AND FRESHMEN ACTION 77 Coach Steve Sullivan Coaches: Don Wooldridge, Dennis Bellinger, Willie Hoskins The Lincoln County High football team surprised many this year by posting an impressive 9-2 record. Our only losses came to Boyle County and one to Cawood for the District II AAA ti- tle. The Patriots were the champions of the Sub-district achieving this by defeating Mercer County, 27-8; Jessamine County, 54-19; and Estill County, 21-19. The Pats fought hard for this win by coming back from a 19-0 half-time defeat. Also, during the season, Coach Don Wooldridge amassed a 2 1 game regular season winning streak, which came to an end after a hard fought game against Boyle County. We, the members of the Patriots Yearbook Staff, would like to congratulate and thank the entire team, coaches, and staff for making this year a great season for everyone in the county and wish them luck for a successful season next year. 78 79 BOY’S VARSITY BASKETBALL Lee Sparkman—Manager; Kenny Phoenix, Gary Wilkinson, Mike Candler, Greg Snow, Sidney Alcorn, Kelvin Alcorn, Coach Jim Baird, Steve Ralston, Brian Walls, Stuart Atwood, Scott Montgomery, Mark Quinton, Larry Dunn, Jimmy Padgett, and Coach Johnny Wilder. They finished with a 15-12 record. They were runners-up in the 45th District tournament and lost in the 12th Regional semi-finals to the eventual champions, McCreary Central. This group of young men was extremely easy to work with. They played very good team ball and were very unselfish. They played hard at all times and never gave up, even when they were down several points toward the end of the game. A coach or a fan could not ask more from a team than that. Lack of experience hurt the Patriots in the early going, but they improved as the season progressed. They seemed to play their best ball against good teams and important games. The Patriots played Henry Clay, the eventual state champions, on even terms for the first half then fell behind and came back on them toward the end of the game. In the Regional semi-finals, they took McCreary Central to over-time before losing by four points—the same team that had beaten Lincoln County by 28 points earlier in the season. The Varsity team was made up of seven seniors and five juniors. These seniors will really be missed, not just because they are good athletes, but they are also hard working and a joy to coach. The juniors, along with a good group of sophomores and freshmen, should provide us with another good team next year. 82 83 TRYING TO CATCH SOMETHING!!! GIRLS VARSITY Senior Member Cindy Carrier 84 The Lady Pats had a successful year. They finished up the year with a 14-13 record in a very tough schedule, playing 10 games teams rated in the top 15 in the state, in- cluding some in the top 5. This year they won their district for the second consecutive year, and lost in the Regional to the Region- al winner by two points in an overtime. We will lose one senior this year in Cindy Carrier, and her strong play will be missed. We are looking forward to a fine year next year with most of our players getting a lot of experience this year. Hitting was our main problem, while some inexperienced pitchers also created some difficulty. After a time the team started hitting and won some games. If the team as a whole had hit the ball all year as we did the last seven games, we would have had a better year. 88 89 BASEBALL ACTION!!
