Located first on "Rocky Knob," it was moved to the "Dick White College" build- ing on West College Street in 1914 and back to "Rocky Knob" in 1920. Increased enrollment made a new building necessary, and the one pictured here was completed in time for Commencement 1930, at a cost of S125,000. For twenty-three yeors this building, with several addi- tions, served as the Central High School of Lincoln Coun- ty, but ......... Due to the highly inflamm- able material of which the building was constructed, the fire spread at a terrific rate. The firemen arrived too late to save any part of the main building, and on the morning of-May 8, graduation clay, this scene of desolation was all that re- mained-smoking ruins with wreckers bringing down the once proud columns. However, the spirit of Cen- tral High manifested itself in a faith and determination to carry on. Graduation exercises were held in Robert E. Lee Audi- torium, with the speaker, the Rev. Walter Courtenay, call- ing the class of '53 "the hot- test class in the history of Central High". The BRIDGE of '53 was the only remaining record of the enrollment for the year, and from it new records were be- gun. H Another year was success- fully completed. Where yesterday a cedar stood, Now stands a ghost of white. A drab, grey world has changed itself To one all gay and bright. Mala Holt I entered a small green forest One warm and summery day Where I found such untold beauty That soon I wanted to stay. I saw wild flowers by the dozens As I glanced upon the ground. Then I heard the sweetest music. The birds had made that sound. Now when I am sad or lonesome And haven't anywhere to go, I'II take a walk inside the forest For the peace that I would know. These poems, written in Miss McCown's Class, were winners in The National High School Poetry Contest and were published in The National High School Poetry Anthology: Young America Sings. l 0PlI0 URES 1551 JANE MITCHELL ......,.............
