Now Miss Nairn has charge of this pro- gressive group which is composed of two elected members from each class plus the class presidents. This organization proves to be an excellent train- ing center for citizens in a democracy in that students learn good judgment, ability to assume responsibilities, and initiative. The Student Coun- cil maintains order in the halls by having volun- teered students patrol the hall each mornng and noon. The Student Council has also carried on a noon hour program with a variety of things to do like dancing, basketball, ping pong, and mov- ies. To add to its success of this year the Council has created the General Assembly. The purpose of this assembly is to give aid and advice to the Student Council as to what the students themselves would like to have done. General Assembly mem- bers are elected from every group of thirty-five and are elected for a term of one semester. While the bonfire was blazing, the snake dance began to unwind itself slowly down Grand Avenue to the West Side Market Square. Here a few yells were given and these closed the events of this night before Homecoming. The next after- noon a' pep meeting was held in preparation for the great game that night. It was presented by the FULL OF PEP BOB MADER RESPONDED FOR THE ALUMNI IIMI G Thespian Dramatic Club. Then came the annual ceremony of the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Shirley johnson. To climax the affairs of the afternoon, an alumni tea was held in the Cafe- teria. That night came the much awaited-for game with Antigo, and the truly victorious score was 27-0. The fuse had now exploded and to climax the loud crash was the Homecoming Dance that evening in the gym. CROWNING THE QUEEN SYMBOL OF VICTORY If ' . uw W? Points are given for every type of work that concerns dramatics, such as acting, directing, make up and production work. After earning ten points, a member then is eligible to become a National Thespian. Some of the club's big projects this year were the all-school play The Man Who Came to Dinner, and the Thespian Formal. The club also undertook a new project this year. Two series of four one-act plays were presented. One series was presented at the Dramatic Club meet- ings, and turns were taken by the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes, with stu- dents in the play given by their respective class. The other series was presented to the public. All eight of the plays were directed entirely by stu- dents. The club's advisor this year was Miss Har- riet Schleich, a new member of the faculty. Goodness, Seehagen, LaVigne, Cotterill, Gillis, Husson, Keith, Pivinski Any person attending a Lincoln High School football or basketball game has noticed a group o girls dressed in white cheering for the team. his is the Pep Club which is composed of ninety junior and senior girls. Several of the highlights on the club's program were the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, the Senior Farewell Dance, the Pep Club Date Dance, and the Leap Year Dance. The club had charge of the cheerleaders, helped organize the pep meetings, and chartered busses to carry some of that good old Lincoln High spirit to out-of-town games. They also pro- vided ushers for many of the school activities. The Rapids and Rhinelander football teams and the Rapids and Marshfield basketball teams re- ceived nice rewards for their hard fought games. After both o these games, the teams were treated to a dinner ought, prepared, and served by Pep Club girls. The faculty advisor was Miss Pedersen. All t rough the season, the Raiders showed savage blocking and tackling combined with excellent team spirit to make a winning football team. First, the Rapids crushed Nekoosa, 25-0, and rolled ,on to victory the next week by an identical score against the Rhinelander Hodags. Next, hampered greatly by a wet field and a massive Lumberjack line, the Raiders lost their only game of the season at Wausau, 26-6. Coming back from defeat in fine style, the Wisconsin Rapids eleven downed a stubborn Merrill squad and buried both La Crosse and Marshfield by lopsided scores. The yearly Stevens Point battle was the final game on the schedule. The invading Panthers came with an undefeated record and a tie against the mighty Wausau, but the Raiders were obviously unim- pressed. From the opening kick-off, the Wisconsin Rapids machine rolled up and down the field to completelly snow under t e Pointers, 40-6. Indivi- dual bril iance was not lacking on Coach Man- der's squad as shown by the three first squad All- Conference selections. They were Captain Don Reinicke, 'lack Torresani, and jim Reimer. Reinic- ke was also selected for the All-State team for his faultless work at the guard spot. The Red Raiders played a terrific schedule of twenty-eight games against some of the best teams in the state, yet lost only four. Vastly underrated in preseason specu- lations, the Raiders immediately began commanding respect as they rang up win after win. The Lincoln High cagers tied with a great Rhinelander team or the Wisconsin Valley Conference crown. The Rapids squa suffered their only defeat in con- ference play to Wausau on the tricky Lumberjack home court. Later in the season revenge for this upset was more than amply taken as the locals sent Wausau stumbling in defeat, 51-24 in one of the season's great games. Rapids' only defeat in non- conference pretournament action came at the hands of the state champion Wauwatosa squad in a very close game. Perhaps the most exciting battle of the season was played against the Old Abes from Eau Claire. In one of the closest games seen by the local fans in a long time, the Raiders had to give their all to win in an overtime, 45-44. Our regular season was concluded by a one-sided victory over Mosinee. In the first tournament at Point, Rapids subdued Nekoosa, Mosinee, and Point in that order. The Nekoosa Papermakers proved very stiff opposition as their very aggressive type of asketball slowed down the Rapids considerably. In the next tournament held here on the Fieldhouse court, our Raiders downed Minocqua with ease. In the second game, the co-champion Rhinelander squad fell be- fore our determined cagers. for the second time in the season. Lincoln High had qualified for the State Tournament for the third time in four years. In the inals at Madison, the Red Raiders just couldn't get going. T ey lost a hard fought game to Menasha to drop them into the consolation bracket. In the second game, a high-geared Rapids offense downed Monroe only to be stopped short the next night by the great defense put up by Hur ey in the consolation finals. The impressive rec- ord built up by this year's Red Raiders proves without a doubt that it was one of the great basketball teams in Lincoln history. Torresani turned out an- other outstanding track squad. The Red Raiders successfully defended their championships in the Valley Conference meet, the Lincoln High Indoor classic, the annual pentagonial meet and the sec- tional elinzinations. In the tough annual Wisconsin Rapids Invitational Indoor meet held in the Field House, Rapids placed second to the mighty Madi- son West squad. Four meet records were broken and another tied b one of the classiest fields of athletes in years. Tjhe Raiders took a fifth in the Madison West Relays and went on' to take the Lincoln High Indoor in a record breaking spree. A neat oictory at Eau Claire then brought the Raiders to the annual Valley Conference classic. At Witter Field, Wisconsin Rapids scored 101 M points to crush their Valley rivals and clinch the championship for the third straight year. Berrend, Ritchay, Reimer, and Soe all set all-time conference records for the locals. The Raiders then success- fully defended their sectional championship and went on to the State meet to earn a tie for seventh. BASEBALL Another conference title was brought home in 1947 by the Wisconsin Rapids baseball team. In defending their 1946 title, the Red Raiders dropped only one tilt as Wausau's foe Dahlke pitched a no-hitter to turn back the Rapids nine. Wisconsin Rapids finished in a tie with Wausau for first place and Neleoosa for third place. Re- turning lettermen for the 1948 squad include such able performers as Neale Haferman, Don Reinic- ke, Rog Reimer, Bill Habeck, and fack Torresani. With such material put under the able direction of Coach Dale Rheel, success is almost certain. In bas- ketball, there are two leagues, the major and the minor, each being divided into teams like the Lions and Cubs. In boxing, there are different classes according to the participant's weight. This phase attracts many visitors, even though it is not allotted much time. Ping pong and handball are also two sports maintained throughout the year, and in the spring champions are declared.
