In return for your untiring faith and trust in our corporation, we proudly present, to all stockholders, this review of our happiest and most outstanding of school years. This annual is our dividend to you for allowing us to share with you our happiness and good times. ln looking over the pages of our report, you will recall many memorable events that took their respective places in our '48-'49 sched- ule. We have worked very hard in the different organizations to make this such a year. Many dividends have been paid off. Among these are the plays, cancerts, athletic contests and the honor students. The great- est dividend which we can especially notice is in the great number of honor students. All activities have gone along very smoothly and have made great progress. 1948 and 1949 has been a very profitable year in Lincoln High School. As we have gone through this year we have thought of posterity. We are very proud of what our school has done in the past year. This report is very small compared to the many activi- ties in Lincoln High. The students of Lincoln High want you, the stock- holders, to also enioy this annual, as we know we will. Q 1? .asm --4 .. STUDENT CGUNCIL The Student Council is one of our school's oldest and most important organizations. It was first introduced into this school in l927. This group is composed of two members from each class, one girl and one boy, and the class presi- dent of each class. The Student Council is very important, for it maintains order in the halls in patrol the halls have volunteered for this work. This year our Student Council sent four represent- atives to the fourteenth annual convention of the Wisconsin Student Council Association held at Wauwatosa on November 12 and l3. The Student Council trains students to learn more about demo- cracy and to assume responsibilities. Miss Nairn has charge of this progressive group. The first day of school brought many new, exciting faces and personalities into our midst. The night of the all school mixer arrived with the bravest of the greenies wishing they were, oh, just any place, but not there! This was the night the new seniors were waiting for, here was their chance to show their supremacy. As the night progressed, the funny antics of the young- est students left everyone in an eager and happy mood. The highlight of the freshmen year is the freshman party. At this party the grand march was led by Janet Van Ornum and Wallace Nel- son. The entertainment consisted of a short- skit and musical selections, later dancing. With every new group of freshmen come many students with talents which develop into outstanding accom- plishments. During their freshman year they begin getting accustomed to the competition in their particular field and begin to work harder and harder at it until they are its master. From this freshman class, Lincoln High has gained future masters in every field the school offers and these students will continue to serve their school faith- fully through the years. .L Z- L 300 250' 100 - 150. fan 50 I.,-'s 3 s if it ww . Many students have proved themselves to be outstanding in various fields, and have thus contributed to the glory of L. H. S. The education they received plus their extra-curricular work has prepared them to be the leaders of tomorrow, whether it be as men of science, music, politics, education, or any other fields open to them. They will also remember the fun that they had here, too - cheering at the basketball and foot- ball games, attending the plays presented by the Dramatic Club, ioining in on the traditional snake dance, and waltzing at the Junior Prom, where Mike Daly and Pat Pivinski reigned as king and queen. Yes, the seniors will remember many things which have contributed to making the four years spent here the most memorable in their life. 250 GRAD UATE5 A .. TRIPLE THREAT TORRESANI ALL-CONFERENCE BACK Lincoln High school sent a team onto the grid- iron this year that lacked only in weight and reserves. After beating Nekoosa 39-0 and fight- ing a big Wausau team to a 0-0 tie, the Raiders proved their speed to be an asset over - bal- ancing the lack of weight. The team breezed OFFENSE past Merrill 47-0 and then was finally scored upon by Antigo in a 44-7 battle. Then the mighty Rapids team, now ranked as one of the top teams in the state, traveled to Green Bay. The three-act comedy, based on the life of the fictitious teen- ager, Henry Aldrich, was 'flull of laughter and thrills with a sprinkling of romance. That the two-hour play was enioyed immensely by all, was evidenced by the applause and ovations received. , W H A T