fouled out, hurting the Bear cause. Lincoln bounced back to defeat the Trojans at Wayzata 55-51—behind 49-43 with three minutes to play—Kudrle, Olson and Peterson led a surge to outscore Wayzata 12-2 in the last minute for a win. In a non-conference game with Wilmar, the team played before a full house at 1:15 p.m. The Bears ripped the Cardinals 62-41 with Bauer and Kudrle Backstrom working well inside. Bear guards, Bauer and Kudrle were outstanding, but a last second basket killed their chances. The Bears got revenge on Ton- ka with a 68-51 win on the loser's floor. The team defense was beautiful due to the play making of Kudrle and great control of the boards again by Peterson, Backstrom and Olson. In an exciting game with Edina for the second time, the Bears played great in spots, but a last minute surge by Edina ended in a 71-69 win by the Hornets in a real thriller. The Bears took a 14 point lead into the dressing room at half time against the unde- feated Hornets, but failed to shoot as well in the second half. Lincoln stopped Hopkins for the second time in a 59-50 thankful win, after the big Ed- ina game. Peterson's 19 points and backboard playing were a big factor in the win. With the help of only two seniors the team came through a very rough season looking better than expected. This year the juniors and soph- omores had a great opportunity to prove what they could do against the more experienced teams. After the discouraging season, the Bears faced this year, we know their goal is going to be high and inspired for next year. The experience a team gains dur- ing a season is the most important thing to building a strong, more confident team. Many things can be learned in a season no matter what the outcome: the willingness to play your hardest, workinq as a team, and good sportsman- ship. These factors are going to be the thinqs that will make a good hockey team of our returning players. We got the puck so let's keep it that way Well, We Beat ’Em in Football . . . . Many hours of hard work have gone into the production of this first LHS year- book, and we hope that through the years not just the seniors, but also the juniors and sophomores will be able to enjoy the work of the '66 Bear staff. Although we would not be able to thank everyone that we want to on this one page, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the following people: Mr. Raymond Hanson for helping us organize our staff last summer and for his helpful advice throughout the year. Mrs. Mabel Foss for patience, understanding, and encouragement. Our teachers who let us out of class so that we could meet our deadlines. All the LHS faculty for tolerating our demanding requests throughout the year, and especial- ly Mr. Joe Hutton for his help in writing basketball body copy. Mr. James Dimond who developed pictures for us in times of emergency and for helping us design our cover. Mr. George Melander for supplying us with pictures whenever we asked for them. Mr. Dan Gleason and Taylor Publishing Company for their guidance and advice. Mr. Fran Koch for pictures loaned to us from the Sun-Suburbanite. Office secretaries and counselors for helping on the sale of our yearbooks and for providing us with proofreading and class lists. Steve Gamble who provided us with art work for our cover and title page and miscellaneous art work in the Sports Section. Mr. Bruce Paine and the custodians for opening up the photo lab for us at all odd hours of the day and night. Miss Virginia Roden who was the advisor of the circulation staff. Mr. Eugene Weyandt, our faithful advisor who put up with the staff the entire year, for more than words can express. '66 Bear—enough said.
