Where yesterday a cedar stood, Now stands a ghost of white. A drab, grey world has changed itself To one all gay and bright. Mala Holt I entered a small green forest One warm and summery day Where I found such untold beauty That soon I wanted to stay. I saw wild flowers by the dozens As I glanced upon the ground. Then I heard the sweetest music. The birds had made that sound. Now when I am sad or lonesome And haven't anywhere to go, I'II take a walk inside the forest For the peace that I would know. These poems, written in Miss McCown's Class, were winners in The National High School Poetry Contest and were published in The National High School Poetry Anthology: Young America Sings.