A L l F E By Clifford Goldsmith ALL SCHOOL PLAY Lincoln Field House NOVEMBER l7TH-l8TH 8:00 P. BASKETBALL SEASON History was made this year in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, as Wisconsin Rapids won an undisputed basketball championship and finished undefeated for the season. All foes, conference or non-conference fell beneath the Raider on- slaught as they breezed through their schedule with the Antigo game being the closest and a game won by the Rapids while far from top form. The game causing the most anxiety to the Wisconsin Rapids Red Raider followers was the Eau Claire game played on their floor. En- countering a tall team and one of the best in the state, the Raiders had to display some mag- nificent ball playing to win, which they did by a great fourth quarter and a 59-50 score. The '49 Raiders were a pretty sight in qction. They were a capable, hard working and a perfectly condi- tioned group of boys. Dean Showers did more scoring than any of his teammates, but they helped by their teamwork and by being scoring threats themselves. Showers was chosen All-Con- ference center, Torresani, Daly and Mader made the first team with Kuehl and Simonis receiving honorable mention. Statistics show that the Raiders chalked up four firsts in the lndoor Carnival, Penta-Scholastic, Valley, and State sectional meets, while placing third in the annual indoor meet. At the Madison West Relays, the relay team ran seventh. Individuals who stood out at the State meet were Jim Reimer, who took second place in the shot-put, Don Soe, who ran third in the half-mileg and Mike Daly, who pole-vaulted into fifth place. BASEBALL-This year, Wisconsin Rapids took over the Valley baseball championship for the third consecutive time. Hav- ing ended the season with an unbeaten record against Stevens Point, Nekoosa, and Marshfield, the Raiders handed Wausau a 3-l defeat in the play-off game held May 25. lncidentally, this defeat came against Joe Dahlke, who was later a pitching star for the,Wisconsin Rapids White Sox. Graduation left at least eight positions open, thus providing a good opportunity for prospective players this year. GOLF-Six boys made up the 1948 golf team, and of these Everett Henke, Dave Henke, Joe Marceau, and Robert Boles were minor letter winners. Under the expert direction of Mr. Manders, the golfers won all four of the tournaments in which they participated. They took top honors against Marshfield, both at home and at Marshfield, in the Valley meet, and in the con- test held amang the Eau Claire, Wausau, Marshfield, and Rapids high schools. fa.. The Lincoln High School a Capella Choir is a fine organization. This year the group learned general music and music appreciation. The group participated in the Thanksgiving assembly and the annual Christmas concert. During the first semester the choir was under the direction of Miss Heineman. At the beginning of the second semester Miss Brueggeman took over the direction of the choir. Here they have an opportunity to display their talents before the public at their concerts, and also at their meetings which are held at members' homes. During the year, the members earn points. Those who earn twenty- four points become eligible for the honor roll. Each year medals are awarded to outstanding seniors of the club. Every year this organization brings forth many promising musicians. SWING SHIFTERS The Swing Shifters are Lincoln High's very pop- ular dance band. Our school is gifted with one of the few organizations of this type in the state. No school dance is complete without the smooth music of the Swing Shifters. With Mr. Hornig as their advisor, they practice for hours to please the students at the dances. With the small fee they charge for the dances, they buy music and this year purchased new music stands. A great deal of appreciation goes to these boys and girls. Row 2.-R. Markworth, W. Nobles, D. Denniston, P. Ziegler, F. Sheffer, C. Leverton, R. Gasch. Row l.