We must tight again, not with guns, planes, and tanks, but with education and legislation -- with new ideas, new ideals. More than a few of the men who defended our American way of life shall not return, they lie buried under the drifting coral sand of some tiny island or under the poppies of another Flanders Field. The crosses over their graves bear mute testimony of the consequences dealt nations who closed their ears to the pleas of a world against enslavement. The challenge and the obligation that they have passed on, to create a better, more peace loving world, will soon rest upon us, for though we are but the students of today, we must become the men and women of tomorrow. Lincoln has given our answer to that obligation in the closing lines of his Gettysburg address - ' '... That we here highly resolve that these men shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth.' www RE G U LA T I O N . . . The governing body, the Student Council, is composed of three representatives from each class, two elected at large, and the third the president of the class. With the help of deputies who volunteer their services, this governing body awakens in the students a sense of obliga- tion in citizenship, and has made them conscious of the need for social and self-control. Any student found violating the rules of the school is taken to court where a suitable penalty is imposed. The influence of the council on the members themselves develops initiative, ability to assume responsibility, judgment, and know- ledge of community needs. This year the student council has taken on other duties. An extensive noon hour program was worked out for those who had to stay at school during the lunch hour. This program included basketball, volley ball, ping pong, dancing and dancing lessons, movies, and other forms of entertainment. lc nfl is? , .:-k Row IV: Simonis, Westphal, Cotterill, Henke, Bauer, Hoagesteger, Krohn, Klawitver, Lathrope, Bender, Christiansen Raw V: Wilcox, Benson, Krumrei, Zager, Steinke, Koss, Severance, Petersan, Henke, Duckart, Siewert, Row IV: Jackan, Hagen, Gaggins, Busch, Crotteau, Padags, Link, Krall, Goggins, Gross. The trimming of the Christmas tree, a program of community singing, and the annual date- dance are added proiects of this organization. Most teachers of modern languages agree that it is highly advantageous to have such a group to arrange for activities to supplement the daily classroom work. At club meetings the members gave reports on famous Spaniards and South Americans, carried on conversations in Espagnole, and at some meetings told iokes in Spanish. The highlight of the year was a party at which the French Club members were the guests. Senors Teske and Hagen gave the group their renditions of South American tunes, after which the first year Spanish class put on a two act play. Then came the grand climax. Keith Hackbarth broke the pinata with a mighty swing that sent candy, gum and nuts fly- ing all over one end of the cafeteria. Through its outside activities the French Club also did much to better acquaint its mem- bers with the French language at monthly Thursday evening dinners. Club members care- fully planned French menus and made an effort to preserve French customs and traditions. To further enrich the year's program, a study was made of French music and composers. Another highly successful basketball season was completed by the Red Raiders, when, in a blaze of glory, they defeated Stevens Point to win their first Wisconsin ,Valley Conference title. Sharing that honor with Stevens Point, the squad lost of, which was in conference play. After the close of valley competition, the Lincolnites set out after the state title. At Madison, one of the most heart-breaking defeats in school history dropped them from play, when the not to be denied team from Reeds- ville finally triumphed in an overtime period. iust four games during the season, only one 9 f wits?-F A 4 T-ywgrg Y r- A , 1 2, 1 1. 2 3,8 +3 'La if ' s.? 3. 3 Egg? 2 gf ' 5 if Gr i' mLh fx' U wwf J ii W 75 LA i J f.'- 1 -V.' uw, K iii? LATHROPE Tennis Members of the Girls Athletic Association have well sup- ported one of Lincoln High School's most! popular extra cur- ricular activities. All girls interested in athletics were en- couraged to participate in its many competitive sports. Throughout the year teams were formed which offered com- petition between classes in such sports as hockey, volley ball, badminton, ping pong, basketball, softball, archery, tumb- ling, and tennis. Points were credited to girls taking part in these sports, and at the end ofthe year, awards, in the form of pins, emblems, and letters, were presented. In keeping with the tradition of the organization, a senior girl, out- standing for her scholastic as well as athletic work, was awarded the G. A. A. trophy. 11.1 it D. NEWMAN Field Hockey M. Perhaps the most active and competitive of the activities was basketball. Two leagues were formed for the one hundred sixty participants - the senior league, composed of juniors and seniors, and the iunior league, made up of freshmen and sophomores. This year fifty-six boys entered in six- teen divisions of boxing. A great deal of interest was shown in these bouts, especially in the final match, in which Bernie Schmick triumphed over Melvin Zeaman. Provisions for participation in volley ball and ping pong were also made by the conscientious adviser, Mr. Torresani. ' CLASS WINNERS THE FACULTY TEAM Row 2: Torresani, Specht, Plenke, Munders. APPLWNG THE TORCH GOLNG FULL BLAST , Agn: K THE SNAKE DANCE The Rapids football fans saw the season climax with an all out effort to welcome home the servicemen. The traditional bonfire and snake dance, which started the activities, was followed by a memorable pep meeting for servicemen, parents, alumni and students. After Ed Murgatroyd responded to the warm welcome extended to the servicemen, a colorful skit, Football Through the Ages, was presented by the iunior class. Stepping out of the past in fitting attire, representatives from the various periods of history commented on football in their times. The high point of the pep session was the crowning of Queen Elaine Vanderhei, elected from twelve candidates by popular vote. Following the Alma Mater which closed the pep program, service- men and alumni were guests of the faculty at a reception held in the cafeteria. Although the team lost a heartbreaker to Merrill, students of Lincoln High celebrated a bigger victory in an atmosphere which bore out the theme Welcome Home Servicemen. Standing about, listening to the music of Brault's Canadians of Green Bay, or gayly laughing over a glass of punch served from the pop corn wagon, and then back to the floor for a dance or two - this was the entertainment of that eventful evening which was interrupted only by the grand march which drew many spectators in the balconies. For this, one of the most successful of school activities, Lincolnites expressed their apprecia- tion to the faculty advisers, Miss Ruggles and Mr. Johnson and the student committees.
