2 3 OAr 4' (X 6 7 Mrs. Dorris Kelsor Mrs. Dorris Jean Kelsor was a teacher and librarian for 32 years. She did not leave this position because she was tired or “burned out. ” Only those who were very close to her knew what an effort both physically and emotionally it was for Mrs. Kelsor to continue working. But nowhere could one find a person who loved to be around people, to be involved and to be a help than Mrs. Kelsor did. In spite of her severe physical problems, Mrs. Kelsor was NEVER without her smile and a cheery greeting to everyone she encountered. There was never a request that she couldn’t “handle whether it be selling cpndy bars or finding a telephone number of Mr. Smith in Timbuctu. If you asked her for information and she didn’t know, you can bet she would find out. Mrs. Kelsor had a very infectious laugh, and even at the worst of times it was always there ready to surface and spread to those around her. Never has there been a person more dedicated to her God, her church, her community, and her people. Those who worked with her will truly miss their “Special K. ” Brenda Leach Terry Alexander Betty Atwood Esther Bailey Carolyn Barnard Crystal Belcher Virgil Benge Billy Blankenship Ann Booth Aneita Boyle Robert Camenisch Catherine Candler Donald Coffman Donna Conder Phyllis Cooley Marion Cooper Chester Cornett Alice Crase Barbara Curlis Marcella Davis Debbie Demrow Christy Denny Robert Duff Phyllis Emerson Tim Estes Charles Fagan Helen Francis Martha Francis Judy Gilbert 10 Shannon Hatter Top Row Lloyd McGuffey Ivan Singleton Joseph Blair Tom Blankenship Mike Candler Bottom Row Dennis Martin David Faulkner Bruce Johnson Larry Lewis Phyllis Grimes Leila Hammons Janet Hatter Pat Hurt Bennie Jacobs David Johnson John Kolasa Onilee Lawless Brenda Leach Geraldine Leedy Margie Lewis Joe Means Nelson Moore Ann Keith Osborne Donald Padgett Scena Ann Petrey Darlene Phillips Debi Phillips Larry Phillips Dennis Rachford Steve Ralston Carolyn Rankin Berdine Reed Martha Roberts Paul Roberts Laura Roller Jesse Shelton Agnes Smith 11 TEACHER, TEACHER . . . WHERE’S THE TEACHER?!? It was the first day of school and as the bell beginning second period rang, eager trigonometry students ran into the room to begin their understanding of that diffi- cult math. However, as they sat ramrod straight with their books open ready to begin their work it was to their surprise that the teacher never showed up to class. They knew that their faithful leader was suppose to be Ms. Ann Booth, but where was she and why didn 7 she as least come by to meet her new class. The second period trigonometry class later found out that she had completely forgotten about them and she was actual- ly in the teacher’s lounge having a cup of coffee as she had been accustomed to doing the previous year. PATRIOTS MAKE PLAYOFFS IN 1987 The 1987 varsity football team completed its sea- son with an 8-3 record. The Pats finished as district runner-up and made the playoffs for the first time since 1982. Lincoln won its first game against Boyle Co., lost to Danville, then reeled off seven straight wins before losing its final two. There were many outstanding individual achieve- ments in 1987, but the two biggest were Michael Penman’s rushing for a school record 987yards and quarterback Jason Todd’s throwing for over 1,000 yards and 40-yard average as punter. His season was capped off by becoming only the second player in school history to be named 1st Team All-State by the Louisville Courier-Journal. With only nine graduating seniors, the outlook for 1988 is very bright indeed. If the team continues to work hard in the weightroom, next year’s team could be one of the best in school history. The 1987 football season was dedicated to Keith McEI- roy, who was fatally injured in a car accident on July 24. He was a hard worker and was dedicated to making himself a better player. Keith was an inspiration to us all and we miss him. Hester hauls in another one. Penman Gallops for six-points!! Offensive line at it’s best; Banks. Robbins. The Patriots competed with the state’s elite in the Panther Classic at Pleasure Ridge Park and the King of the Bluegrass at Fairdale. They also traveled to Northern Kentucky and played in the famous Classic. Some of the teams that were included on this rugged schedule were Clay Co., Pleasure Ridge Park, Fairdale, and Male. After the regular season had come to an end, the Patriots began exciting tournament play by winning the 45th District Championship. Coach Nelson Moore was extremely happy with victory and said that it was a nice reward for the seniors. The Patriots seven seniors included Jason Todd, George Miller, Gerald Miller, Jamie Henderson, Jon Moore, Doug Waldroup, and Jimmy Hill. When the season ended in the 12th Regional Tournament, the Patriots had compiled an 11-13 record, and were District Champions. Coach Moore was pleased with this year’s team and was proud of their efforts. He was also quick to add that one or two players would possibly receive a scholarship to college next year. They were District runner-ups to Boyle County. We played a lot of running