The team got off to a fast 6-0 start and had the number one ranked defense in the state after six games. The team showed a lot of character and heart this season and had the most successful team in recent years. The outlook for Coach Phillips' football team next year is very optimistic, as only 13 seniors are graduating and the team will return several players at key positions next year. If the team continues to work hard in the off-season, this upcoming year, Lincoln County will have one of the top football teams in the area. Tim Whitis (not pictured) Coach Nelson Moore Asst Bill Tharp The varsity Patriots finished the 1986-87 season with an 8-16 record. Although the Patriots did not play up to their potential at times, the record was a good one considering the team lost the two leading scorers and two key reserves off last year's 12th Region runner-up team. This was a young Patriot squad that started only two seniors and three of the first four players that saw action off the bench were juniors. Two sophomores and one freshman also saw varsity action this year. It will be an experienced and promising club that takes the court next year. The Patriots advanced to the 12th Region Tournament by downing KSD by a count of 60-51. Then the varsity nearly repeated last year's 45th District championship but fell in the closing seconds to rival Danville, finishing as runner-up. The Pats were eliminated by the evenual cham- pion, Monticello, in the first round of the region by a score of 68-65. This was a rebuilding year considering we lost four good players off last year's team and we played a lot of younger players, commented Coach Nelson Moore. We're hoping to build a tradition here and the future looks good for next year. The varsity was well represented on the various all-tournament and all-area teams. Greg Alcorn and Neal Johnson made the 45th District All-Tourney team and Neal was also a member of the 12th Region All-Tournament. This was a very respectable record considering the difficulty of their schedule and the fact that they were basically a young team, starting five underclassmen most of the year. The team was led in scoring by junior forward Dionne Givens with a 12.9 average. She also led the team in field goal percentage and free throw percentage with 55.5% and 43.2% respectively. She was named to the all- District and all area teams and voted this year Most Valuable Player by her teammates. Jill Baird, a junior guard, averaged 10 points per game and was second in scoring. She also was second in field goal percentage with 42% and in assists with 59. She was named to the all-District team and received the Effort and Defensive awards this year. Junior center, Danetta Miller averaged 5.4 points per game and 5.9 rebounds and blocked many shots. The team's only senior and captain Paula Rice averaged 5.5 points per game and was third on the team in assists with 50. She also contributed leadership to the younger players and was a partime starter. Cassandra Alcorn started this year for her first time and led the team in rebounding with 231, an average of 8.9. She also averaged 7.6 points and won the trophy for being the Most Improved Player. Maggie Cox started the final half of the season as a freshman and averaged 6 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. Stacy Bailey, a sophomore guard and partime starter led the team in assists with 65 and averaged 4.8 points per game. Also lettering for the Lady Patriots this year were juniors, Margaret Gander and Linda Rector. They also contributed in a good team effort. This team played well as a team and worked as a unit, although they had a lot of early distraction and things beyond their control, they improved greatly. 1 was very proud of their efforts and the way they worked in practice and on the floor in games. It was a very fun year. 1 enjoyed it and believe most of the players did also. The team will miss our Seniors Paula Rice (player) and Barbara Jacobs and Merry Cooper (stats). Running off the field after three! 22 GOLF 1987 Seniors Todd Douglas Todd Faulkner Chris Caldwell This years team had a very successful year and fell only 10 shots short of a berth in the State Tournament in Elizabethtown, Ky. The team, which is comprised of seven players, set several records this year including the all-time low total of any former Lincoln County team. The top 4 players had a combined total of 152 which helped the Patri- ots complete an outstanding record of 18-2. This is the best win-loss record of any sport in the school's history. The team will loose three seniors: Todd Douglas, Todd Faulkner, and Chris Caldwell. The colors were silver and pink. The theme was Stand By Me, and the band was Added Risk. The junior class chose Charley Brown as prom queen and Neal Johnson as Prom king. 73 75 ACADEMIC TEAM The Lincoln County High School academic team defeated Warren Central and East Hardin to capture the finals of “KET Scholastic Challenge May 3. As the winning team from an original field of 117 high schools, Lincoln County will receive $500, and the two runner-up teams will each receive $250. The money is donated by the Friends of KET and goes to the libraries of the winning schools. The Lincoln County team includes (left to right) Keith Durham, (captain), son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Durham, Waynesburg; Jon Cooley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cooley, Hustonville; and John Miracle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Miracle, Stanford. At the Hart Co. Invitational Lincoln Co. placed 1st out of 16 Lincoln defeated Warren Central and East Hardin in the finals top rated academic teams around the state. to finish 1st out of 117 schools. 76 Sweet 16 Math Champions; Keith Durham, Jon Cooley, Leann Toombs, Kevin Bandura, and Lexington Mayor-Scotty Baesler. Each member of the math team was awarded a $1,300 scholarship to any Ky. college.