-E. Westfall, A. Ziegler, J. Knuth, l. Seventeen boys responded to the call and out of these, thirteen finished the season. A 2V2 mile obstacle course was laid out on which the boys ran intra-squad meets. The team competed in three outside meets, win- ning its first two against Antigo by scores of 16-51 and I5-55 respectively. The last meet was a state meet held at South Milwaukee. For the Rapids Harriers, Jacobsen placed first and was followed by Bemke, Enerson, and Samuelson in that order. The team produced four letter winners in Bemke, Enerson, Jacobsen, and McGraw. Others out for the sport were Leverton, Ashenbrenner, Casey, Casper, and Bocaner. LIBRARY CLUB With library circulation averaging over 200 daily, it was decided that an organization to handle the work was needed. Thus, the new Li- brary Club was formed. Students enrolled in elementary and advanced library classes, as well as any other interested student, are eligible to ioin. The faculty advisor is Miss Pedersen. Be- sides its library duties, the club also has charge of crowning the Homecoming queen, cataloguing costumes and records, and keeping the school scrap book. Meetings are held twice a month- once in the afternoon and once in the evening. At this time, each girl is given an assignment to prepare at this meeting. ln its first year, the Library Club has proven itself to be an efficient and capable body. We hope its success continues. SCENES AT THE FORMAL The biggest and perhaps the busiest club in school is the Thes- pian Dramatic Club. This club dates back to the time of our parents and every year is grow- ing because of increased interest arising from its ever changing programs. When a student first ioins the club, he is a member of the Dramatic Club only. After he has earned a total of ten points either by acting, direct- ing, or working in one of the many phases of production, he is entitled to become a Thespian which is a National Honorary Society. Some of the cIub's pro- iects during the past year were the all-school play, the Thespian Formal, and the series of four Thespian directed one-act plays. The club, this year having the biggest membership enrollment in its history, is capably directed by Miss Harriet Schleich, the faculty advisor. with Row 3.-J. Pomainville, R. Nobles, N. Hannemon, R. AT WO RK TAM AND SMOCK One of our school organizations that appears least in the limelight, but in reality works about the hardest is the art club known by its official name of Tam and Smock. Anyone in school who is interested in 'art, regardless if he has ability to draw or not, is eligible to belong. The work of this club especially shines at our Prom and Thes- pian Formal and the Homecoming Dance. But their work is not limited to this. They make posters, design program covers, and do other work along this line. Miss Jean Brainard is the faculty advisor. At the meetings, which are held twice monthly, the Delta Theta Sigma usually has a guest speaker or a movie is shown. Each spring the club holds its annual dinner at the Paper lnn. Besides this activity the club has a two-day trip. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club is open to any student who studies Spanish. At the club meetings the mem- bers have an opportunity to become better ac- quainted with Spanish customs and traditions. Short topics are given and the different phrases of life of other countries are also discussed at the meetings. Row 2.-R. Toepel, S. Honkomp, P. Lubben. Row 1.-P. Schlotfelt, D. Hodge, M. Sheffer, L. Freshman and sophomores have gym class-es on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, while iuniors and seniors have gym on Tuesday and Thursday. Football in fall, then volley ball until basketball season, PHYSICAL EDUCATION more volley ball and then baseball is the schedule for most boys, However ping pong, handball etc. are preferred by some. The most talked about thing by boys in gym is the running of the mile, which is run by every boy in school, shortly after the end of the first semester. The girls play lots of baseball, basketball and hit pin ball. Another fav- orite of the girls is badminton. During the balmy weather a visitor out on Witter Field would see much action when the girls clash in field hockey. ,. S R 2 Q INTRAMURAL SPORTS SENIOR LEAGUE CHAMPIONS - CARDINALS A. Haferman, W. Miller, R. Hoekstra, R. Mueller, D. Wallock, G. Haferman w , 5 , HANDBALL CHAMPION A. Kiedrowski Intramural sports are held for students not participating in interscholastic athletics. Basket- ball, handball, and ping pong are the chief at- tractions. This year, boxing was excluded from intramural sports because too few signed up to participate. Boxing usually caused much interest, PING PONG CHAMPION J. Schenk as does basketball, which is divided into the iunior and senior divisions with each team meet- ing the other teams in its league but once. During their respective season, the maior sports are: hit-pin baseball, hockey, volley- ball, and baseball. The lesser sports are: tennis, ping-pong, badminton, and archery. The girls receive points for the sports in which they par- ticipate. When a member acquires five hundred points, she is eligible for an emblem, one thous- and, a pin, and one thousand five hundred points a letter.