basketball with pressing defense this year. This is an exciting type of basketball and pleases the fans. The Lady Pats started the same line up all year with the exception of injury play. This year’s starters were Dionne Givens, a senior guard, forward. She averaged about 12 pts. per game. Dionne was all area, all district and all region this year. She also went over the 1000 point mark to become the school’s 2nd all-time scorer. Jill Baird, a senior guard. Jill was the team’s leading scorer this year averaging 14+ points per game. She has scored 860 points in her career and ranks 3rd on the all-time scoring list. Jill also was all area, all district, and was injured in the regional tournament. Danetta Miller, senior center. Danetta averaged about 8 pts. per game and 6 rebounds, and was a big asset on the boards for the Lady Pats. The starting forwards were underclassmen. Junior Cassandra Alcorn started for her second year and averaged 12 pts. per game and was the team’s leading rebounder averaging 9. She was also all area, and all district. Sophomore Maggie Cox finished out the starting line up. Maggie also started last year. She averaged 6 points and 5 rebounds per game. Our other senior was 6th man Linda Rector. Linda played well and came in to give the Lady Pats a big boost in many other games. Other players who played and contributed a lot were Sophomore guard, Jackie Duff; Sophomore forward, Jeannie Martin; sophomore guard, Kristi Adams; and freshmen Missy Isaacs and Regina Brown. 25 26 Front Row: Back Row: Terry Doud Hector Gonzalez Wayne Terry Shane Crase Ray Terry Stacey Bailey Paul Lewis Philip Mink Tim Smith Coach Moore Stephanie Martin (absent) c R O S S C O u N T R Y F 1987-88 CHEERLEADERS o a r s ■ i Boys’ Varsity Girls’ Varsity LINCOLN COUNTY BOYS’ VARISTY CHEERLEADERS 1. Actu- ally, it should be the best year of a person's life when he or she is a senior, but it can also be a very scary situation to be in when you realize that you will soon be leaving friends whom you have known for twelve years. It is a time when you have to decide what you are going to be doing for the rest of your life. Most young people have already decided what they want to do when they graduate from high school, but many of them are still unsure of what they want out of life. That is a good question. No longer is man’s hero the bulky magnificent lord of all like Hulk Hogan or Mr. T. Today’s hero is not the strongest of the world like the old days. Today’s here is the thinking man’s man who outsmarts people instead of kills them. These heroes are mortal men like Pee-Wee Her- man, Ernst P. Whorrel and Da- vid Letterman. These mild man- nered swashbuckler’s of today are reflections of the youth’s spirits and desires. Hail Pee- Wee! Her husband, Tom Holland, was sixty-nine years old. As Mr. Holland was leaving the hospital from visiting his wife, the chief surgeon, Dr. Carson, started discussing Mrs. Holland’s situation with Mr. Holland. “She needs a heart transplant, ” said Dr. Carson. “A heart transplant?” asked Mr. Holland. “Yes, but we can’t find a heart right at the moment, but we are looking,” said Dr. Carson. “1 see! Is there anything I can do to help?” asked Mr. Holland. “No, the best thing you can do right now is go home, ” said Dr. Carson. Days passed and still no donor. Dr. Carson and the assistant surgeon Dr. Kelly were checking on Mrs. Holland. When they were through, they stepped outside of the room and started to talk. ” “If we don’t get a heart for the transplant within three days, Mrs. Holland is going to die, ” said Dr. Carson. “I know, ” said Dr. Kelly. “What are we going to do?” “There isn’t anything we can do but wait,” said Dr. Carson. Meanwhile John and Mary Holland were inside the room talking. “How are you feeling?” asked Mr. Holland. “As well as can be expected, ” said Mrs. Holland. “Is there anything I can get you?” asked Mr. Holland. “Yes, ” said Mrs. Holland. “What?” asked Mr. Holland. “Get me some dowers, ” said Mrs. Holland. “What kind of flowers would you like?” asked Mr. Holland. “Roses, ” said Mrs. Holland. “OK, I’ll go get you some roses, ” said Mr. Holland. The flower shop was only a few blocks away so Mr. Holland decided to walk. Mr. Holland walked into the flower shop and the lady at the checkout counter said, “What can 1 do for you?” “1 would like a bouquet of roses, ” said Mr. Holland. She laid the roses on the counter and said, “That will be ten dollars.” After that long walk, Mr. Holland wanted to go back to the hospital in a taxi. He paid the checkout lady and said, “Would you hold onto these flowers while 1 go get a taxi?” “Sure, ” said the lady. Mr. Holland walked out of the flower shop and into the street to get a taxi when all of a sudden, a speeding car came straight toward Mr. Holland and hit him; he was killed instantly. An hour later at the hospital, Dr. Kelly came running in Dr. Carson’s office, “We have a heart, ” said Dr. Kelly. “We have to begin surgery immediately,” said Dr. Carson. Mrs. Holland was in the operating room and the doctors were ready for surgery in no time. After surgery Mrs. Holland was stable and doing well. While she was recovering, the doctors were outside her room discussing her husband’s accident. “Should we tell her where the heart came from?” asked Dr. Kelly. “Of course, we should, ” said Dr. Carson. “Who is going to tell her?” asked Dr. Kelly. “We both will, but not right now, wait until she gets more stable, ” said Dr. Carson. “I am going to check on her, ” said Dr. Carson. Dr. Carson walked in her room and saw her with a bouquet of roses in her lap. “Your husband sent them, ” said Dr. Carson. “1 know,” said Mrs. Holland. “Let’s see what the card says,” said Mrs. Holland. She picked up the card and on the card read these words: “My heart beats for you, Love Tom. ” This story was written by a freshman, Jamie Witcher, (or an English I class assignment. 98 MEMBERS Stacy Lane — Rep. Seventeen members participated in Star Events, while chapter members are working on degrees as well as career opportunity projects. A local newspaper featured a full page article on FHA HERO activites during Vocational Education Week and the FHA HERO participated in Region 15 Fall and Spring Meeting, State Meeting, and National Meeting. With the cooperation of Sycamores of Danville, they sponsored a style show for spring and they sponsored a teenage Health Fair in cooperation with Fort Logan Hospital for FHA HERO Week. The club prepared a Nutrition Display on “Sugar in the Diet” for seven local elementary schools and the high school and they had an officer participate in the Kentucky Egg Council Cook-off at the Kentucky State Fair — she was first runner-up. In the Spring, they plan to sponsor a chapter recreational acitivity for members. He is our Guardian Angel and the Terminator rolled into one. His name is Gary Kidwell, but he is better known as Barney Fife or Swanny. Mr. Kidwell is a man with a mission. His job: to keep the halls clear of wandering organisms, called students. His boss is Mr. Portwood, but it is be- lieved that he has connections with the man upstairs because he is always at the right place at the wrong time. He takes much abuse from the stu- dents, but it never deters him. If you stop to think about it though, without Mr. Kid- well, it would be a zoo out there. Homecoming! The theme was “Great Moments in History, ” which encouraged those who worked on the floats to be very creative. The Homecoming festivities actually began the week before when the Homecoming Queen Candidates and Attendants were chosen by each of their classes. The festivities that took place the week of Homecoming started on Tuesday when the classes started working on floats. Students and advisors worked fervanently to get the floats done by 7:30 p.m. Thursday night — just in time for the pep rally. Homecoming week came to an end on Friday with the parade at 4:30 p.m. that afternoon and then that night with the football game against Estill County. At half-time of the game Sherri Marcum was named Homecoming Queen with Dawn Hayes the first runner-up. The Patriots won the football game 35-7. After the game there was a Homecoming Dance for 10 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria. Homecoming 1987 will probably hold fond memories for many students at LCHS for years to come. But the first day of school is always fun. Seeing your old friends, seeing how much everyone has changed over the summer. Getting your schedule for the school year and seeing what teachers you have. Everyone is talking about what they did during the summer, where they went for vacation, and the people they met. The first day of school is exciting. It’s funny watching the “freshmen” looking up at the room numbers, wondering where they ’re supposed to be. You have to go back to eating the lunchroom food or eating “junk”. No more sitting and watching your favorite soaps while you eat. Youjl be sitting in class. Everyone enjoys the first few weeks of school. But after that, you're always ready for Christ ms break! I wish you nights filled with stars and plenty of dreams, days filled with laughter and dancing sunbeams. I wish you a barefoot run in the grass, and friendly smiles from people you pass. I wish you a winter world of white, warm gingerbread and a snowball fight, food when you’re hungry, rest when you’re tired; someone to hold in front of a fire. A talk with a friend, the touch of a hand, a tender kiss or walk in the sand, a robin’s sweet song, blue skies up above; a year and a life of peace and love. MORE THAN JUST A CLASS This year on the yearbook staff has been an exciting time for the entire staff. Each member has learned so much and we all have become such close friends. A lot of people think that the yearbook class is easy and you don't have to do anything but take a lot of pictures and stick them on a page. But this isn’t the case at all; in order to be on the yearbook staff you 've got to be willing to work really hard, have patience, and be willing to sacrifice your time to get the job done. There are times during the year when we get mad at each other, we argue, we laugh, and in the end we all come together as a group, and this is what this class is about. 187 JCSTENS
